Every 21st century piece of writing advice: Make us CARE about the character from page 1! Make us empathize with them! Make them interesting and different but still relatable and likable!
Every piece of classic literature: Hi. It's me. The bland everyman whose only purpose is to tell you this story. I have no actual personality. Here's the story of the time I encountered the worst people I ever met in my life. But first, ten pages of description about the place in which I met them.
Modern writing advice: Yes your protagonist should have flaws but ultimately we should root for them and like them from the beginning :)
Charles Dickens: Here is the worst ugliest rudest meanest nastiest bitch youāve ever met in your life.
Modern writing advice: Make sure your POV character goes through a significant arc! Make sure they are changed by the narrative! Make sure they learn a lesson!
Narrators of every book of the 19th century: the lesson I learned is these people fucking suck, sayonara you freaks
Modern writing advice: Itās all about the character overcoming obstacles and learning! They learn their lesson so they can fix their mistakes and make good choices in the future! Itās a character arc! Itās called growth! Readers love it!
Everyone from ancient times through the 19th century: would you like to watch a Guy fuck up twenty times in a row
Whose familiar is this? or has someone āwarg"ed into this crow? I thought we already agreed to use emails
āTemporaryā? WTF. I hope this was only temporary because the crow was like, āmy work is done hereā and not that some dickhead was like NO CROWS ALLOWED.
The bird became a temporary mascot at Allen Dale Elementary School in Grants Pass in November.
So I read the article and itās actually a bit emotional. Itās basically the bird version of Homeward Bound.
The crow was a rescued bird raised and taken care of by a family who loved him very much. He was āfreeā in that they didnāt keep him inside, but he was very much habituated to the family/their home and would come up to them and chat with them and knock on their windows in the morning saying āMom wake upā.
He apparently liked to tease people who were afraid of him, and one day when the family were away for the holidays a neighbor caught him and sent him to an animal sanctuary. The sanctuary released him out into the wild and the crow, Cosmo, tried to find his way home.
He followed cars he thought belonged to his family, would sit outside of buildings calling out for them/talking to people, and made it to the elementary school because he recognized someone inside. He used to play with children at his familyās farm and so he enjoyed playing with the children at the school.
Meanwhile, his family WAS looking for him, putting up his picture and trying to track him down.
Eventually they were alerted to the talking crow at the school and successfully reunited with him and brought him back to their farm. Apparently Cosmo has not gone back to the neighborsā place ever since.
Iām a bit emotional about it. This crow really loved this family, and they really loved him.
Just going to leave these here. Happy belated Valentineās Day. ~DA$HIE~ (Credit goes to @benkling)

i may be terminally online but at least i have fun and curate my experience to cater to my interests and don't intentionally seek out things that will make me feel worse and don't take out my personal issues on strangers on the internet

Editing? Oh you mean fic patching.
Protagonist now has more complex motivations.
Protagonist now remembers key facts about important people. He no longer develops convenient amnesia between cutscenes.
Protagonist now has a cooldown on certain adverbs. Adverbs have been buffed by 30% to compensate.
Developer note: Adverbs are important to writing but they are sometimes overused. This change keeps adverbs relevant while encouraging the use of adjectives and verbs.
The horse now has a name.
Deuteragonist snark power has been increased to 150, up from 75.
Characters now no longer reference the previous versionās climate and have been updated to react appropriately to the currently set season.
Solved a glitch where supernumerary limbs would sometimes emerge during complex physical interactions.
Should no longer display ā[insertnamehere]ā during conversations and narration. All of such occurrances have been replaced with the appropriate tags.
Conversation continuity has been improved. Characters will no longer inappropriately respond with lines from previous iterations of the narrative.
All references to āEvent Aā have been purged to reflect changes in narrative structure.
Now with more thematically-consistent swearing.
Back-to-back repeated words that resulted from sentence rearranging or start/stop editing have been cleared.
Paragraphs which contained two or more instances of the same adjective have had their adjectives updated to accurately reflect a playerās vocabulary inventory.
Minor time traveling issues have been resolved, all characters should now exist in the same tense.
Punctuation has been improved. Commas have been reduced by half.
Characters sighing has been reduced by 30%.
Characters looking at things or people during conversations has been reduced by 40%. To make up for this, characters thinking about the conversation has been boosted and descriptive narrative has been added.
Title has been applied.
someday, in the distant future, humans will once again be capable of hearing the phrase āwhat is loveā without also feeling the primal urge to Ā respond with ābaby donāt hurt meā
So at that point, people will sayĀ ābaby donāt hurt meāā¦no more?
I tried to scroll past I really did
beautiful set up, perfect follow-through. great teamwork everyone
i think more characters should have canes actually. theyre cool. theyre sexy. they can have swords in them. they come in any color u want.
alright Iām rbing to add onto this bc itās getting way more attention than I ever expected and people seem to be more likely to check the rbs than the replies. plus I want people to be able to rb this version.
the point of this post is not swords. it is not how well someone can fight w a cane. the point is I want to see more disabled representation and I want to see characters who use canes and I want them to use them correctly and I want them to be just as fleshed out and interesting as their abled counterparts.
my cane user friend and I were talking abt sword canes just before I made the post so I tossed it in. I collect bladesāknives, daggers, swordsāand Iām also a disabled cane user who collects fancy canes. so I think combining the two is cool. I donāt even think theyād be good for self defense, I just think theyāre a fun thing to show off to friends!
but this post has always, first and foremost, been abt mobility aids. this is abt being a young cane user who doesnāt see rep. Iād love to see highschool dramas where a character uses a cane but itās not used to make u pity them, itās just a regular part of their life. I wanna see fantasy cane users where the animal head handle speaks. I wanna see sci-fi cane users and cane users in romances and cane users in main roles.
I know abt canne de combat and bartitsu and the other fighting styles u can use a cane for. thatās never been what this post is abt. I just want to see myself in media.
everyone who rbs this version gets a kiss on the forehead
everyone who rbs any version that makes my post entirely abt weapons while ignoring the mobility aid part owes me a kofi bc ik for sure thereās enough of yall for me to afford crutches

Now that Mysteries has been out for a few days I can share my favorite headcanon, which is that Lady Tremayne and Silas are old friends who meet each other every other Thursday for tea. They spend the hour passive aggressively sniping at each other about fashion, which they both find extremely fulfilling. Silas does trust her skills in an emergency, but as seen in Mysteries, is always a total prima donna about referring her services.
This is a wonderful addition and I wish we had seen more of it!!
The holy grail of searching through academic literature is coming across a string of publications that are like:
Hereās An Idea. Smith et al. 2016
Terrible Idea; a comment on Smith et al. 2016. Johnson 2016.
Youāre Wrong Too; a response to Johnson 2016. Nelson 2016.
Guys Just Stop Fighting, None Of Us Know Whatās Going On; a Review of the Current Literature. McBrien 2017.
Not even an exaggeration.
