Callout post just for me on this beautiful monday morning
Anybody else got that Evergiven sized writers block
âWhereâs the next chapter?!â Well buddy youâre never gonna guess
Whatâs the comic sans trick?
It doesn't fix everything but I have used it for essays at minimum since I discovered this, and it really does help.
Just, uh, remember to change it back to something appropriate before you submit your essay to your favorite professor...
Comic sans is a font designed specifically to help dyslexics. It's one of the few dyslexic friendly fonts that come standard with your computer. Verdana is another. Mayhap now you simply find it easier on the eyes to process?
My friend sent me this no context
I want what they have

what people think is hard about writing: describing the joy, love, beauty, grief, loss and hope that form the richness of human experience
what is actually hard about writing: describing basic actions such as turning, leaning over, reclining, gesturing, saying something in a quiet voice, breathing, getting up from chairs, and walking across rooms
Iâll spill out a brilliant, wrenching portrayal of a characterâs struggle with grief over a loss and his complex regrets and guilt and then a page later Iâll have to write that a character whoâs lying prone raises his head and shoulders up to look at something without fully getting up and Iâll get so angry I want to strangle an eagle with my bare hands
this spoke to me
ocs are great you just make up a guy and do whatever you want with them and it's free and nobody can stop you
your ocs listen to you?
making up a guy and doing whatever you want is very fun but stories do not listen to their writers and i have the au lore rambles from this morning to prove it
What does "dead dove don't eat" mean? I'd Google it but I'm afraid of getting graphic images of deceased birds in the results.
Itâs a meme from an old episode of Arrested Development. Youâve seen it here on tumblr, but not always with the original context.Â
The character sees a paper bag in the fridge labelled âDead Dove Do Not Eat.â He takes the bag out of the fridge, opens it up, makes a disgusted face, and then the famous âI donât know what I expected.â
There really was a dead dove in the bag.
When you see a fic tagged with âdead dove do not eatâ it basically means, âthis fic is clearly labelled (tagged) indicating content that some people will not want to read. If you read it anyway, itâs your own fault. I warned you.â
It can also be interpreted as âSee those tags and warnings? Iâm not joking around. Pay attention to them.â
The way I understand it then, itâs basically just a more amusing way of saying âdonât like donât readâ?
I would say itâs best understood as an intensifier to Donât Like Donât Read.
Just for example, say a series has some implied cannibalism in it.Â
A given fic for this series might tag with âcannibalism warningâ just because itâs in the canon and the fic acknowledges or discusses it. Some people might be okay with discussing it in the abstract, even if they donât want to see it represented explicitly. Others might be uncomfortable with just the concept, and the author might add âdonât like donât readâ to remind those people that they may not want to engage with the fic at all.
But if you see both âcannibalismâ and âdead dove do not eatâ the author is telling you that in the course of this fic, a character is going to straight up chow down on some dead bodies, onscreen.
To refine on that âintensifierâ concept slightly, I interpret âdead dove: do not eatâ as an intensity modifier. The presence of a tag itself doesnât necessarily tell me exactly how that content is going to be handled (which is not to say itâs not useful, just that itâs incomplete information). âDead dove: do not eatâ suggests to me that itâs going to on the darker, more serious end of the spectrum, and I shouldnât read it if Iâm not prepared for what may be a psychologically intense or harrowing treatment of the tagged material.
You know what! This conversation has gotten me thinking about the concept of âintensity modifiersâ all this morning, and I think itâs actually a fascinating subject we should talk more about!
Because I started off by thinking âDDDNE serves as an indication of subject intensity, which is an important purpose and itâs a shame that we donât have other things like thatâ but then I realized, we do! Theyâre just slightly less formalized than other kinds of tagging systems modern fandom tends to work with.
Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of intensity scales in common use in modern fandom.
The first is the violence/sex intensity scale, which tends overall to be conflated with or used as a shorthand for the intensity/maturity rating of the fic itself. And people have talked in detail about the difference between an M and an E rating, in terms of how explicitly the sex act or violence act is described.Â
But sex and violence are not the only topics that warrant an intensity scale. There are plenty of topics that people (myself included) are okay with when talking about in an abstract or general way, but if the narrative starts to dig down into the real nitty gritty of the topic I might only want to read it if Iâm in the right headspace, or not at all.Â
And though there isnât an official G to E scale, fandom has implicitly recognized this need and filled it with canonical tags â such as Implied/Referenced X, Canon-Typical X, or Dead Dove Do Not Eat.Â
1. Implied/Referenced X tells the reader that topic X is going to be discussed, but not shown explicitly on-screen. Unless the whole broad topic is a trigger for a reader, itâs probably okay for them to read.
