if you don't know what is going on in Kerr County, Texas right now, here's a recap. Kerrville, Hunt, San Angelo and many other small towns and communities are settled along the Guadalupe River which runs from Kerr County in the Hill Country to the San Antonio Bay on the Gulf Coast. Last night, due to a storm that settled over the area and stalled, and is continuing to stall, the Guadalupe rose from being nearly dry at about 3ft last night to approximately 27ft in 45 MINUTES. Kerrville, Hunt, Comfort, and other surrounding areas received nearly 10'' of rain in 3 hours, which for some areas is an entire summer's worth of rain. IN 3 HOURS. Kerrville has many very popular camping sites that are packed with campers for the independence day holiday. To make matters worse, there are several children's summer camps along the Guadalupe River that were evacuated in the middle of last night. Over 100 people are missing, including 23 young girls from Camp Mystic. 24 fatalities are confirmed already. More rain is expected to fall tonight, and the river is likely to rise more and to crest in Spring Branch Tx. The area is being described as completely devastated and destroyed. Entire houses swept away, people being rescued from trees, power outages, a highway destroyed. Children's summer camps like Camp Mystic and Camp La Junta were evacuated but others like Mo Ranch and possibly Honey Creek and John Knox Ranch are having to shelter in place all while without power, wifi and other amenities due to the flooding. Heart O The Hills Summer Camp, while not in session, was completely destroyed, and their director Jane, a giant in the Camp world, is sadly deceased after being swept away while getting counselors to higher ground. The news is now saying the Guadalupe could rise, and very quickly, to 40ft tonight, meaning it would likely cover Hwy 281. PLEASE STAY SAFE IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA! LISTEN TO EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS AND DO NOT GO OUT ON THE ROADS UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!

