the idea that people experiencing severe pain should be screaming, crying, flailing, and otherwise seeming to be in pain is largely unsupported by reality. is this a response that some people have to some kinds of pain? absolutely. should people who don't respond to pain in this way be dismissed or disbelieved? absolutely not.
ask anyone who deals with chronic pain. it would be exhausting to constantly project our pain in that way, and in some cases, it would make it worse. when i have a migraine, my voice becomes monotone and quiet, my movements slow down, and i don't emote much. this is my natural response to the pain, and doing helps me avoid making it worse.
i become that clip of captain holt saying, completely monotone with a deadpan delivery: "I am in... incredible pain." screaming, emoting, rapidly moving, even crying only make my pain worse. and when i'm experiencing a level of pain that would send abled people to the emergency room, the last thing i want to do is make it worse.
i shouldn't have to perform pain in order for you to believe me.
Fandom shit is just straight up not fun when everyone interprets everything in the worst possible faith and acts deliberately obtuse for the sole purpose of getting mad online
spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.
anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.
handing out flyers to transmascs about estradiol cream (can be used to keep your pussy wet and healthy but without triggering periods or having any feminizing effects) and transfemmes about Cialis (works even post-orchi)
and then telling both to start prep too
new blog same sexual health advocate. since making this post i’ve switched from cialis to topical testosterone cream though.
you can take both. i do both now. testosterone cream once a week, Cialis as needed. might start taking the cialis on a regular schedule too.
Would like to add on about the estrogen for transmascs; if you get dysphoric of the feeling of your vagina getting wet, there isultra-low doses of estrogen suppositories. I take a 10 microgram suppository of estrogen twice a week. It’s enough to make it easier for me to pee, but not enough to cause me to get wet. ✌️
I know a lot of guys skip looking into estrogen suppositories bc they don’t do vaginal penetration, but even if you are a top or only do anal penetration it’s still important to consider it as an option if you’re experiencing issues. Pelvic floor dysfunction caused by vaginal atrophy can make it hard to relax the muscles in the pelvis, making it hard to pee and make it hard to relax the anus. If you find yourself having trouble peeing or trouble relaxing for anal, talk to your doctor about your options for treatments. Once I started 10 micrograms biweekly I had a lot easier time prepping for anal.
I also originally didn't like doing the estrogen cream because, at the dose I was taking, it made me feel like I was on my period all the time (it didn't trigger a period, just made me feel crampy and sick), but then I used a non-hormonal alternative vaginal moisturizer for awhile which worked really well, but I just so happened to be using a small amount of the estrogen for dryness stone my urethra and that small dose also worked for my vaginal atrophy as well with none of the side effects.

Also, please do not listen to how people talk about cover letters on this site. Cover letters are important, and in many industries you can be damn sure they'll be read. And no, they're not 'fanfic about working in your office', or just re-stating the resume contents in a fancier guise. If you treat them like that, then of course they're not doing much for you. That makes you sound like a syncophantic windbag, and it's not doing anything else to help.
I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.
The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.
This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.
And the other mistake? Everyone writes cover letters that are too long. One page is fine. Two is the absolute maximum, and that's if you have a lot of specific things to say. It's a waste of your time and theirs to pad it out with fluff. Of my two most recent successful cover letters (i.e. jobs for which I was interviewed) one was 390 words and the other was 550. That's the length of this post. How long did it take me to write this post? About 15 minutes to write, 5 to proof and edit. That's how long you should be spending on a cover letter, maximum.
Addendum: the LLM thing.
Yes, a lot of hiring managers now will get an LLM to 'read' cover letters and flag the interesting ones. This is especially true in Big Corporate contexts. You still benefit from writing a non-generic cover letter. This is for two reasons. First, more unique wording and content - that is, the kind of content that comes from actually answering the question - will show up in the LLM summary of your letter too. And second, employers who use LLMs do so as a primary screen, and then actually read the letters that pass it. So, if you're good, someone is still going to actually read that letter. I know it feels gross, but you just have to put the LLM out of your mind and write as if your primary audience is still a person. Because it still is!
#as someone who has never been actual HR but has done application review + interviews at several jobs for many many different positions#if youre applying for an IT job dont talk about foucault for three pages single spaced#anyway you can do everything right and still not through. do not despair over your own person. despair over the arbitrary etc systems (tags via @fizzybelts)
I... I have to know more about this cover letter. Please tell me about the Foucault IT cover letter.

the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.