2. Next step up from that is Canon-Typical X, which can generally be understood as the base or standard level of intensity for topic X in fandom Y. Exactly what level of intensity that is varies from fandom to fandom â âcanon-typical violenceâ for The Avengers is probably going to be a different level of intensity than âcanon-typical violenceâ for The Witcher, just to name two offhand. But it is generally understood that if youâre reading fic for fandom Y in the first place, the level of X present in the work is probably not going to be too much for you.
3. And then at the far end of the intensity modifier scale is Dead Dove Do Not Eat, where a topic is explored in such detail and intensity that even fans of Fandom Y will have to decide whether theyâre okay to read this today, or maybe at all.
see this is the kind of quality content that keeps me coming around here on tumbler dot com.
Iâm really glad this post hit my feed because I saw a story tagged that and couldnât remember what it meant the other day and because the Adderall had worn off I forgot to look it up.
I remember when I first started posting fanfic to FFN in 1999, it drove me bananas that âangstâ was considered a category. I used to label everything âdramaâ almost as a reaction to the edgelord bullshit you would see in stories that were posted under the âangstâ label.
but over the years I have tried to get much better about responsible tagging because I have triggers, I have friends who get triggered by things, and I donât want to hurt my friends, so why would I want to hurt strangers? but dead dove do not eat always confuse the hell out of me because I couldnât tell what it said about the story.
the hardest part is keeping up with the jargon that comes in from different groups of people. or seeing the specific language evolve.
For example, I was in an anime club in 1991 my second year at university, and that was how I found out about Cream Lemon. Later when kids started labelling their explicit fanfic âlemonsâ, I understood the reference. But then people created, like, a whole fruit scale based on softcore hentai anime that was tape traded in some cases decades before they were born. itâs now so far removed from the source as to come all the way back around to being completely opaque unless youâre in the know.
itâs not even a pop culture zeitgeist knowledge thing itâs more cross-pollinatisation from different types of fandoms (media fandom, anime fans, comic book fans, gamers, bandom, RPF, etc.) who engage in the same behaviours but develop their own vocabulary in parallel evolution.
people I still want to stab over a decade later:
Creative Writing Professor at a former college: Welcome to creative writing! By the way, you will not write fantasy, ghost stories, pranormal, or science fiction in this class, as this is a creative writing course.â
What the ever loving fuck is with âcreativeâ writing professors who think that speculative fiction of any stripe ISNâT CREATIVE?
I still remember my own creative writing teacher telling me this because he saw the Terry Pratchett book on my desk and got this smug smirk on his face like âaha, gotchaâ. He had the nerve to pick it up and call it âpopularist fictionâ, like somehow being popular and easily accessible made it less inherent in intellectual value.
I had it in my back pack because I did my final thesis on the evolution of mythology and folk tails into fantasy and sci-fi and the societal importance of telling stories (before anyone asks, no I donât have it, I lost it when I moved continents), and I used Terry Pratchett because there wasnât a single humanitarian issue the man did not touch on.
Which I told him. And then he kind of floundered and went âah, well but, itâsâŚwell I mean itâs not exactly high browâ, like neither the fuck was Shakespeare or Dickens you self-important turnip. Dickens was literally selling his stories by the chapter. He was the popular author of his time. Shakespeare was too, he fucking made up words and phrases all the time because the language he needed to express himself didnât exist in the way he needed it too.
Intellectual elitism is nothing more than a hold over from class warfare and the belief that only certain people should get to be truly educated. And it needs to be smashed.
And God knows Shakespeare loved dick jokes more than he probably loved breathing.

Sleepy babies! (Croki gets a drinking straw too)
thereâs nothing purer or better than how much kids enjoy being picked up and then hurled at soft surfaces
anyone whoâs ever been around kids for ay meaningful amount of time should know exactly how much kids long to be hefted up and then just fuckin tossed! itâs so good! theyâre so excited to get fucking tossed around like a sack of potatoes itâs so pure
Why do kids love it so much? Like I remember when I was a kid at diving practice during the summer, the best part was when one if the coaches would toss you into the deep end. And in gymnastics coaches would toss us into the foam pit. Do kids just have a evolutionary urge to die?

âVestibular sense provides information about where the body is in relation to its surroundings. This is the sense that helps you understand balance, and it connects with all the other senses.