Actually, I think this does link in with a wider conversation that I have been thinking for a while Tumblr maybe needs to hear.
There's a common meme on this site now that no one here has any reading comprehension skills. The best one is, of course, the original "No offense but reading comprehension on this site is piss poor/How dare you say we piss on the poor" post, which gave rise to the nickname "pissing-on-the-poor website". There's also the "I like pancakes/How dare you say waffles are terrible" one. Both of these are great, because they're silly jokey ways to show two closely related phenomena that are probably the commonest ways to fail a reading comprehension check.
The first is someone reading certain catchphrases or buzzwords in the post, and based on their own biases or prior experiences or whatever else, their brain simply fills in what it reckons the poster is saying on the topic. Instead of reading the rest of the sentence and digesting it, the reader then just uses their assumption as the interpretation, and reacts to that.
The second is closely related, because it also uses biases and prior experiences to to interpret the post, but rather than ignoring what the OP is actually saying, it instead performs a series of gymnastic leaps to construct a whole new assertion on the OP's behalf that simply isn't there.
There's also a third, of course; that one is people being so eager to feel smug and superior over someone they perceive as Bad that they wilfully assume the OP is stupid or being serious when they're actually joking. And if the reader hadn't been so blinded by their desire to get to look down on someone, they'd have seen the very obvious tells, sometimes even including sentences like "Obviously this is a joke." (I think we have all seen examples of these. Also, in a bid to avoid as many reading comprehension fails here as possible, this does not include misunderstandings borne entirely of neurodiverse struggles to parse intentions; but, neurodiverse people are just as likely as neurotypicals to have ego play a part in their misinterpretation of others, and that is what this point is about.)
And the thing is... actually, we are all capable of any of these. I imagine a sizable chunk of people reading until this point were probably thinking "Lol, yeah, people are so stupid," but na, nage, I'm not having that. Literally everyone does these sometimes. And it becomes a particular risk when the topic under discussion is something that might brush against an issue that is a pressure point for you, like a social justice talking point that you are forever having to argue with internet strangers about, for example. Your brain holds schemas! And sometimes it likes to pattern match things before it deigns to tell you about its findings! And that can hit you right in the emotions, which if they are strong enough, really can shut down all rational thought.
But. This brings me to the real point of the post.
Because the thing is, we have all saddled up and gone to war under these conditions, or at the very least been strongly tempted to. And a vital skill that literally everyone has to learn, sooner or later, is:
Before you hit 'reply', double check the post to make sure you fucking understood it.
And that does not mean "simply re-read, confirm your bias, carry on." It means, "Is it possible to read this post from the point of view of someone who doesn't intend it the way I've taken it? If I put myself in the shoes of an innocent, could they still have written these words? Is there another interpretation for these phrases?"
And you do have to do this step. You simply do have to. Because if your desire is to 'clap back' and call someone a gargling knobskin made of garbage, fuck me sideways but you must see that it is imperative that you check if they actually deserve that kind of treatment first. You cannot spend your time claiming that we must all choose to be kind and then not bother doing your due diligence before screaming a person's various and assorted bigotries at them. If you misread it, and they were innocent - you are the raging aggressive cunt in this situation.
It does not matter that you reacted from an emotional place of normally having to defend yourself either, by the way. Sure, that makes the quality of your human soul better than that of the average Redditor who just enjoys anonymously hurting people, I guess? But it's also irrelevant. If you messaged someone and called them a misogynist because you performed several mental somersaults and landed on your own sore spot when they meant no such thing, you are the attacker. You owe them an apology. And yeah, sure, you can explain your over-reaction as the product of your normal experiences if you like, but that is only an explanation, not an excuse. You are still the asshole here. You still need to apologise and mean it.
And you could have avoided it if you'd done that due diligence, as you should have. If you're going to take a swing, make sure it's the right target. This was once described to me as donkey people - they don't think, they just kick. This is admittedly a little unkind to donkeys, who always do their due diligence, but I feel it's an apt metaphor.
TL;DR: If you feel moved to angrily reply to something, first make sure you've interpreted it right. Don't be a donkey person. And if you ask for clarification, people are innocent until proven guilty. Ask nicely. If they are a bigot, you can then smelt them for parts.
“it’s weird for queer minors to be friends with queer adults” oh my god. ohhh my god.
intergenerational community support, especially in a community that is split so much age wise as the queer community, is immensely fucking important. get to know older queers and younger queers. this is how communities frazzle out and die to infighting.
the hypothetical queer adult that people are mad over in the post this is refrencing is 35 years old. only 35.
its weird for any minors to be friends with any adults, queer or not. There should be no reason why unrelated adults or minors should be making close relationships in any sense outside of professional ones. I understand wanting education, but they can be taught when they are adults as well.
is this a joke.
If you believe there is something inherently wrong with adults being friends with teens, you've been brainwashed into believing that every adult sees youth as a form solicitation.
This makes you part of the problem.
This is a moral grey area, and that makes it so much more interesting to talk about. Of course, there is nothing wrong with young people having adult friends. When I started my first job at 16, most of my co-workers were adults and it was a blast! I leaned so much. But being friends with someone under age is a massive responsibility that not every adult is equipped to handle.
If you can't be a positive influence on a minor, you shouldn't associate with them. And if a child asks for advice on a subject that blurs the non familial minor/adult relationship, you have to be able to send them to the right resources without trying to be that resource yourself.
Why? Because we all like to think that we are experts, but most of the time, we aren't. If a 16yo asks a 25yo a question about sex, should the 25yo answer it? The answer is probably no. Instead, a mature adult would redirect the teen towards a credible resource. And phrase in a positive light. Example: "I read this book when I was your age. It helped a lot."
The main reason people feel uncomfortable with adult/teen friendships is because they've experienced adult/teen friendships that weren't healthy. If a teen asks and adult what it's like to smoke, they don't need you, as an adult, to give them a blunt. They probably don't need shame either.
Everything is a balance and if you can't approach that balance with maturity and care, stay away from teens.

In regards to the added pic: this might seem obvious to most, but seeing as it was placed here, it's proof enough that Purity Culture and self-censoring are still solidly entrenched on here.
The best remedy to both issues remains exposure. Read books - especially books you'd happen to find objectionable. View works of art that don't necessarily align with your own values, and try and see what's being depicted. You're allowed to be disgusted by all sorts of things, of course - but it's important to consider that what might feel gratuitous or blatant to you might actually carry meaning or very specific intent to either the artist themselves, or to some theorists approaching the medium with a critical eye.
[A screenshot of a tweet that reads, "Just a reminder that fictional characters aren't real people who need to be held to account for their actions. They are vehicles to tell a story.
Their flaws and contradictions are a feature and not a bug. And appreciating the role they play in the story is not a moral failing."
It's followed by a meme of a woman with a speech bubble above her talking to a small child, implying that the first post is what she says to him.]
I keep telling myself that I'll actually remember to post my art here and I never do but eh

