people don’t understand elliott like we do i fear. i see so many people framing his character as creepy, rude, arrogant and a bad husband, WHICH HE ISN’T so that’s why I wanted to highlight some points surrounding elliott’s personality from his in game lines! (don’t take this too seriously these are just my takes and i just love to talk about my fuckass pixel husband from the fuckass farming game)
Despite passionate, Elliott is a struggling artist, very unsure about the future and the value of his creations:
“Sometimes I wonder if I might have a self inflated image and no real skills.”
“I write in hopes of connecting with others through time and space. *sigh*...times are changing, though. People don't read anymore.”
At the same time, he’s a lonely person, more than he really lets on at first. Leah and Willy seem to be the only people that are close to him, and he seemingly struggles to make connections, as much as he yearns for them:
“It's a little lonely out here on the beach... so I apologize if I was ever a little too forward with you when we first met. I was just eager to have a friend. It feels good to have a close friend like you.”
“Sorry, I'm feeling morose today. I wish there was more certainty about the future. I don't want to grow old as a lonely hermit on this beach...”
He has quite a few lines being grateful/ somewhat shocked that farmer goes out of their way just to seek him out, make conversation, is interested im what he has to say, etc. He desperately wants someone to see him as he is, and actually decide that they like what they see, want him close for all he is, even if some people deem him to be a little weird. In a way, he just moved into pelican town, with no idea if his life would work out just based on his effort and love for his profession. Think about it, he’s an artist, going through a big change, with no one to support him. It matters a lot that there’s someone that actually seems to like him enough to keep visiting and caring for him, even when himself doesn’t see the exact reason:
“I know that I am kind of an 'oddball'. I hope you don't mind.”
“You've come to visit me in the cold? I could do with a respite from my lonely labors.”
“Visit my cabin whenever you like. I could use the company.”
“A gentle little sunbeam woke me up this morning. I've never felt so refreshed. I'm sorry if that isn't very interesting to you.”
Also, it’s important to him to have at least one person out there that believes in his art, which, to an artist, is something so special and inspiring in moments you have little faith in your own creations:
“[Player], I know you have faith in my abilities as a writer. That means a lot to me.”
He’s sensitive, and not afraid to be meticulous about his appearance, which also may seem odd to other people, but then there’s farmer who’s willing to appreciate that:
“I have to brush my hair daily, or else it'll clump up into messy knots. It's a lot of work. I'm surprised I haven't just shaved it off in a fit of passion. I suppose I am too vain.”
I personally find it beautiful that he finds inspiration within the farmer. Some people claim he only sees you as that: a solution to his problems, but I disagree! It’s one of the most beautiful things to become an artist’s muse. Farmer isn’t just a means to an end, they’re one of the few people that reach out to him and are interested in building this connection that he yearns for, and therefore, someone Elliott loves gets inspiration from, wants to create when around them. Farmer lifts him up, so it’s most fair if he does the same. Grateful from being given such a gift, he always makes sure farmer is as appreciated as he is, too:
“I've been keeping a journal ever since we moved in together. Now that I actually have a life, I have lots to write about. I want to make sure I always remember these years.”
“[Player], when you're around... I feel unusually creative. I know... strange, but it's true.”
“My dear, I require nothing at all on this day... you are already the greatest gift a man could hope for.
As much as his own job matters to him, he’s interested in learning about farmer’s job and lifestyle too, love makes you want to know that person and everything that makes them, them. He is also always aware of their wellbeing making sure they’re not pushing too hard.
“I never had much success growing plants in my old beach house. Hopefully I can pick up a thing or two by watching you. In this respect, you are the master and I only a humble apprentice.”
“Come here, let me massage your back. You look tense.”
Also, his reaction to farmer giving him the bouquet is so cute:
“I only wish I had given you a bouquet first!”
He always talks about how he feels so much better after marriage. He’s finally certain about something in life, that he loves someone, that he has found a soul out there that resonates with his, and knows him completely, that his art matters, that his life is working out:
“I came to the valley to find the ivory tower from which my talents could reign supreme. But what I really found was a dungeon of loneliness. You saved me from that.”
And at last, a little detail that i don’t think most people really think anything of it but I find adorable is that he changes his poems and the way he compliments the player depending on their gender presentation, but the sentiment stays the same, making each feel appreciated in their own special way. It feels thoughtful to me:
“From the brightest winter star, to a fragrant fairy rose... nothing can compare with your captivating beauty.” / “From the brightest winter star, to the shimmer of an iridium vein... nothing can compare to my wonderful man.”
