Or the day on which another Ukrainian tragedy occurred 83 years ago — the Koryukivka tragedy or Koryukivka massacre. On 1, 2 and 9 March 1943, in the town of Koryukivka in the Chernihiv region, a punitive expedition was carried out by Hungarian units in response to the actions of Soviet partisans led by NKVD officer Oleksiy Fedorov. This event is made even more tragic by the fact that Fedorov's partisan group outnumbered the punitive forces by almost 10 times, but the partisans did nothing to save the residents of Koryukivka. The scale of the tragedy is exceptional among the settlements of Ukraine, the USSR and Europe. The Koryukivka killings exceed the Belarusian Khatyn in terms of the number of victims by almost 45 times, the Czech Lidice by 41 times, and the French Oradour by 12 times. As a result of the punitive action in Koryukivka, about 7,000 civilians were killed and 1,290 buildings were burned down. 5,612 victims of the mass murder remain unidentified. Koryukivka was almost completely burned down, and the population that lived there was exterminated.

And in 2022, Koryukivka defended itself against Russian occupiers. The locals stopped them with their bare hands. The phrase "The tanks are driving backwards" has now become a true treasure of Koryukivka and all of Ukraine.

Because 83 years ago, and 4 years ago, Ukraine fought back against the invaders.
