I think that people get very attached to parts of life, like food and sex, that are embodied and sensual and linked to sense memories. Over time, these things start to become synonymous with what it means To Be Human for them. And, to be fair, I don't really know if I could accurately pin down what it means To Be Human for me either, but it definitely wouldn't be, like...eating food...

Which I know is not the case for everyone! I am well aware that for many people food is tied to family and culture and ethnicity and childhood and joy and stuff. Which is why you get so mad when I don't eat your food! Because it means something to you! It is tied to your identity! But for me, the process of eating food is something I do for my own survival, full stop. It has no sentimental meaning. It is not typically enjoyable. It is fulfilling a bodily need, just like going to the bathroom. And, because I have ARFID, the experience of eating food becomes significantly more anxiety inducing when I'm in a public place, when there is pressure to eat placed upon me by other people or by the social setting, and especially when it's something I haven't eaten before. The amount of mental and emotional energy it takes for me to eat something that I'm unsure about is astronomical. And so, sometimes, I make the decision to refuse food in a social setting. This is my decision, about my own life and my own body! But it can make others confused or uncomfortable. It is not a personal attack! It has nothing to do with you!!

In a similar way, I think people are very sensitive about sex and sexuality, because again, it is linked to some nebulous idea about what Humanity Is and Does. You are supposed to act a certain way in social settings in certain contexts with certain end goals in mind. You are supposed to, eventually, find a partner and be having regular sex with them. Maybe you don't like sex now, but eventually you're gonna have to get on board, otherwise how will you live a normal life? This is the path you're supposed to take, and when we deviate from that, people get very uncomfortable, I guess because it threatens their worldview. Or sometimes it causes concern, just like if you never saw your friend eat and were concerned for their health. How can you stomach being alone, they wonder.

And yeah, loneliness sucks sometimes. So does waiting for the social event to be over before eating. But trust me, if I forced myself to eat in a situation I wasn't comfortable eating in, it would be much, much worse.

Just like with food, my sexuality and my reasons for not wanting to have sex are personal and have to do with my body and my experience and my tastes. It has nothing to do with you.

So, for allos--you don't need to prove that sex can be good if you just have it with the right person, or the right gender. Just like you don't have to convince me that I'm crazy for not liking your favourite food. As always, the message is that people can be different from you, and that doesn't mean that your way of living is any less or more valid.

Before the war, we lived a simple, peaceful life in Gaza. My wife and I were raising our six children—four boys, one girl, and our baby daughter who had not yet turned one. Our home was small, but it was full of laughter, warmth, and love. 🏡❤️