When the vestibular system does not develop properly all other senses will struggle to function properly. Without a strong vestibular sense, kids will have no choice but to fidget, get frustrated, experience more falls and aggression, get too close to people when talking, and struggle with focusing and listening. Because they literally cannot help it.â
âHere are a few ways to support your childâs vestibular sense:
Spinning in circles.
Using a Merry-Go-Round.
Rolling down a hill.
Spinning on a swing.
Going upside down.
Climbing trees.
Rocking.
Jumping rope.
Summersaults or cartwheels.
Using monkey bars.
Skating.
Going backwards.
Swimming.
Dancing.
Wheel-barrel walks.â
Yeeting kids, spinning them, flipping them upside down, tossing them in the air, and otherwise disrupting their balance temporarily, is Important For Their Development, specifically for their vestibular sense.
Kids love this because they NEED it.
In other words: Donât forget to calibrate your childâs GPS!
YEET THE CHILD FOR THEIR HEALTH
Hi! Paediatric Occupational Therapist here who yeets children into pillows for a living. Itâs actually more than the vestibular system! Itâs also giving them proprioception, which is the feeling of your joints and muscles / where your body is in space!Â
We all seek proprioceptive input, leaning against walls, pushing against the steering wheel when driving, giving your body a squeeze to wake yourself up, the list goes on! When we âcrashâ kids into soft things like pillows or beds, weâre waking their bodies up AND calming their bodies down! In other words, getting them into this super nice zone of âjust rightâ regulation.Â
When I see a child who is bouncing off the walls and canât seem to stand still for more than a few seconds? I start wrestling with them, crashing them into pillows, giving their body the right amount of input they need to feel good and organised. And suddenly, this kid is able to sit and play attentively or do their handwriting practice. Itâs amazing! If you want to know more about why the vestibular and proprioceptive systems are awesome at making your body feel good, google those two words (and sensory processing) and read through some occupational therapy websites!Â
Side note: As adults, does your body ever feel jittering/jiggly/wiggly/like it needs to move or calm down but you just canât figure out why? Thatâs your sensory system saying Hey! I need to feel differently in order to function better! Hereâs what you can do:
Jump up and down (vestibular and proprioception)
Give yourself big squeezes (proprioception)
Place your hands on a wall and do push ups (proprioception)
Do cartwheels (vestibular and proprioception)
Get someone to give you the biggest bear hug for at least 10 seconds (proprioception and social connection, also proven to help regulate your sensory system into just right zone!)
Get a drink of water and drink it through a straw OR blow bubbles into the water (way more fun!) (oral motor input and respiration)
Have a shower or a bath (tactile)
Stretch and do exercise (vestibular and proprioception)
Eat something crunchy or chewy (like chips or gum) (oral motor input)
Listen to some music that suits your mood (auditory)
etc etc etc! Iâm sure you already have a strategy that your body has figured out works for you. I personally like to chew gum when I feel like i need to eat something but Iâm not actually hungry and just need that chewing sensation in my jaw.Â
Long story short, everyone has a sensory system and we all use regulation strategies like the ones listed above to help make our body feel better. So if you ever see someone (especially kids!) fidgeting and having a hard time focusing, maybe suggest something from the list above!
So this is why the kids I teach gymnastics love it so much when I yeet them onto the soft crash mat! It makes them? So happy? Itâs adorable
HEâS GONNA MELT LIKE A POPSICLE
When will creators of famous and beloved franchises realise that no fan in the history of fandoms has wanted the sequel with the new generation to have higher stakes and more angsty drama than the original.
A Fan: Wow, canât wait to see the heroesâ children living in a world that has been made better by the original heroes, having a loving and respectful relationship with the hero I loved and respected as a child, and dealing with their own adventure that might not be as high stake as saving the world, but is important for their own personal journey.Â
A creator: How about the world is ending again, the new generation hates the heroes, who have become major assholes for no reason, and everything is bigger and goes more boom. Â
Hobbit/Lord of the Rings is the SINGLE exception to higher stakes sequel
and you know why? itâs bc nothing in lotr undid what happened in the hobbit
the hobbit was a lower-stakes story about bilbo helping some dwarves reclaim their ancestral home, and in lotr (the book at least) tolkien goes out of his way to talk about how bilbo lived for a long time rich and famous and happy, and that erebor and dale are prosperous and successful. the threat is something that bilbo brought home with him, but if bilbo hadnât found it, it would have fallen into worse hands.Â
the reason why higher-stakes sequels are so often disappointing is bc itâs a betrayal of the original work, and undoes its premise and its victory. in the hobbit, they were never setting out to save the whole of middle earth, so the fact that the whole of middle earth ends up in peril during lotr doesnât feel like a betrayal. terrible things happen in lotr, but they are better than they would have been in the hobbit hadnât happened, and thatâs why it works
Also, SPECIFICALLY with âThe sequel follows the children of the original heroesâ, I want the heroes to be good parents!!
