Land for a prince of void?
Princes of Void destroy Void; they destroy Secrecy, Darkness, the Void itself, Confusion, and Irrelevance. Their challenge is to learn not to wantonly destroy, but to control their destruction and destroy only what needs to be destroyed, limiting the fallout of their actions and becoming more beneficial to the team.
A Prince of Void’s land could be the Land of Obscurity and Opulence.
The consorts of this Land are incredibly wealthy, and see themselves as significantly better than anyone else around them; they have formed high society circles and barely interact with anyone outside of these circles, instead involving themselves in a series of gossip and backstabbings in an attempt to steal the wealth of other consorts. It is a high-risk game that they play, and immediately upon entering your world, you can see the toll it has taken; those that fall from grace are left to rot in the darkest pits of the Land, so completely Lost and Confused that they no longer remember who they are, where they are, or what they were meant to be doing.
When you first attempt to enter the high society circles, you realise something very important; the things that these consorts are using as wealth are actually worthless. They’re common as mud in the darker parts of the Land, but rarer in the lighter parts; their lack of understanding of the Land itself has transformed the wealth of the consorts into something entirely fraudulent.
As you wander the darker areas of your Land, you find that Secrets are abundant; the forgotten consorts sometimes murmur things that make no sense, things they don’t understand, a tiny piece of information lost in the depths of their minds. Those that live in the lighter parts of your Land are so wrapped up in their own worlds that they have no interest in what the Land is meant to be and how you, as the player, are meant to fix it; all of your Land lore is completely Hidden from you behind incoherent whispers and consorts who simply don’t care.
The high society circles are Irrelevant, and everything else is Hidden. You have to destroy these things in order to find the Truth.
- Destroy the Darkness and Confusing surrounding the consorts that whisper their long-forgotten Secrets. By helping them to remember who they are and what they know, you’ll come closer to understanding the Truth behind your Land, and behind your Denizen, who seems to be surprisingly vacant.
- Destroy the Irrelevance of the high society consorts. You will realise that they’re still essentially useless to you; they are so deeply involved with their wealth that they completely shun you. You have to attain their Secrets and smash it right open for the Truth. This will be much harder than you first anticipate: if you destroy their wealth, they will be bitter towards you and refuse to speak with you, seeing you as a blight upon their Luck and wealth; if you make their wealth Relevant, they will believe you are trying to steal from them, and completely shut themselves off. You have to destroy the Void in their minds to either open up their Information - reverting them to a time before the Denizen arrived - or reveal the Truth to them about you, your intentions, and who they are.
- Destroy the Obscurity of the Land itself. You’ll quickly realise that something is wrong with your consorts; those that you have managed to squeeze information out of seem to actively forget who you are and what you did after your conversation with them if they remain in the Darkness. You decide to gather more Information, and come to learn that it’s the Darkness that makes people forget, and the wealth that causes this Darkness; the abundance of the wealth in the darker areas causes your consorts to forget everything about themselves as soon as they come in contact with a substantial amount of it, and the presence of this wealth in the high societies, while not nearly as impressive, is enough to Obscure their actual purpose and the Truth from your consorts’ minds, letting them fade into Irrelevance. You have to destroy every single last piece of wealth on your Land to ensure that the Obscurity and Darkness is finally lifted - and the Truth revealed.
You may wonder exactly where the temperance comes into it; how is a Prince of Void, from this, meant to learn not to destroy Void without reason or cause? The answer lies within the consorts themselves; if you simply destroy the Void around the consorts, then you will plunge every single one of them into the Darkness, increasing the amount of Void within the Land; it is almost inevitable that this will happen to some consorts as a direct consequence of your actions. If you destroy the Irrelevance of the high society consorts’ wealth, you’ll struggle to destroy the Void of Irrelevance around them, since their money will suddenly actually be worth something and only validate their tight-knit circles and their lack of desire to open up to the Prince. You have to go slowly, destroy bit by bit in order to uncover the Truth, and ensure that sudden actions don’t completely lock you out of your ability to complete the Quest.
With the Obscurity of the land removed, you are finally given the Truth; there is no Denizen. At least, not a live one. The wealth the consorts have been using were the scales of your long-dead Denizen, whose rotting corpse was causing quite literally all of your issues to begin with. The final destruction of Void in this Land, then, is to gather more Information from your now-normal consorts to understand who your Denizen was, why they died, and what your Choice was meant to be. You find that your Denizen was a scribe of sorts, and had a cache of hidden wealth (your grist hoard) and scrolls that contained Information on how to traverse the Void, defeat things such as the Horrorterrors, and gave a complete and clear understanding of what SBURB is and what your Quest was meant to be - and exactly how you’re meant to beat the session as a whole.
Of course, by the time you reach the cache, most of the scrolls are rotten; enough remains that you can feasibly piece together the last and biggest Secrets of the game, and your consorts luckily used to read the scrolls (though most suffer from a lingering sense of amnesia when it concerns the Denizen). It’s completely up to you, the Prince of Void, whether or not you want to do this - but if you do, you will take the Denizen’s place as the Scribe, and you will learn things about SBURB, the Void, your players, and everything that awaits you in the next universe that you never would have thought were possible.
