a lot of writers want the illicit thrill of a problematic relationship without the “icky” part of having a relationship be “problematic”. a low-stakes example is infidelity — there’s the “fun” part of sneaking around and forbidden love and etc etc but people will often make the cheated-on partner a huge asshole or have them also be cheating instead of having the cheater face the fact that they’re hurting someone they professed to love and then lied to.

my unwoke thought. i dont think all genderbent characters should look exactly the same as their original. it takes a certain wisdom to know when their femininity or masculinity is key to their character regardless of gender, or when the behaviors/traits tied to their gender (or the opposite gender) being important to them is actually is what's at play here. though i do think more people should make genderbent characters look exactly the same if it means there's more muscular women. end post
