it feels like there's a direct line from the question that kicked off the Shapers War being "why can't I keep my family safe?" and the reveal that Sylandri directly controlled which elves were allowed to have children. between "we were the only people that knew we were doing it without a reward. the land that was promised to us after death was the same as life, just more suffering. endless wasteland, choked by ash and fire." and "an eternity, to have all of your complexity, all of your possibility, all of your dreams folded into an idyllic paradise where you would be punished for the most minor infraction?" no wonder the orcs were the first to kill their god and the elves were the last. whether it was a certainty or not at the time of the Shapers' War, the elves had to know there was at least a chance this rebellion would end in a slow extinction event for their people, and I'm inclined to believe this might be in part the reason they named their god-slaying weapon The Last Arrow. therefore, Vaelus and those who fought for Sylandri were likely asking themselves the same question that motivated the Lloys to build the Pariah Blades.

it's also interesting in the difference between the elves of the Old Path and the practitioners of other races. if the ability to have children was decided to only be granted to the most faithful then elves like Hannan and his wife were foregoing the possibility of ever passing on their traditions to their biological children as the other races of the Old Path could. of course, biological family isn't the only type of family, but it does mean the elven druids had to put themselves in more danger in order to find others who shared their beliefs. there were no generations of secret worship. they had to intentionally seek each other out just to learn about the Path, let alone find community with each other, and if they were discovered, if they confided in the wrong person, they were persecuted the most harshly by their goddess of life and nature.

in the blessing of Azgra, the orcish druid Agari Shadow blesses him most of all for "his honesty, because of all the gods of Aramán, ours was the only one who never lied about what he truly was." Sylandri is initially set up to be seen as the kindest of the Shapers, the Green Mother who allowed her people to live in an eternal paradise even after death, and slowly, that portrayal has been peeled back as we learn more about Vaelus and Hannan to something just as malicious as Azgra. for all his cruelty—and make no mistake, he was cruel and the orcs suffered greatly under him—Azgra did not leave a blight on Kahad as he died, as far as we know. his Barrowdell is deemed the only positive Barrowdell in Aramán. in her final moments, Sylandri was so spiteful thst she damned her people, both those who were faithful to her and those who weren't, to genocide rather than see them flourish without her.

murray and azune having conflict over their worldviews and her concern over how deep his lies are and if he’d ever actually turn against what they both have fought for and believe in: ✅

framing murray’s occasional distrust of azune and her lack of infantilizing him vs demodus (her student) in an unflattering light because you think azune deserved better/more sympathy: ❌

no but seriously, to negatively frame the difference between how murray treats azune (grown, 27-year old man she works with) and demodus (22-year old grad student she feels responsible for) is so disingenuous. yeah, demodus is in his 20s. but murray is, what? mid-40s? and a professor at a school where he is a student? of course she calls him "kid." azune is not that much older than demodus but he is older, and exists far outside of the institution where murray has seniority and authority. azune is a peer. demodus is a student. murray treats them appropriately under those differing contexts.

and murray's concerns about azune's lies eating him alive to the point where he starts believing them/working against her are an interesting reflection of her character and her fears and should not be minimized into people being upset with how she treats him. maybe it's about murray, and not about azune, and maybe we should pay less attention to her being ungenerous to him and more to what it says about murray's current anxieties. or is that centering her too much for some people

#when murray first met demodus he was a child dropped off at magic boarding school. when murray first met azune he was a veteran.#it's tragic that azune didn't get to have a childhood and there's something poignant in that contrast; murray herself feels guilty about it #but it isn't her fault and she isn't being unreasonable; this is an awful position to be in!#this is her best friend in the whole word and the world has turned upside down. she doesn't know what she can rely on anymore.#being fearlessly honest and wholly herself has been one of her biggest strengths; it's something azune loves and admires about her.#of course she's worried about him getting lost in the lies.#cr spoilers

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

Bolaire Lathalia can be worn by someone voluntarily. Someone can wear him on purpose. He does not have to trick people into wearing him and take their lives and kill them. He can be worn by volunteers.

We know this. This is an established fact. This is how he worked up until he gained agency.

This is the context in which he kills.

In order to discuss whether or not he's a serial killer, you have to start with the fact that he deliberately chooses murder over pursuing other options, which he does have.

He can be worn by someone who chooses to wear him. He 100% knows this.

A lot of people have done a lot of murder apologia for Bolaire about how he has to do this for survival, but he doesn't. Like, flat out, he doesn't have to kill to continue to exist. He could choose to work with people and find compatible partners who are willing.

He doesn't.

final thought - breaking the pride tradition and more than likely won't make a new piece. the top one from TDOV is all i'm making this year. i have my focus on other projects currently and i don't want to force a poster design. these came from a specific head space and my current head space is Very Tired lmao so i wanna work on other things. 👍