No one HAS EVER written or read Kidfic to see their favorite characters turn into shitty parents!! Or to see them deprived of getting to raise their children.Â
Shitty parents are backstory, NOT SEQUELS.

Pro tip from a college student and a biochem major: if you're drinking alcohol and you feel like you need to throw up, just throw up. Your body's natural response to too much alcohol is emesis, aka vomiting. If you wanna vomit it's because your body has had too much. Just throw up. You will feel SO much better both directly afterwards and the following morning.
I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: this is why you shouldn't mix alcohol and weed. Your body's natural response to too much alcohol is emesis (vomiting). Weed is an anti emetic. This means that if you have too much alcohol, the weed will make it very fucking hard for you to throw it back up.
It also means that you won't feel how much you're drinking because usually, you gauge when to stop when you feel like throwing up. But weed takes away that nausea sensation. So you're also a lot more likely to drink in excess and your body won't be able to get rid of it.
Another important drug fact since pharma is my main study focus: if you do drugs, particularly hard drugs, TELL YOUR DOCTORS. Especially if you're going in for surgery. If you do hard drugs, especially if one of those drugs is cocaine, some anaesthetics can literally fry your heart and kill you. Your doctors and surgeons won't rat you out, they just don't want to accidentally kill you out of ignorance.
There's a thing in pharmacology called drug interactions. Basically, drugs don't always act independently from one another. They have chemical interactions between themselves and sometimes they're useful, but sometimes they're lethal.
Other drugs besides cocaine that interact dangerously with common anaesthetics are heroin, LSD, and ecstasy (MDMA). You should mention any drug you're taking, though, because even some birth control pills can interact with anaesthetics. You never know and it's better to be safe than to suddenly have a heart attack mid surgery without your doctors knowing why.
Trust me, doctors do not care. They donât care at all. They just need to know so they donât accidentally kill you.
Shit, if you are an alcoholic and youâre in the hospital, LET THEM KNOW. Nothing is worse than having someone cold turkey detox while recovering from surgery. That can kill you. The hospital keeps liquor on hand to avoid a patient having a heart attack from alcohol detox.
Dreary as it is, this is why at virtually every doctorâs appointment they will ask what drugs/medications youâre taking. If youâre taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, itâs not a bad idea to mention them either, since they can also interact and affect whatever the doctor may want to do or prescribe.
Write them down somewhere in your phone if you canât remember. Honestly showing them a list is quicker than reciting them every time. (Obviously donât do this with the illegal drugs.)
super true and very important - doctors do not care about any part of you doing drugs except for the part where they might accidentally kill you, and they really really donât want to do that.
Addendum from the front line:
We DO NOT judge people for trying to cope with a stressful world. Your pharmaceutical misadventures are just another medical condition. We want to keep you safe and alive.
Shit, we even want to help people STAY high! Most medics titrate the amount of Narcan to make sure people STAY stoned even during an opiate OD. All I care about is keeping you breathing.
We DO NOT judge addiction.
It's BEHAVIOR that we judge.
We DO judge lying, refusal to take care of basic needs to force overworked and underpaid staff to do it for them, abusive behavior toward staff, sexism, and assault.
Oh, and please, DO NOT ask staff to engage in your kink with you. It's not cute, it's not funny, and it makes us DEEPLY uncomfortable.
Enjoy yourself. Just be honest, and polite, and don't make our lives harder (or try to kill us), and we'll take amazing care of you.
Oh, plus, saying what you took can save your life.
True story; I treated a married couple for a joint OD that nearly killed them, and it was something with a VERY unusual antidote. They were absolutely covered in their own feces, and they were turning blue from methemoglobinemia.
The only reason they're still alive is that they told us what they took. They even told us HOW they took it (never ever EVER drink your poppers, kids!) That let us call ahead to the ER and get the word unusual stuff out of the pharmacy to help save their lives.
If they'd lied, they probably would have died before we figured out what to give them.
Have your fun, AND tell your medical team. And be kind.
