Drabbles or starters!

so i keep hearing people talk about tumblr getting them down and taking time away being good for them and i just want to put out a reminder:

you are responsible for your own experience here. this community can be toxic or healing, draining or fulfilling. that’s because it’s full of people, and it’s in the nature of people to run the gamut between abusive fuckery and loving kindness and compassion. 

in my time here i’ve grown more and more selective about who i play with and who i chill with ooc. i’ve learned what behaviours in other people make me feel shitty and when i see those behaviours in someone i’m invested in, i talk to them about it. if i’m not invested, i distance myself. if i try to talk about it and the other person makes me regret trying to communicate, i dip.

you don’t have to follow everyone. you can blacklist the urls of your friends’ friends. you don’t have to participate in servers. you don’t have to interact with doubles. you can only roleplay with six people if those six people are the only people who make you feel safe. you can put it in your rules that you may drop threads and asks for any reason or no reason. 

it saddens me to see people leave tumblr because of bad experiences. it frustrates me to see people i care about talk about tumblr being toxic for them as though it’s something you can’t control, as though you have no agency in the matter.

you have agency. you of all people have agency over your own actions and control over your experience. you have the right to assert and defend your boundaries and you don’t owe anyone else anything except the respectful communication of those boundaries.

there will absolutely be people who judge you for this. some people in this community feel that others owe it to them to interact, or become angry when events are closed, or otherwise feel entitled to your time and energy. 

fuck those people. be thankful when they show their asses so you don’t have to waste further investment on them.

the people who will ultimately make your experience here a positive one for you will show you understanding and compassion. they will communicate with you. they will not make you regret trying to communicate with them. they will not think less of you for being selective, for dipping from servers, for not being palsy-walsy with all of their friends. they will wait for you.

(and conversely, the best way to have a friend like that is to be a friend like that.)
