A list of special interests

“It’s one of my distant likes. I still really like it when it comes up.”

And I just had to record it somewhere because I think it’s such a wise and simple way of expressing an important concept. Sometimes I feel like I’m neglecting an interest if I don’t do anything about it for a long period of time, like I can’t really say I like it if I don’t keep it up, but no, it’s just… it’s a distant like. That’s its own thing now.

It’s a music video with rapid flashing colours/lights. I have very minor epilepsy, just focal seizures, and I maybe watched ten seconds before literally nothing was real around me and I think I’m going to throw up and have a heart attack.

Yes, that would count as a special interest. While often not talked about, it is entirely possible to have a person as a special interest. It’s important when you have a special interest in a person that you are careful to respect their boundaries. It’s easy to cross lines when we have a special interest in a person so we must be very vigilant about ensuring that we do not behave in a way that is inappropriate towards that person. (I’m not trying to say that you did. It’s just something to be careful of).

Autistic people tend to have very intense emotional reactions. This can be even further intensified when we are interacting with our special interests. While I’m not sure how common your experience is, it’s definitely a possible autistic reaction. 

I’m sorry that people are reacting badly to you infodumping. That can be really hard to deal with, especially when it’s a subject you feel so passionately about. 

As a rule of thumb, it’s best not to interject into a conversation to infodump. If you are having a conversation with someone and the topic comes up, it’s usually ok to info dump, but jumping into a conversation you weren’t previously a part of in order to infodump is likely to be taken badly. If you’re uncertain if your contributions to the conversation will be appreciated, you can always try asking. You can say something like the following:

“Hey! I know a lot about [insert subject here] and I was wondering if I could tell you about it as it’s something I’m passionate about?”

If they respond positively, infodump to your hearts content. If they respond negatively, wait until another time to infodump. If you need to infodump to someone, I know that there are blogs on here dedicated to infodumping.
