Thoughts about Sherlock Holmes, having now listened to several of the audiobooks of the original series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
First and foremost, Sherlock is actually nice? Like, he is never deliberately rude to people. He can be quite blunt, direct and to the point, but he's never going out of his way to be rude or dismissive of people. (He has immense amounts of cheek and sass about the competencies of the police officers once they are no longer present, but he is always perfectly polite to them when they are speaking.)
He is especially kind to people in the cases that they are working on. He tries to be respectful of people, particularly those who have been traumatized by the event that they have just experienced. He is very kind to women, and has great admiration for smart and competent women that he encounters in his work, regardless of their social class. (In the adventure of the copper beeches, he allows the woman to take a suspicious job, because she is in desperate need of the money, but makes sure that he is available to her night or day in case she runs into any trouble.)
Sherlock genuinely likes John. They are actually best friends, and Sherlock treats him as such. Sherlock is proud of John when John figures things out and offers him sincere praise. Sherlock genuinely enjoys John's company and makes a point to express that fact on multiple occasions.
The cases are often simple, but never stupid. The cases are interesting to read, and it's satisfying as a reader when you figure something out alongside the characters but before the big reveal. They're not trying to twist you in knots, tricking you into thinking that your first thought is going to be absolutely wrong because it's way too obvious. The stories make sense, but are layered with more complexity and clues that you might not have caught.
Sherlock does a lot of moral questioning and struggles with some of the implications of the cases, such as the adventure of the Abbey Grange. In that case, a young woman's admirer murders the woman's abusive husband. Sherlock makes a point of not telling the police about it because he thinks that that would be the wrong thing to do. He lets the man go and encourages him and the young woman to make a better life for themselves. Sherlock quite openly struggles with the results of his cases, the implications of them, their impact on him and the people around him.
Sherlock openly admits to his faults. And not in an âoh I'm so much better than you all but I have to keep my mind occupied somehowâ kind of way, he is quite willing to admit where he struggles and where he considers himself to be weaker, and often asks for help.
John Watson is very much an equal partner, and Sherlock is openly quite reliant on John for a lot of things. Obviously, Sherlock's detective abilities are the star of the show and that is what Watson focuses on in his recounting, but Sherlock actively seeks out John's involvement and opinions on the cases, and relies on John's protection and support on many occasions.
Anyways. I'm not entirely sure where the idea of âSherlock Holmes the genius assholeâ comes from but it's very distinctly NOT the impression I get from the original stories.
The way that most of Conan Doyleâs Sherlock Holmes storiesâ most horrible villains are rich dudes that are abusive to women, in a time such as the 1880âs, compels me.
Yup, thereâs a huge number of times where Sherlock Holmes is the ONLY person to take a young womanâs complaint or worry seriously and finds out someone is up to some serious evil. Holmes also shows a lot of compassion and empathy with the victims over and over again. (This is why I find âSecretly a womanâ or âTransâ Holmes headcanons much more convincing than âsociopathâ Holmes.)
I am never going to shut up about how much I specifically love The Adventure of The Copper Beeches because it is literally Sherlock Holmes listening to a young lady he does not know except as a potential client, agreeing with her that a potential job she has interviewed for that she thinks is SUPER SKETCHY is, indeed, sketchy as fuck and when she says sheâs probably gonna take the job anyways because the money is good and she needs it going âOKAY I GUESS but for the love of god please write to us so we know youâre okay we will literally drop everything and jump on a train if you want us toâ.
The job turns out to indeed be sketchy as fuck, she writes to them, Holmes and Watson drop everything and jump on a train when she asks them to. I read this story for the first time when I was twelve and it made a HUGE impression.
This is also the basis for a lot of speculation about Holmesâ family life. The idea that he has been a victim of abuse, or his mother was abused (or even murdered by his father.) Thereâs definitely SOMETHING that makes him very aware of how dangerous isolated families can be, and the dark things that can happen behind closed doors. Plus, of course, the motivation to devote himself to stopping crime. And yes, so much of it is of the personal type.Â
dude see this is one aspect of the original books i NEVER understand why modern remakes (cough cough) donât go all in on. Like, in the 21th c we HAVE all the dumb forensic shit that made Victorian Holmes stand out, but we STILL DONâT HAVE uhâŚ.you know, compassion for women and minorities, or the willingness to believe them, adequate community support for domestic violence or hate crimes, etc. etc. which youâd think is exactly where a renegade consulting detective would come in handy. A good modern day Sherlock Holmes remake, instead of trying to convince us that Holmes is some super genius for being better than fingerprint analysis or whatever, could have him just beâŚa good person who helps out people the police canât and wonât help. There you go. Thatâs how to write a relevant modern Holmes.
One thing that annoys me is how much the BBC version of Sherlock (and the fandom around it) focus on police cases or cold cases. In the stories, Holmesâ bread and butter cases had fuck-all to do with the police and in a few stories, he actively works around/against them, or outright lies to them. Of the many, many things I wish that show had done differently, this is one is particularly obnoxious since itâs such a gimme.
There were very few actual murder cases in the Canon, and Holmes handled them either one of two ways:
Option one: The murder victim was innocent while the killer was an abusive bastard, see Speckled Band. Conclusion, arrest and have the killer charged (Or in the case of Speckled Band, indirectly murder him yourself then shrug and go home)
Option two: The victim was murdered to protect someone that the victim was abusing, or for vengeance, see Boscombe Valley, Devilâs Foot, Abbey Grange. Conclusion, Oops, I donât know who the killer is, I am suddenly incompetent, oh look a pheasant.

