It’s worth noting many of JFK’s health issues started after he developed scarlet fever, a common childhood illness that often left victims with damage to their kidneys, heart, joints and brain and sometimes triggered arthritis. There is no vaccine against it but RFK jr is trying to undermine the vaccination schedules for other common childhood illnesses that can cause permanent lifelong damage to a child’s health.

“I don’t understand. How does this refute what RFK jr. said?” Because many of JFK’s ailments may have been preventable/treatable with modern medicine. Because he needed amphetamines to function. Because the average life expectancy for men in 1960 was 66.6. People lived harder lives and died younger. Public health campaigns and infectious disease control and education helped immensely. People were not healthier during his uncle’s presidency because they did not have the tools and knowledge necessary to address many major public health concerns, we have them now and he is firing vaccine experts and literally swimming in shit creek. The average state of health in the 1960s was not better than it is today.

Many do not know about the state of JFK’s health because it was taboo. Because disability and ill health were things that were spoken of in hushed whispers. The Kennedys buried JFK’s health problems like they hid Rosemary after she was lobotomized. RFK jr wants to continue his rose-tinted view of a past constructed through blood and pain and ignorance. He is rewriting history in a way that is so obvious and so vile.

JFK went so hard against the ‘sickly kid becomes a disabled adult who doesn’t get laid’ stereotype that he was still cheating on his wife with a roster of women while his spine dissolved and he was on a dozen medications. If a man is a dog, he’ll continue being a dog even while he is the president of the United States and suffering from a number of serious and debilitating health conditions.

Being able to draw older people as attractive without reducing or erasing the visual signs of aging, and in fact showing that they're attractive because of those signs, is an artistic skill that should be valued so much more. Honestly, it should earn you an immediate fortune because holy fuck is it a rare commodity. There are so many artists who seem to think attractiveness and aging exist in opposition to each other, so they smooth every wrinkle, erase every crease, and de-age the character until they're basically thirty with silver hair. But when an artist can look at crow's feet, smile lines, weathered skin, deep-set wrinkles, and all the little traces of a life well lived and say, "No, that's what makes them beautiful," that's a level of artistic observation and care I wish we celebrated more often.