-taps mic- the whole MC going âno pain medication, I donât want to cloud my mindâ trope is both ableist and shockingly popular for how plainly ableist it is
(protip: if youâre at the point where youâre being advised to take pain medication by people who donât want to give you pain medication then your mind is most certainly already clouded by pain)
With severe enough injuries, your personal opinion on pain meds doesnât even fucking matter because in order to physiologically heal, certain muscles need to be not involuntarily clenching in order to healâand they will be involuntarily clenching if you are in pain! Pain meds are not solely a palliative measure, they are also a form of direct, necessary treatment
When pain medication is deemed Necessary, it is so necessary that standard procedure is to take the next dose before the last one has worn off, because pain that severe is that debilitating
*pulls up a chair*  SO. First of all, HARD AGREE with everything said above me. Second of all⌠Let me tell you about wind up phenomenon. Your body starts to ramp up for pain the SECOND there is an insult to it, and the longer you wait to start pain management therapy THE WORSE YOUR NERVES WIND UP. And if you decide to take the pain meds later? THEY WILL BE SO MUCH LESS EFFECTIVE, because now youâre fighting the wind-up, too, not just the original pain.Â
Seriously. Go look it up. Itâs why we put pain meds on board before we even START doing surgery. Itâs why we do nerve blocks EVEN THOUGH WEâRE ALSO USING PAIN MEDS. Wind-up phenomenon is Bad Fucking News and it is DRAINING. It slows the healing process SO MUCH and sends all sorts of nasty stress hormones flying around your body to screw things up even more.
But letâs say that youâre still attached to this âI donât want to be fuzzy-brainedâ trope. I get it; I like it, too. I grew up on it. Hereâs the secret: just because your character doesnât want to be fuzz-brained by pain meds, that doesnât mean that they canât have pain relief. The drugs most commonly associated with that âfuzzy-brainedâ phenomenon? Opioids.
But guess what? *deep breath*
OPIOIDS ARE NOT THE ONLY PAIN RELIEF OPTION OUT THERE.
There are NSAIDs, there are steroidals, there are FUCKING NERVE BLOCKS. Hell, depending on the world and culture youâre writing in, acupuncture and other alternative pain relief modalities may also be a choice. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHOOSE OPIOIDS.
As an example from my own life⌠I have chronic back pain. The last time i herniated a disc and had an acutely debilitating pain episode, the doctor wanted to put me on opioids and muscle relaxers, because that was the standard treatment. I flat out fucking refused. Not because i didnât want to be âfuzzed upâ (I WAS IN FUCKING AGONY; BELIEVE ME, BEING FUZZED UP WAS THE LEAST OF MY WORRIES), but because the last two times a doctor proscribed them for me for this condition, they DIDNâT WORK and neither did the muscle relaxers.
You see⌠I have really horrific side effects from both opioids AND muscle relaxers. So the last two times I tried them, i ended up hunched over a toilet and sweating and weak and shivering like I had the flu for the entire time I was on them. And do you want to know the very last thing you want to be doing when your back is in spasm? HUNCHING AND RETCHING OVER A TOILET AND SHIVERING. Fuckâs SAKE that really sucked. OTZ So, I finally got the doctor to agree to prednisone and epidural steroid injections instead.
And do you know what? IT WORKED. NO PAIN. And GUESS WHAT GUESS WHAT⌠NO FUZZIES, EITHER. Just pain relief.
TL;DR? (Too late.)
DONâT DENY YOUR CHARACTERS PAIN RELIEF JUST BECAUSE YOUâRE SCARED TO RESEARCH OPTIONS BEYOND OPIOIDS.
That is all.
every time i have to do physical labor while in pain, cramping, or sick i think âoh, my MC goes through so much worse, medicate them.â
Also, there is fucking FANTASTIC data around hypnosis for pain relief, and if your character has a doctor who is hip to it, it can be MASSIVELY helpful, non addictive, and doesnât even require a pharmacist. And because it can be self induced, once your character knows how, itâs a skill they can use any time they need it.
IRL experience around this: I, who am not the smartest Scripty alive, once put myself intro a trance in an MRI machine (close space, SO LOUD, SO OBNOXIOUS) that I literally had a hard time following commands. As in, had to do WORK to wake up enough to take or hold a breath. I have also used hypnosis to lessen massive anxiety around dental work.
App to demonstrate how this would work: Reveri, made by a doc out of Stanford, free on iOS/Android. Not what I use personally, but very, very cool.