Letâs not forget the time Holmes helps a young woman whoâs being catfished by her own stepfather to steal her inheritance, and when the villain sneers that the law canât touch him, Holmes grabs a horsewhip out of sheerest chivalry.
I think itâs also important to note, and complicates our ideas about what the highly patriarchal/misogynistic society of 19th century England looked like, that these stories SOLD
they were POPULAR
the Victorians LIKED reading about women who won out over shitty men in their lives, even when that plotline reaffirmed a womanâs power and agency or put an active sexist in his place (ie Irene Adler besting Holmes)
which is fascinating in light of. you know. [gestures broadly at all of Victorian gender dynamics, laws, etc.]

As someone who took a minute to warm up to Xavier, this firmly got me in the boat and helped me understand a lot of his characterization, especially because itâs so expertly done. I think the approach to the self aware trope is so incredibly interesting here that Iâve already re-read it a couple times. I absolutely love this fic and really consider this to be the fic that got me obsessed with Xavier.

I think these bring some adorable and hilarious points of view on Xavier that might not seem obvious at first but are so true. Prepare to see xaviersbunny a few more times lol, her random headcanons are perfectly in character and I couldnât leave them out.

The sentimental side of Xavier is one I think we donât get to see very often, and I cannot express how much I love it whenever I get a glimpse. Thereâs something so intimate about this fic, it truly feels like a secret whispered between lovers.
Thrown to the Wolves | @xinghuisknight
This hurts in the best way possible. Each line in this fic is so beautifully written, itâs impossible to pick out a favorite quote. Everything about this is just masterfully done, and the emotions are so raw and real. Itâs absolutely delicious.
Into the Sun | @starkissedxav
Xavier has such a subtle kind of care that I absolutely love to see. Heâs so attentive and observant, and this fic makes sure that that aspect shines through. This fic is so wonderfully soft, it feels like a warm hug with every sentence. It holds a good reminder that although things may get heavy, thereâs always someone to help lighten the load.

These made me laugh so hard and manage to show some (albeit minor) faults in the typically picture-perfect Doctor Zayne. I love seeing different sides of him in these headcanons that arenât front and center in a lot of the in-game cards.
Love Beyond the Game | @pawpurrin
I really love the self aware turned reverse isekai perspective of this fic, and it really kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved seeing the slow build of the relationship and all the comforting domesticity. The sad ending is so beautifully heartbreaking, and the happy ending is just perfectly warm, I love them both.
Learned by Heart | @deepspacenova
Zayne and his way of loving is captured beautifully here. I live for the domesticity of their love. And his little nerdy side is absolutely adorable (as expected lol). This is certain to make anyone fall in love with him, whether theyâre a Zayne main or not.