“Wow, you look really handsome today! Did you shave? Your jawline is perfect.” / “Your feminine allure is irresistible today. I can't keep my eyes off you.”
Some notes is that I see a lot of complaints about the boat scene. I personally never understood why people hate it so passionately? I get that it might feel uncomfortable for some people, but you only get the ten heart event if you two are already dating (you can also deny to get on the boat if uncomfortable), and from the situation it’s easy to assume he planned a little romantic outing. He kisses the player a bit impulsively, sure, but considering you two ARE DATING and the moment called for it, I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration to claim he’s forcing the player, we see a lot of impulsive kisses in romantic scenes in media and I don’t really see people complain about it, anyways. Again, you can disagree on this but to my interpretation player just “trembles” from being a bit shocked in a good way (could also be an animation choice to show excitement, its pixels guys). I take the losing friendship with him if you say you’re uncomfortable thing not as him being obnoxious, just ashamed he read the room wrong and made a decision that made you uncomfortable. As he should, he apologizes for it.
He’s just a guy!!! A deeply lonely artist that is a hopeless romantic at heart, searching for someone who truly understands. He dedicates his book to you. He has a secret book of poems about you. He greets you with the softest of words, always, aware of everything you do and making sure you rest. He might be peculiar, but it’s just the way he is, a little awkward, but when he finds someone that he loves and loves him back, he does everything in his power to make them feel appreciated.
(Also it baffles me seeing people call him a cheater just because…he’s one of the only marriage candidates who doesn’t give up on his dream which is being a writer? “oh he leaves farmer blah blah blah” why would keeping his individuality be a bad thing? And even at book tour HE’S ALWAYS THINKING OF YOU, enough to write A FEW letters about what he’s doing and how he misses being at the farm is very eager to come back to his beloved. Even while living his dream, he knows his heart is also with farm, with you. I’m sorry he has a healthy relationship with farmer where he gets to pursue his dream career and be his own person outside of a relationship I don’t know what to tell you.)
I have always seen Elliott as a character who has previously struggled w/ his personal relationships, as well as the general unhappiness of constantly feeling like he's in the wrong place. Which is somewhat confirmed by his 2 heart dialogue.
He chased his idylic dream of small town community and a small writing shack where masterpieces were written. But what he found is reality, where the locals can be pretty rude and standoffish if you weren't born in Pelican Town. Where the shack is falling apart and has sand and crabs all over.
This man is absolutely desperate for human connection (part of why he writes), and is super invested in his relationship with the farmer. I'd go so far to say that his heart scenes are more farmer centered then any of the other candidates. He want conversation and companionship, which is why he's one of the only friendly characters to you from the beginning. He wants to have a relationship worthy of romantic era poetry.
He prioritizes building a life and experiencing deep connection. He's the one of the only candidates where it makes sense that he would get married and move to the farm, both because it doesn't conflict or hinder his dreams in any way, and because it feels like he would be actively persuing a long term relationship. Most of the others have dreams would take them away from Pelican Town, or feel like they don't really care about the farmer specifically but rather that it was the right place at the right time.

Using Instagram slides here so k don't have to type it all out again but could someone help me with this? Maybe I'm just being too OCD but it's giving me a lot of anxiety. And of course the law is different for each country but still
I know that stock images exist but you often cannot find ones that have the specific poses you need, plus ive already made a lot of art using Pinterest references so I'm scared.
I want to know if images like what I'm describing would count as transformative (aside from the fact that Founder Ymir's design is isayama's) and if they'd count as transformative. Because what really scares me is I always use art references for anatomy and stuff when designing characters or doing concept art, and those reference images are pictures of anatomy from the Internet or from textbooks. It's not always possible to take my own photos of some things (like objects I don't own or internal parts of human anatomy). And what about for drawing certain facial features? And with writing ... What about doing research? Do you have to credit every source? Is the work not really mine? I have moral/contamination OCD so this kind of thing terrified me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
As far as I am aware (and I did a BA in studio art, so that may also be relevant here) there is nothing illegal about it--especially when you aren't copying it and just using it as a loose guide. I've also had conversations w/ a gallery owner who talked about keeping the hyper realism in her gallery to a minimum because a real good photo would be in a magazine and all the hyper realistic artists would all use the same image as their reference. Additionally, you're probably aware that there are several parody/satire or even fan works that are completely legal despite heavy inspiration usage in the pieces, even without credit in the acknowledgements.
However, I also have OCD and totally understand the anxiety something like this can have, so if you're particularly nervous you can do something similar to a bibliography document w/ links to where you found the references and who they are by and insert the link to that in text under the post.