The Walking Dead (2010-2022) ↳ Episode: Still
THE WALKING DEAD ⋗ 5.16 Conquer
October 31, 1982 It’s cold. The wind bites bitterly against his cheeks as he steps forward, frozen earth crunching beneath his feet. The moon above him is crescent. For a fleeting moment, the image of Lupin swims lazily to the forefront of Severus' mind. He wonder's where the man is now—alone, friendless, his mate twisted within the impenetrable binds of Azkaban. Severus scoffs into the unassuming midnight air. ‘Serves him right,’ he mutters to no one. The winds grow in intensity, blowing his hair across his face and burning his ears with ice, but he doesn’t seek shelter. He continues on, to their spot. An assuming dip in the woods, a turnabout of trees in a half circle. Not quite in the forbidden forest, and not quite outside of it. It’s a place where flowers grow, well outside of their rightful season. Severus drops to his knees in front of a patch of Lilium. He lets himself sink into the pinks, reds, and oranges. The blooms flower out, as though they are reaching for something just outside of their grasp. Their stems point upwards—to the sky. He reminds himself that he’s at Hogwarts. The Dark Lord is dead. But, try as he might, Severus can’t cast aside the bone deep chill... the images… James Potter's lifeless body on the floor, no shred of the pompous smirk he so carelessly flaunted. The image of Lily… Severus drops to the earth floor, and for the first time succumbs to the darkness. This was their place. The place they talked endlessly about nothing and everything. Where her auburn hair glistened in the sunshine, and her green eyes danced with mirth, with possibility, with hope for the future. Severus snatches a lily blossom and crumbles in his hand.

The amount of misinformation, misdirection, and whole ass lies I've seen on this app recently is astounding.
Please don't allow yourself to be bullied into choosing a side when you aren't fully informed on the issue. Just because you can write a good book, draw a good comic, or post decent fanfiction doesn't mean you have the ability to learn everything required to know about a centuries old conflict overnight. Ignore the posts attempting to force people into their way of thinking by guilt and shame.
I encourage everyone to do as much research as possible. To look at both sides with an open mind. But that process could take days, months, or even years for some people. Especially when wading through the endless propaganda-yes, on BOTH sides. Be kind to yourself if you are struggling to get it. And be kind to others.

“How does it work?” Albus asks, his curiosity piqued. He picks up a small, heart-shaped block of painted wood with a magnifying glass in the centre and taps it against the board. Nothing happens.
“It’s like a game,” Scorpius explains, sitting on the bed and gesturing for Albus to join him. “The kids put their fingers on the planchette and pretend to perform a séance. Supposedly, the spirit communicates with them by moving the planchette over the letters and numbers on the board. There is always one cheeky kid that moves it themselves, to trick the others.”
Albus and Scorpius find a Spirit Board hidden beneath the floorboards at Twelve Grimmauld Place.
Literally drunk!
"I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I'm a married man—"
"Harry, I'm your wife!"
Harry Potter had 3 regrets in his life.
Not noticing Ginny Weasley earlier.
Believing the vision Voldemort sent him that Sirius was actually kidnapped.
Letting George Weasley plan his 30th birthday party.
Now Harry was 10? Maybe 14 drinks firewhiskey shots in, and he was dying. Any moment now, Albus Dumbledore would take him to Kings Cross Station and take him to the afterlife because Harry James Potter was piss drunk.
He was not the only one plastered. Ron was wearing his shirt has a hat and Hermione was walking around and telling any person who would listen that she could list the Runes Alphabet backwards in less than thirty seconds.
But for Harry, all he could focus on was the ceiling, and how it kept spinning. He couldn't focus on anything, but could feel someone hovering near him who smelt like a familiar flowery scent. But beyond that he knew only three things.
He was married.
He loved his wife.
The first law of Gamp's Transfiguration Law prevented anyone from conjuring food out of thin air.
But he also knew that this random woman was trying to get him to come home with her.
"Harry, I think it's time we go home," she said, placing a hand on his shoulder. Harry caught another wiff of floral, and almost collapsed. He could not move his eyes from his left hand, where a gold band rested on his 4th finger, for fear of any sudden movement might cause him to vomit all over the floor.
wife. wife. wife. wife. wife.
you have a wife.
"Harry, doesn't bed sound absolutely cozy right now?" The witch behind him asked. "We can even take off our clothes and cuddle."
That was too far.
"I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I'm a married man—" Harry said, shoving his left hand in this woman's face, showing off his wedding band.
"Harry, I'm your wife!"
Oh.
Harry looked up and stared at the person who had been coaxing him to bed this entire time.
Ginny.
Beautiful
Wonderful
Pefect
Ginny.
"Hi Love!" Harry said, pulling her close to his chest.
Ginny laughed into his chest, "Let's get you home."
