A Total Eclipse of the Heart

Where after the explosion at the training center it was decided that an additional backup plan was in order. That plan being to obtain the most advanced animatroic+AIs currently available, download whatever relevant skills into them that they could before the launch, and put them on the ship to be activated in the case of crew casualty.

Ryland, of course, wakes up alone and doesn't know to activate them until later when Rocky is poking around and brings Sun and Moon online manually via a very obviously labeled panel with two lit green buttons and a prompt on the screen asking if help is needed. (Rocky will of course give Ryland some shit for missing this but, tbf, alot was going on.)

Shenanigans then ensue between Rocky and his three kidnapped child-rearing earth beings as one would expect. (Moon and rocky often imitating each other or conspiring about sleep setups, while Sun takes solace with Armando as the other 'competent' crew member, and Ryland is just doing his best lol)

Cut to the fishing expedition explosion and everyone is down for the count. Despite Rocky's best efforts, Grace's heart does stop for a couple moments before he can get him to Armando to resuscitate. The lack of detectable crew member heartbeats triggers a failsafe that activates a third backup animatronic: Eclipse.

Recovery and shenanigan proceed as above (now plus one member and four extra arms) ending with everyone on Erid. The bots get some upgrades to withstand the high temps but now they can act as Ryland's helping hands directly in the classroom or on field trips around the planet and on from there.

Aaaa, Sun tries to be unaffected because he has to be professional especially around the kids! Omg the kids get it into his head that if you like someone that means they have cooties! He’s avoiding you and just like “What no I don’t like you of course not, you have cooties!” But secretly he’s dying to risk catching cooties because he really REALLY REALLY wants to hold your hand.

Which was not to say that service was easy. Service to Hyrea took one into dangerous places, and dangerous work. A dedicate of Hyrea went into war, and plague, and famine. Risked death a thousand ways, over and over again. And yet it wasn’t difficult to serve her, if you were the right kind of person. For a person who looked at the sick or wounded or starving and longed to help, it was the easiest thing in the world.

Hyrea marked her devotees in a way impossible to disguise or to mistake. It was possible to replicate the blue tattoos, to an extent, though the ‘blindfold’ was hard to do, eyelids being difficult. The bands around the wrists were easier. But only Hyrea could make them glow with that faint, spectral light. No-one could look on that light, and not know exactly who they were looking at. There were stories about it – about the six healers who had walked onto a battlefield and stood between the two armies, and stopped the battle cold, for neither side had dared to lift a hand against the healers. About proud gods who drove out the humble Hyrean healers, so that only their own priests could heal, and cities emptied by disease spreading from the poorest quarters, where the proud priests would not go. About the warlord who, having struck his enemy down, saw a Hyrean healer kneel to help the man, and in fury struck the healer down as well – and died the next moment, with a dozen arrows in his back, fired by his own men. About villages struck by plague, who saw the blue lights approaching through mist, and opened their barricaded gates to hope. About terrible battles that lasted from dawn until dusk… and then nights full of pale blue lights, moving among the fallen, and a hundred or two hundred or five hundred men found living on the field the next morning.

Temples of Hyrea rose in odd places. In busy cities, in border towns, in little villages, with no apparent rhyme or reason. Only a certainty, in the part of some priest or priestess, that here there would be need of them. They were good at predicting need.

The ancient Father who led their temple rose to his feet, his face pale. “Brothers and sisters,” he called, and the unnatural clamour did not drown out his voice. “Brothers and sisters, it is a warning. Some terrible peril comes. We must prepare.” 

They locked the gates and barred them. The few guards took up bows, and stood on the walls. The youngest and oldest were guided into hidden rooms. They were a peaceful order. The brothers and sisters did not use weapons. Now they clutched staffs and tools, frightened but trying to be brave. 

Below the temple, a village nestled into the small valley. There was no lord here, no jarl to protect the village with soldiers. The only protection the village had was the temple, and whatever scant protection the gods’ presence might offer. The temple had been built across the only pass in the mountains, the only way in or out. 

They were a peaceful order, but the village was theirs to protect. The farmers and the crafters, the poor, the sick, the lame, the young and the old… they had no protection but the temple. So the brothers and sisters clutched their tools and their staffs and their makeshift clubs, frightened but brave.