Hey, thank you so much for your advice and for understanding/not being patronizing about having OCD. It's always a risk to share something like this, even when advice is really needed, so I highly appreciate it ❤️
Np! This topic is very nuanced in media because if I wrote an art history paper I would need to cite everything, even if I was just checking for a similarity... but I wouldn't need to do the same for something I painted in class. Some of my classes had us submit our references though, to proove we were using them since they were considered so fundamental to our progress.
I will say though, there are people who will claim that using reference is a failing or copying, and while that can be personal opinion--it is professionally and academically not considered true, at least from the professionals I know. Master copies are also something that you can look into, since they are a tool used historically and contemporarily, but are also displayed in museum collections with the understanding that they aren't forgeries but are art on their own.

I wonder if people in the fallout universe are still using 200 year old tampons or if some crazy chemist named fuckass atomic Becky or whatever has figured out how to mass manufacture them
You... you are kidding right? You really think that in the tens of thousands (conservative estimate) of years of people wearing clothes (for the longest time an extremely valuable item) they never figured out anything better than rags or bleeding into their (sometimes irreplacable) clothing, or that literally everyone was constantly malnourished up until a hundret years ago?
This is a joke right?
I'm pretty sure people were smart enough to manufacture something disposable out of dried plant materials to solve an issue half of humanity has had for much of their lives. Ancient people figured out contraception through inserting vinegar soaked sponges, I'm pretty sure they had better solutions for menstruation than just going "Eh, whatever."
We also know from archeological evidence that the majority of people in most times where not malnutritioned. This should also be obvious by how we don't see constant malnutrition in other animal either, it is simply because malnutritioned individuals tend to die through injury or illness much more often, which means that a population of mostly manutrinioned individuals is bound to collapse.
This post thread has shown me several things about current public knowledge I though was more common then it was.
1. It's super easy to find living historians doing the research and method testing about what women were doing about their periods all over the world in different regions and time periods. They're often on Youtube and have sources in the description.
2. It hasn't been uncommon when discussing the devils sacrament hear, "yeah, I missed my period for a few months because life was stressful." I've heard this at least once everytime it's brought up, and I talk about periods more often then is standard.
3. Also not uncommon to hear about it stopping if you are familliar with people (or personally) who struggle with dissordered eating. Or in some cases just from doing too much sports. Also quite common to hear about in my experience.
4. Variety is key with period products. Some people feel pain from menstral cup/disks or tampons. Some people just free bleed. Some need a combination because of flow. This is how it is like even now.
5. This is more based on the 50s aesthetic of Fallout, but also remember that tampons are a fairly recent thing society wise. There are still a lot of communities who don't trust them because of the much higher risk of TSS they used to posses (which is not something I'm going into farther)
if I worked at a sports bar, I’d keep turning the channel to competitive fishing coverage and all the patrons would be like “what the fuck is this shit? hello? football? basketball? baseball? fucking hockey? change the fucking channel” and I’d be like “actually, they’ve banned all sports except for competitive angling and women’s golf and I hate golf”

I understand the excitement of hearing Grian being open and suggesting a collab w/ The Crane Wives--
But I also really need more people to manage their expectations around it. Like, super cool, would love for something to happen. However, this fandom can be kinda rabid and I feel it needs to be said that nothing is official, Grian just said he messaged them. They are not obligated to respond or do anything. We are not entitled to it because it sounds cool.
Again, would love for something to happen, but seeing so many people act like it's a done deal is concerning to me if that doesn't happen. Please, be excited, but manage your expectations about it.
weird hot take i have about stardew valley: elliott is not a "pretty boy" (he's pretty but not like, a cutesy little anime guy ... he's probably in his late 20s/30s ugh) but he's also not hyper masculine chad faced but with a wig. Like ugh.
Also (again you can view him however you want BUT) he's NOT AN OLD MAN!! "older bachelor" just means older than the others, like I'm pretty sure most of the others around the age of a recent college grad given how Sebastian talks about college. Of course that's still a headcanon and I think there's purposely a huge age range that all the bachelorettes and bachelors can be, but it's still personally annoying to me lol.
I know Maru and Abbi have dialogues where it's implied that they're still in school. Sam is probably the same age as well since those three all do the egg hunt... which you do w/ Jas and Vincent (that's a whole confusing topic, imo). I'd also pin Harvey as the oldest simply because he has gone through med school and residency already.
