when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method

29 BILLION?!?!
The IRS has collected more than $500 million in back taxes from delinquent millionaires (MarketWatch)

Everyone else talked about outdoor cats, it's time for me to talk about offleash dogs
Reasons not to have your dog offleash at a public park:
1) roads (this one is self-explanatory)
2) it makes the park inaccessible to like, entire swathes of the population. If you have experience with police dogs or guard dogs in your neighborhood, or you're a new immigrant from somewhere with a large population of feral dogs, it sucks ass going to the park and having someone's massive lab bound up to you!
3) If, for example, you are in a protected wetland area plastered with friendly signs asking you to please leash your dog to avoid causing an ecological impact, having your dog offleash might cause an ecological impact! "Oh no, my dog is well-behaved, they would never bother the wildlife" wrong! your dog is in the pond trying to eat the endangered Blandings' turtles!
4) Non-zero chance of a jokerified park guide (me) just clipping your dog to a leash and stealing them
5) Other people with dogs! It sucks total ass having to constantly watch whether your totally uncontrolled ~furbaby~ is about to Start Shit with my properly leashed pet. It sucks even more ass when they do, which seems to happen about 25% of the time frankly!
6) People with Allergies trying to share a public space and do not want your "friendly" dog getting near them because they do not want to spend the night in hospital thanks!
7) People with mobility aids who don't want your dog messing with them. Your dog is jumping up on my scooter, I am worried for my scooter. I am worried that I am going to run over your dog if I don't have stopping distances correct! Your dog has never seen a mobility scooter and is freaking out.
Please. Just leash your fucking dogs, or take them to an actual dog park not a public path.
8) other dogs! My dog has been attacked by off leash dogs like. At least four times. Cannot get babygirl to take walks anymore at all. It’s so sad.

the vertlartnic doing better reporting on covid than major new organizations
aaron bushnell knew exactly what he was doing. he states his intentions with total lucidity and sense of purpose. he knows what he's about to do is extreme--he says so. he speaks calmly, but he's clearly terrified. he takes a deep breath after pouring the accelerant over himself. he has to psyche himself up to light the flame. he struggles with the lighter. he says "free palestine" normally once before he starts to scream it. even through his agony he manages to say it one last time before he stops being able to speak at all. this is a man with total conviction. he wanted to help people, in any way possible. this action was a moral one, and any news outlet painting this as simply a mental health issue is a disservice to his memory. he knew what he was doing when he burned himself in uniform. he knew that there was a chance that sacrificing his own life could go on to save many others. this was the ultimate act of selflessness, and it should be treated as such. may he rest in peace.

Abbott Elementary (2021-present) Career Day (Part 2) (S03E02)
i need yall to understand that people back in the day didn't bathe infrequently because of moral reasons or because they were afraid of washing or were too stupid to realize they were dirty and smelly. people bathed infrequently because up until very recently, in most parts of the world gathering enough clean water to fully submerge yourself in ranged from "Very difficult" to "extremely expensive" to "literally impossible"
and despite this, people in all time periods were aware when they weren't clean and were as sensitive to smells as we are now. there is a reason why much of the medical beliefs before germ theory revolved around bad smells getting people sick. people didn't like to smell bad and they knew when they did. they also didn't like to be dirty and, yes, washed themselves without the use of massive amounts of water
like the time period I'm personally most familiar with the daily habits of is Tudor England, right? people washed themselves daily without bathing daily. people made efforts not to smell bad and if they didn't, they would be scorned or avoided. but the actual most affective way people stayed clean then, was by simple changing their undergarments often. And by often, I mean multiple times a day if you could afford it. big giant elaborate outfits couldn't be cleaned effectively, but undergarments could and were cleaned often, and when these practices were tested by people in modern times using the materials they would have had then, they were found to be pretty effective at maintaining hygiene
this isn't important and is a dumb thing to get mad about but like? it bothers me. people hundreds and even thousands of years ago weren't idiots because they didn't have luxury of knowledge and resources we have and they largely had the same basic desires that we have now, it was just harder for them but they still found fucking ways, ok?

My mother grew up within biking distance of Bill Watterson in Ohio and would like everyone to know:
“Snow Goons” like this are very real
If anything, Mr. Watterson has toned down the scale and horror of some them.
