the people who died were an ethnic Kazakh couple in a small Mongolian town. they didn’t eat a dead rat, they ate raw organs from a marmot they had hunted.

the plague is an endemic disease in Mongolia, spread largely through contact with marmots (largely as a result of their fleas). unfortunately, due to a lack of information, some people in Mongolia subscribe to the folk belief that eating raw marmot will lead to good health.

this couple contracted the disease–which is very treatable with antibiotics–but did not receive adequate care in time and, as a result, suffered horrifically before dying. they left behind four children, ranging in age from 14-years-old to 9 months. they did not deserve to die.

The reactions of certain segments of the fandom to the Homestuck epilogues are pretty wild coming at it from the perspective of someone who didn’t get around to finishing the comic until a couple of years after it ended and had relatively little contact with fan-created media in the intervening span, in that I… just kind of don’t see the rampant OOCness that a lot of folks are talking about.

A few small quibbles notwithstanding, from where I’m standing, the way everybody’s depicted in the epilogues looks pretty consistent with how they’re depicted in the comic proper. In fact, many of the specific examples folks are citing of “OOC” writing seem totally off the wall to me – like, they’re saying the character X is wrong because they lack traits Y and Z, but not only are traits Y and Z evidenced nowhere in the text of the comic, in a lot of cases you’d have to wilfully read against the text of the comic in order to arrive at them.

I’m sure there are plenty of legitimate criticisms to be had, so I’m not going to dismiss all of the reactions as folks being honked off that the epilogues have declined to validate three years of accumulated fanon, but I can’t help but suspect that at least a significant portion of the ruckus boils down to that.
