Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THATāS what causes consumption, theyād be like āah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guestsā
But if you told a Medieval person this they would probably go "Ah, so when the miasma settles on surfaces it gains evil life. I understand."
Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.
boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.
what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away. how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.
and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.
what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.

the Hall of Mercy information + the Vaelus/Hannan conversation definitely moved some shaper information into place for sure
It was already known that the shapers didn't create the mortal races of AramƔn, they simply shaped them. which means the different races (or maybe even some shared ancestor of them) existed 4500 years ago.
The elves have some connection to the realm of Faerie, possibly predating Sylandri marrying the king. But everyone else, all the mortals, are of the world. There were already established human families that had pacts with the Fae or elementals or had interbred with dragons and giants.
The world was such that they had well established Druidic traditions & religious rites. They also probably had written tradition, because we know precisely when the Shapers came and for how long they reigned on AramƔn.
So the Shapers (extraplanar beings? unconfirmed but seems likely) arrive on AramƔn 4500+ years ago. They take powerful primordials as spouses and dispose of them, and they exert control over races of AramƔn.
The equivalent for our world would be that they arrived during the Bronze Age, which was marked the advent of written language and the formation of early governments and city states. Obviously impossible to say if their world was in a similar period of expansion pre-Shaper, but just to give you an idea of just how long ago 4500 years is in the scale of a world. The last Woolly mammoth died around 4000 years ago.
Sylandri gave the elves immortality but took their bodily autonomy.
I would speculate that all of the Shapers (except Azgra) offered the different races boons in exchange for devotion. The Hall of Mercy says non-Shaped beings that are "devout" enough can plead their case for a Shaper afterlife, so devotion does seem to be part of it.
Azgra, ever honest and also terrible, probably did not promise the Orcs anything & simply exerted dominance and that was that. But every other Shaper? Perhaps they did something akin to Sylandri and they all exacted a price for those gifts. (Tansul explicitly called for human sacrifice to create at least one of his constructs, so maybe all of his celestials were created that way)
So they shaped a rigidly separated world where they each reigned over an semi-isolated population that was possibly indebted to them for the growth and expansion of their societies/magical abilities and used them as toy soldiers in petty fights with their siblings.
Of all the nods they could have made to the comics, I'm so glad it was this one š

farcille isn't "toxic yuri." nothing remotely toxic about them, they both treat each other with a great deal of care and affection and respect. just because marcille is willing to do forbidden necromancy and arguably cannibalism for her wife doesn't make her toxic that's just what you do for a woman with broad shoulders

I'll never get over how wonderful Thaisha is as a druid. She embodies it so perfectly, every part of her. She is kind and loving and offers help and a home to those who need it, and she also does not hesitate to act, to fight, to shout. When Wick snaps (deservedly), she snaps back but she also tells him that it was good for him to do that and that he shouldn't apologise. She just makes me think of all the destructive, unpredictable powers of nature so perfectly coupled with all of its comforts and beauty.
Tumblr is the reason why I have something I call the cashier test which is, if i told this to a random cashier at the grocery store, would they think you're crazy at best or at worst would they be warranted in leaping over the counter and beating the shit out of you. Karl Marx mpreg is crazy, but not beating the shit out of you crazy. The cashier will probably talk about you to their coworkers and it might even make their day. Telling someone they're complicit in their own oppression by working a minimum wage job at a grocery store makes them warranted in leaping over the counter to beat the shit out of you.
Now in handy infographic form for Tumblr users:
āautism wouldnāt have been difficult before capitalismā ānothing that caused me burnout existed before industrializationā well what if your boots feel weird against your skin. and your cape is itchy and too heavy. and your brooch keeps making an annoying sound everytime you move and this party is too loud and youāre hungry and thereās pigeon stew but you canāt stand the texture of pigeon so you ate some olives and now your hands feel oily and gross and you drank a little bit too much wine (bc thereās no clear water. also it was too bitter) so now your head hurts and you feel a little hot but not hot enough to take your cape off and you promised this time we leave when I asked, Aurelius! you promised! and donāt forget we still have a three hour ride back home you promised itās not going to be like last time! or something of the sort.
the āLife only started sucking in the 19th centuryā attitude as anti-capitalist praxis is truly hilarious like. personally, if the sun was even a tiny little bit too hot on the back of my neck while i was being kidnapped and taken as a war captive after *insert empire here* conquered my home i wouldve been pissed. praefectus if the shackles feel weird on my skin im killing us both

Bureaucracy is good and important, actually.
Except for the spelling of the word "bureaucracy"
honestly the talk vaelus had with hannan not only made her motivation for continuing to be with the group click a lot more for me than before. but it recontextualized her bond with thaisha as well. thaisha who has such steady and strong convictions of her beliefs, and recently gone against her circle's rule (by not letting occtis go through the path) because she listened to her instincts. who now delayed a hearing with her circle (the letter) and chose what she believes is best and more important for the greater good. we have vaelus who has already pre campaign having doubts about her own faith and struggling in stasis, meets this woman who while staying true to her core beliefs forges her own path forward. only a conversation with hannan could've brought that out of her but i'm so curious now to see where that goes.
