Had the opportunity to talk with the author of the script, which has yielded some interesting details.

1. Rhaast confirmed. / Kayn being extremely cautious with him and when to ‘use him’, as opposed to the ‘canon gameplay’. Keep in mind these events are set previously to the corrupted Kayn we see feeding in our jungles.

2. My favourite detail: 

Yanléi is the actual name of Zed’s order. It means “The Tears” as in the Shadow’s Tears. Also known as "The Tear's of the Shadow." The shadow’s tears are a magical ichor which gives Zed and his followers the ability to use shadow magic— (when tattooed or ingested) We will be learning more about this.