We also need to remember that CA is currently 38. SDV started being developed in 2011. So he would have been 23 at the beginning, so what a 23 yo considers an old bachelor can be very different then what actually is old. We also have Pierre, Gus, and Kent as better examples of what middle aged looks like in the SDV style... which I don't really see in any of the Elliott portraits, tbh.
I wish people would tap into Elliott's weirdo energy more. Like the fics are always him being all posh romantic poet sort of vibe. That man is a loser with fancy words. That man lives in a shack that takes away half his workout regimen just in up keep. He moved for the romantic beach aesthetic and now he's stuck scrubbing algae off the floor boards and shooing spiders out of the rafters. He is stuck with sand in his shoes and crabs in his pockets everyday. He wants to be the posh romantic poet, he tries so hard. but he is at his baseline, a little silly guy with mental illness. PLEASE GIVE ME MY GOOFY TRY HARD DORK MAN I BEG🙏 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE -
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Hippie church moms donating quinoa chips to my local food bank have done more for me materially than any internet idealist ever has.
People get pissed at me for being a pragmatist in my political ideals but I’ve been in the position where I was out of food right now.
And who helped me with that? Not people calling for some nebulous revolution. Not people telling me that the system was useless. Not people preaching at me to grow my own food. It was a church food bank partially funded by the state of Texas that some southern hippies donated a bunch of Whole Foods nonsense to.
And you know what? I’m sick and tired of defeatism. What can we get done right now, huh? Are you gonna accept something a bit better to help people right now or are you waiting for your perfect utopia to come to you?
Yeah, UBI is better than the quinoa chips. Sure. But right now the quinoa chips are stopping people from going hungry and if all we can do is get the food bank quinoa chips to more people, then I say so be it. That’s something. I’ll almost always take baby steps over nothing.
People don't seem to understand that by supporting these systems now, they have the ability to grow into other systems like UBI over time.
I think this applies a lot to the Green Brothers and the MCoE. About the people telling them to save longer to be able to give more, which sounds great in theory. Instead they decided to fund it with money they had then, while continuing to make more money through donations and things like their shop. It's been saving lives since it was in the planning phase. Because they chose now and to work with inperfection, they've saved over 500 babies and mothers since it officially opened earlier this year.
If we started to apply more towards what's saving people now, instead of postulating about what could be better in the future, we would already have the infrastructure built for what comes next.

Talk therapy would feel more effective for my crippling self esteem if I didn't need to pay someone to validate me in my endeavor to not believe that everyone secretly/not-so-secretly hates me.
Like, obviously that's not true--stastically speaking--, but paying someone to tell me that doesn't really help.
Sometimes I think we learn how a small percent of very rich women lived in the past as the default for all women of the time and conclude that there can't be a valid reason why is was so, along with the misogyny of the time.
I really wanna know how character views have changed for other long time SDV players. I've been playing for about 9 years atp, and while my ride-or-die spouse has always been Elliott, my views on the other marriage candidates have changed a lot.
I started playing the game around the same age as the majority of the candidates are, so it was relateable how they would talk about being about to go to school or saving up or choosing not to all together. But now that I'm in my late 20s, I can't read the dialogue about it and see anything other then someone way too young for me to be interested in.
I think Maru suffers the most from this since she is definitely supposed to go to uni, so it's like she's forever stuck in the summer between hs graduation and her first uni semester. I generally think that applies to Abbi as well, and Alex too, with his pro Gridball dreams. It just makes them feel way too young for me to want to interact with them a lot--if that makes sense.
Even if we interpret the loose age of the farmer--probably around the mid 20s simply based on their burnout from a corpo job + probable solo life in the city--there are a few candidates that just have always felt too young for the farmer and are just there for the teen players (which I have no issues with).
Has anyone else had their views on the candidates change like that just because they got older?
Hestia has recently taken up the refined hobby of tea drinking. I do not want her drinking tea for all the obvious reasons.
But I was adding some leaves to my cold brew and she was so excited thinking she was getting tea... which dissapointed her when she recieved none.
Does anyone else have a cat who wants to drink their tea? None of my other cats have been interested in anything other then water and milk--but Hestia also demands ice water daily which is a bit odd as well.
I'm never more certain of my aro-ace identity then when facing something I know most allo people would be absolutely drooling over.
Walked past two young twenty-somethings working on a jetski yesterday. They were both shirtless, six pack fit, short shorts, tanned, and glistening in the sun.
I almost died from keeping my face straight as I passed because, come on, it was like walking past those weird fanservice montages in person. What are the odds?
This has been a somewhat consistent reaction to masc and fem people too, so it always affirms my identity as aro-ace whenever something like that does happen, lol.
