PROJEKT Funball epilogue fic is now posted on AO3! This one-shot had a lot of emotional ramifications that the live show didn't have time to touch on, so my brain pushed this out at light speed :)

Really enjoyed "The Fall Will Kill You" revealing Essek is indeed a total dweeb with so so many mental health issues and the emotional processing ability of a half drowned cat.
But honestly the thing that struck me the most was it kinda confirmed my long held suspicion that Essek and Jester have waaay more in common than a surface level read would make you think.
@spocktheestallion sorry peer reviewing your tags because yes I think you hit the nail on its head.
Because I feel like both Jester and Essek's immaturity stems in many ways from their relationship to their mums. But for Jester its more like she wanted to leave the nest and grow as an adult, but worried about leaving her mother alone, so it took a little encouragement to get out the door.
However in Esseks case, it was more like "Oh I'm so such a prodigy I don't have time for all this childish nonsense. I'm going to impress my family with how smart and mature I am and I'm going to take on sole responsibility for saving my mum!". Which essentially meant Essek didn't get any of the peer to peer socialisation he needed to actually develop an adult identity separate from his family.
I also think thats why Jester grew so rapidly, while Essek stagnated for years on end. Jester was out there busting her gut to forge the peer to peer relationships she needed to grow. Essek needed Jester to steamroll her way into his life just for him to even register that he was missing that connection with people his own [developmental] age.
SPOILERS for Mighty Nein: Stories Untold
The contrast between Essek’s internal monologue and his own processing of his thoughts, which is so rigid and intellectual vs what he is actually doing physically, (shaking a like a purse dog, hyperventilating and pacing obsessively) is so brilliant. He passively acknowledges what his body is doing, but he doesn’t process it, he just notes what’s occurring and moves on with his research and reflection and theorizing and planning so fast YOU almost don’t note it. You almost don’t realize how unreliable his narration is until you take the facts as he reports them and start painting a physical picture of the scene. He’s so in denial about everything, his reality is so detached from his perception and that’s reflected by the incongruity between his mindset and his physical state.
It also perfectly shows how the Shadowhand persona is just that — a carefully crafted personality that he wears like a mask, but is completely disconnected from his actual feelings. After reading this chapter I’m reminded of Matt calling Essek a “delightfully complicated character.”
He flagellates himself for betraying Adeen and two paragraphs later justifies his actions. Dani Carr did an absolutely FANTASTIC job with this character study and there’s honestly no one else I’d trust to write Essek in this format but her. What a delight :)
My main takeaway from this if anything is that Dani Carr is a BRILLIANT writer, and also that Essek really shines in this format. He is a very closed off and avoidant character by design and Matt has done a phenomenal job as an actor and storyteller making a character with those traits work in a live setting where much of his interiority has to be implicitly conveyed through subtext and absence. But being able to explicitly hear his perspectives…. It’s so good it’s so fucking GOOD I feel like we’re finally getting to really know him. I want to crawl inside his brain and chew on his neurons he’s so fascinating

essek(s)
they saw you across the happy fun ball and neither likes your vibe
Every so often I come across a new Mighty Nein fan in the wild that has been mildly spoiled regarding the whole "Essek redemption arc" thing and it's always fun to see because you just *know* all they are expecting some fairy standard "power of friendship" scenario....
...But the truth is that nothing can truly prepare anyone for just how Freak4Freak the Mighty Nein/Essek were for eachother in the campaign. Like seriously these people were incapable of acting normally around anyone; thankfully it turns out the best way to win over a weird antisocial loner who is secretly trying to kill you, is just to be total freaks about the whole situation. Weird little evil freaks cannot resist the magnetic pull of a full freak friend group!
Comments have correctly pointed out that Caleb and Essek matched each other’s freak from the moment they met. The most intense, heavy-handed flirting comes in the first few episodes where they interact. Essek lays it on thick teaching dunamancy in a seductive voice, and Caleb metaphorically and literally pulled a door open with a sneaky cat’s claw (that somehow impressed or intrigued a master dunamancer).
I could speak at length about how their relationship is a strange one where the tension is front-loaded rather than back-loaded, where they settle into an easy domesticity. I like to think that Caleb saying, “took us some time to get there” (he and Essek getting together) more so meant that he and Essek needed to create stable lives before they could, quite simply, begin what they were already feeling. Unlike most pairings, I don’t see many tropey Shadowgast fics about grand love confessions — which is both an interesting change of a pace and a frustrating change to my dining pallet
Regardless, I love how much their stories align, and it’s very clear from the early animated series episodes that they’re going to continue that foil even more :)
“Why did the bright queen believe essek so easily how did he get away with so much shit before he was caught?” Buddy you would not believe what you can get away with if you’re Quiet and Get Good Grades

Briefly misplaced my beacon prop while in Essek cosplay over the weekend and there is something really funny to me about Essek running around the con just. frantically going up to people and being like. "Have you seen a beacon anywhere??" Immersive cosplay experience
Did Daniel Sloss know he was tapping right into CR sexybrain right to the nethers effect when he said "Jessie..." in a gravel pirate voice like that?
Cause I thought he was cute before this, but damn. DAMN. Hello sir. You look very good as a Scottish pirate king. You SOUND very good as a Scottish pirate king. You should play him in the show.
Thanks for the 800 bsky followers🌟
Here's the shadowgast half of what was promised.
im late to the party but essek and caleb in their projekt funball fits!!
God i forgot how Essek talks about dunamancy in episode 77, and how Caleb replies. "Perhaps do you enjoy the idea of drawing the potential from discarded timelines? 😏" "That is intriguing. How do you mean?😏" "let me show you 😏" Literally (spiritually, intellectually) careless whisper is playing in the background. What's sexier than wizards nothing.
Shadowgast is hornier in episode 77 than episodes after they actually get together. Real shit.
