Feels like a good time to remind the Dr. STONE fandom that things the author says about a piece of media does not actually make it canon.
I like listening to what authors have to say about their stuff, especially as a writer. But it's best when they talk about their intentions and what they were trying to do.
It's not just that I don't like what he says. Miyoshi says many things I like, but I still don't consider that YuuMori canon. I like hearing mostly about the process.
I think I might consider the fanbook canon. Yeah, it contradicts the manga and anime sometimes, but the manga and anime contradict themselves, too, sometimes. I think at the very least to be canon you have to commit it to publicly being media, to be part of the Greater [Specific Media] Universe, rather than just talking about the Greater [Specific Medida] Universe.
And on the topic of how Inagaki answers questions as, should you even listen to him as a Fan...
Inagaki answers questions like, "IDK, this is the vibe I get from it," basically all the time, admits to straight up not remembering a lot of stuff, and, critically, he is not the only creator of the canon.
(Especially regarding Stanley, whom he clearly does not actually find very interesting, and in fact much of whom's character actually came from Boichi anyway)
Everything he says in terms of This Is The Vibe I Get is not really any different than a particularly educated fan, except is even particularly educated when he cannot remember anything in canon. No.
Inagaki is not a character writer. His characters are plot devices at best to push the story he already wanted to tell forward. He has no interest in developing or growing them. That's fine. Dr. STONE, at least, doesn't really require that for the narrative.
But it does mean it's kind of stupid to ask him to have Character Thoughts. He has no Character Thoughts. For more examples, look at all of canon. His character thoughts are all explicitly, "This is the image/vibe I get." Sir???
Inagaki can't read. And is so painfully heterosexual he literally has gay blinders.
And maybe we should all be thankful for the gay blinders, because if he actually realized what was happening, maybe he would have tried to nix stuff.
NGL, he seemed kind of panicked this time, like it finally set in that people really think that, and it never occurred to him and it makes him kind of uncomfortable. Consider: early on, he actually said that Stanley and Xeno didn't really have any other friends friends. And then he was saying actually no they both totally have other friends Stanley makes friends like normal. They're not that close!!!
Sir, you wrote Stanley sacrificing his life and his identity for Xeno. That is meteoric love on a scale rivaling Byakuya's for Senku. Regardless of the tenor of it, you cannot say they are not deeply important to each other, on a personal level, beyond any ambitions or dictatorship. That is personal attachment.
Did you forget that, Inagaki? I think you forgot that, too.