Zayne is so pathetically in love in this fic, itâs absolutely adorable. Seeing him so unguarded is so much fun, itâs almost as if heâs letting out his inner child thatâs never gotten a chance to shine. Even our most stoic doctor deserves a moment of relief <3

What can I say, I love the yearning. And this fic might just be the personification of it. Seeing Zayne so (quite honestly) pathetically in love is so heartwarming. This sort of innocent love is hard to come by in the aptly-called Love and Depression, but seeing it here feels so natural. Itâs just like a warm embrace.

This almost made me cry. The descriptions of the aftermath of a nightmare were perfect, and Zayneâs comfort was absolutely wonderful. I love seeing his authoritative care throughout, and the his comments about alternate universes really stuck with me. I just love this piece so much.

The use of masks to show Rafayelâs struggle to be himself felt so real and the depictions of depression felt so real. This is just such an interesting read that Iâve come back to read a few times.

The progression on this is absolutely perfect, it makes this fic such an entertaining read. I love Rafayel slowly descend into that pathetic loverboy who misses his cutie. A perfect amount of dramatization and realness combine to make a perfect characterization.

Thereâs so much yearning in this fic and I love it so much. Abysswalker!Rafayel is such an interesting character, and being able to see through his nonchalant mask is wonderful. Combine that with beautiful prose, and this fic is just absolutely amazing.

This fic is just so beautifully poetic. Itâs a wonderful examination of Rafayelâs character and the way he loves. His need to have this love last without slipping through his hands is heartbreaking, and the entire fic is just gorgeous. In my opinion, itâs a must-read.

These are sure to bring a laugh while also being so true to his character. Thereâs a unique perspective on Rafayel here that I think isnât seen very often but is so so correct. I think this really shows that chaotic nature of his personality, and the vulnerability hiding not far beneath the surface.

I really love the perspective on art and beauty here and I think it correctly shows how Rafayel would view it as well. Itâs an unexpectedly comforting read with a lot of beauty to be found in such a short fic.

Seeing it go from self aware to reverse-isekai is soooo cool. Lemurian Sea God Rafayel is so beautiful and terrifying to see, and I love the way he appears in this fic. Throughout this entire series, there is such creativity flowing through it that keeps me intrigued and on my toes.

Itâs just so cute to see Rafayel get flustered (I love his little blush!) but I really love the relationship dynamic they have going on here. I donât see the bodyguard role come into play a lot in fics, and I love seeing it here. Plus Rafayel is so perfectly dramatic, this is just an adorably entertaining read all around.

Hilariously combining the Y/N & CEO trend with a delusion Y/N makes this one of the funniest fics Iâve read. Even through that humor, there are moments of vulnerability in the series that I love getting glimpses of, however brief. This is a spectacular read all around.

Luke and Kieran as six year olds is something I didnât know I needed, and yet Iâm obsessed. Quiet family life with Sylus is absolutely adorable, and seeing him navigate the possibility of a new relationship even with his trust issues and desire to protect his sons is so interesting and wonderful to see.
Sylusâs Little Twins | @abyssyby
Urs gives Sylus the soft epilogue he truly deserves, and Lucian and Kyros are so insanely adorable, I canât take it. Managing to make everything so intimate and yet silly is truly a gift, and this is a must-read for anyone, Sylus main or not.

Sylusâs insistence that his partner recognize their worth is displayed beautifully here, and in a way that is sure to comfort the reader as well. Though it nearly made me cry, this is a fic Iâve reread again and again due to the quiet beauty of it.

Seeing Sylusâs reaction to someone finally trusting him with their vulnerability is somewhat heartbreaking, and yet beautiful at the same time. I love this fic and I think it truly shows Sylusâs tendency to take care of those close to him, itâs all just so so sweet.

