kitten fever is worse than baby fever because a kitten is way easier to obtain than a baby so it's more dangerous
I don’t think people truly understand the scope of the damage Sony is about to do to physical media. They literally invented the compact disc. They are the reason why Blu-ray as a format won the HD wars over HD-DVD. They have gargantuan influence over manufacturing disc-based media. If Sony as a company stops making physical media for their next gen gaming consoles, this is going to affect movies and music as well. If you buy CDs, DVDs, or Blu-rays, those are next on the chopping block.
People have been thoroughly convenience-pilled for at least the last 15-20 years and streaming services have effectively killed physical media already. The problem isn't just Sony, the problem is capitalism in general and what it does to our behaviors. I'd love to bash on Sony, but we're really the ones to blame. Streaming services have killed the media sharing community, which was flourishing before streaming services came along. But we bit the bullet and subscribed to Netflix, Prime, Spotify and Apple Music and whatever else without a second thought, and now it's almost unimaginable to unsubscribe from these services and lose our massive libraries of music, movies, and TV.
We can only blame ourselves and capitalist propaganda for why we have lost our freedom to own physical media. Sony is only interested in money like every other corpo greed machine and it just makes sense when almost no one is buying.
How many of us own a DVD player? A disc drive? A Blu-ray player even? How many have a Hi-Fi system with CD player?
I collect old media and I find that only collectors seem to have an interest in these relics. I go to friends' houses only to see they have a SmartTV and a Bluetooth speaker to play media off of.
The best way to combat this is to cancel all your subscriptions and educate your friends on the issue, and they might cancel theirs as well. Fuck the rent based economy. Stop supporting it.
But the loss of physical media is nothing new. Capitalism just moved away from it and the people didn't seem bothered enough by that.
You’re not wrong. I’ve been pretty consistent with SOME of my games, buying physical books and Playstation/Switch games whenever there was a physical option. But my CD binder got lost years ago, and I haven’t been as diligent about buying physical movies and music the last few years.
I think those who want a physical media presence in their home need to take stock of what they already own, decide whether they want to lean full tilt into having an actual media library or just keep a curated collection of their favorite pieces.
I canceled all streaming services a few years ago. I have a sizable collection of vinyl but I hardly ever listen to them anymore and tend to sail the high seas for most of my music anyway. I’ll be selling those off to make space for more books, games, and movies.
I don’t think it needs to be an all-or-nothing thing. Take stock of what you have, make a list of things you’d like to have, and if you spot a rare find at a yard sale you didn’t know you wanted, snatch it up before some scummy reseller does.
We are entering an age of needing to be more intentional about the things that matter to us. I fear people are going to lean heavily into FOMO culture and think they need to panic buy everything, but that’s just going to raise prices across the board and leave folks with stuff they may not actually want or appreciate.
Also never underestimate the power of lending, sharing, and/or recreating your own media. Burning CDs and DVDs is still a thing, and some retro games have little to no DRM protection (*cough* Sega Dreamcast *cough*). Make of that what you will.
I agree with you. One thing about collecting physical media is dealing with disc-rot and tape disintegration, so I'm currently digitizing as much as I can and finding digital replacements. I keep most everything digital on a disc drive and am happy to share with friends through an encrypted data transfer link. I have a movie buff friend that collects movies digitally. I mostly collect games, music, and some old TV that is literally not streaming anywhere. It's good to share and there are some good work arounds for most copyright protected forms of media.
I do try my best to make it a point to buy albums of artists that I consider to be ethical and worth supporting (mostly underground music) and I think we could all benefit from getting in the habit of paying the artist tax every now and again.
It doesn't have to be all or nothing, but personally, I think making it my life's duty to consume ethically and bypassing these corporate outlets is a MUST for my morals, but I don't expect everyone to follow suit, though that certainly would stifle the bourgeois media giants on a large scale and I am known to dream.
Keep sharing. Media for all!
Nah, I agree. Physical won’t last forever. Physical media at this stage is more about preserving stuff so it can be digitized and shared with future generations. I am re-evaluating the stuff I actually want on my shelves. Discs will last longer than tape, but I don’t actively sit down and engage with music like I do with books. And vinyl is just too expensive and takes up so much space that it’s not fun anymore. I already have gigabytes upon gigabytes of music; everything that’s on my shelf is also on hard drives, so what’s the point?
Ethical consumption is going to be key to preserving media so it can be enjoyed 20+ years from now. Buy the FLAC files directly from the artist. Get physical books from local shops. Emulate everything else.
But definitely DON’T go to this Reddit link. Why on Earth would you do that?
Look. Look I’m not reading as much fanfic as I used to.
But in case any young people out there need to hear this- it is very normal for gay people to just. take turns. For a lot of the stuff. That some of you. Seem to think are static, binariatic, opposing personality traits.
ngl some of yall treat “top” and “bottom” like they’re god given roles or immutable personality traits and not just like. where their body happens to be in relation to someone else’s rn
Being real for a second, some people use “top” and “bottom” the same way others would use “man” and “woman” and it SHOWS

RED DEAD REDEMPTION II ᨖ
@vivziepop Your artists and contributors are the backbone of this community and now you’re telling them they can’t earn an income off the art that got most of them hired in the first place?
Your artists need to eat! They need to be able to feed themselves! You recruited them for their talent and I know you’re not paying them enough for Hazbin and Helluva to be their only source of income!
What the actual heck is going on with companies right now? Absolute corporate greed and giving the finger to the people who made you successful is permeating every GD industry. I cannot take this anymore.
