Going to take a moment and be vulnerable:

This is my body. I want to lose weight. I have signed up for a gym and am using Noom. I want to get to 180lbs, and then maybe 160lbs after depending on how I feel.

I do not know how to make gym days for specific body parts. I also have trouble with my appetite where having healthy habits are hard to keep without just limiting myself to eating only once per day. I have a hard time staying motivated, and find myself impatient that I am not making the progress I want.

If anyone wanted to give me healthy advice on how to get into going to to the gym and working out what I want to on a regular basis, how to develop better eating habits, how to stay motivated as someone who struggles with things not being perfect, I would appreciate it immensely.

It’s been a year and 6-ish months since this post, and I will say: progress is a slow process but can be rewarding. One of the biggest things to change was my mental health and having a PCP who listened to my symptoms. I have been on an antidepressant for a year now that helps with my depressive symptoms but also helps me understand my actual hunger cues. One of the other changes was that I started being more physically active and getting out to find what worked for me, which mostly turned out to be walking with other people, as well as joining queer kickball/dodgeball/volleyball groups.

The old lady is not in her home. She is at work. She's meant to be what in Italian is called "la portinaia", aka a cross between a doorwoman and cleaner of a residential building. She's in her small "office" space, at the entrance of the building, from where she can survey the coming and goings of the inhabitants. It's a job that has mostly disappeared, but is culturally very clear to us as having the connotation of "potentially gossipy, one-million-percent judgmental woman who sees everything that goes on in the apartment complex, knows everyone and their secrets, and has Strong Opinions™️".
