If you think about it, Gwayne is likely never going to get over Criston. He is never going to have closure because he has no place to actually put those feelings. He's not allowed to grieve either, Ormund cruelly mocks him for it and Daeron, despite expressing sympathies, is never going to understand. There's also the added fact that Gwayne will always have that what if. Because as much as we joke about Criston being a major fumbler, it's Gwayne who fumbled this time because the moment he said "service", any interest that Criston had in his offer went right out the window. And I think Gwayne knows that was where he messed up, especially after their final conversation.
