every movie version of Phantom of the Opera kicks ass. They’re all different too, it’s like a choose what flavor of theater-based horror you want to have and there’s a Phantom of the Opera for that.
And then Andrew Lloyd Webber comes along, fuses them all together with none of the unique interesting aspects they all had, adds some disturbing romance, gives the Phantom literal wizard powers & we all just let him get away with it because the music was good
We let him get away with whatever hellscape the creeptastic cringe fest of a sequel he wrote was. He has answered for none of his crimes.
Then whoever made the 2004 movie was like “how can we make this even worse” and cast fuckin Gerard Butler as the Phantom
Unbelievable.
Look at this. Look. How dare we be deprived of “acid scarred composer rises from Paris sewers”, which we probably could’ve totally had a musical theater rendition of, if someone would just let Terrance Zdunich go feral with a large budget