I, unfortunately, have not yet read nearly as much of this series as I would have liked to. However, from the very beginning, it becomes so clear why everyone who reads this fic so highly recommends it. Masterful writing and an intriguing plot line make this an absolutely wonderful read. :)

Though some of the gore may be a bit difficult to get through, the raw devotion of this fic is beautiful. It nearly made me cry but itâs so worth it. Poetic throughout, the yearning and heartache makes this a wonderful read.

I really love quiet comfort with Sylus, and this fic might just be the personification of that. He always gives his lover the space to be themselves, and this really shows his need to have them come to him first. I think everyone needs an understanding like what Sylus gives here.

To me these really let Sylusâs softer side shine through. Giggling at kids movies and being so willing to dote on his lover, it all just makes him seem more endearing. These headcanons seem nothing like the intimidating persona he often puts on, and yet theyâre so in-character at the same time.

This is so gorgeously written that it honestly hurts. The way Caleb revolves around you, and the way you revolve around him in your own little universe is so beautiful. Itâs just beautifully written, Iâm afraid Iâm at a loss for words.

This really emphasizes Calebâs different facets, although his habit of not taking care of himself is a moment of heartbreak in the midst of funny headcanons. Either way, Kenn once again nails characterization with some funnier perspectives.
Forget Me Not | @lowkeylaufeysons
Caleb is so disgustingly adorable in this and I am here for it. Seeing him have a naive sort of innocence, however brief, is absolutely wonderful. This is so sweet, seriously.
Making Up After a Fight | @starryeyed-knight
The aftermath of a fight always holds an interesting air, especially with such an intense character as Caleb. His devotion shines through, but even more so is his desperate reliance on MC. A wonderful hurt/comfort dynamic that I think sheds a lot of light on Calebâs character.
Text Me Back When You Get Home | @someonestopsoren
This hurts so much. The grief, the feeling that something is missing, the regret is all beautifully written. I really enjoy any fics that show MC grieving Caleb, and the loss is so fresh in this fic that each feeling seems so real, like itâs happening to me.
Figured You Out | @deepspacenova
Thereâs something terrifying about this fic in a way thatâs uniquely Caleb. His yandere tendencies dictate such a huge part of his character, and I think this fic expertly puts them front and center. Itâs so interesting to read and really kept me on the edge of my seat.
Rely on Me | @mrsqins
I think this perfectly portrays the friction in Caleb and MCâs relationship after his return, as well as Calebâs desperation to have her rely on him. Every reaction felt raw and real, and the shift from reliance to independence is so interesting to see.

Meet Cute Scenarios | @chronosdawn
Each scenario is so cute (as the title suggests) it makes my heart hurt. Each interaction is so different and yet perfectly fits the kind of relationship I think each Love Interest would encourage. It seems like a view into a much softer world than that of the Love and Deepspace universe, and one I would definitely recommend.
Soulmates?! | @starkissedxav
This is absolutely adorable. Little glimpses of vulnerability combined with some flustered-ness makes this so sickeningly sweet. And there are some beautiful lines in here to boot. Just a wonderful read all around.
LADS Men Read Thirst Tweets | @jellyelle
This is so incredibly funny, I love it so much. Zayne misunderstanding everything is hilarious, Rafayel consistently mentioning his bodyguard is so evil of him, Sylus living up to his grandpa nickname is perfect, Xavier being so naive is adorable, and Caleb just feeding into everything is so mischievous. This is just so perfect, I love it.
Falling For You | @heartofafiend
To me, this really is a great examination on how the Love Interests love and what they tend to focus on. Each of them have a tendency to almost worship their significant other, and this fic picks apart how they would go about that. Plus itâs so, so sweet.

I think this fic really shows each Love Interestâs desire to take care of their lover and the different ways they go about it. The comfort and subtle authority is just so perfectly in character, I found this to be a wonderfully heartwarming read.

This is a perspective on isekai that I donât see very often. I love the feelings of dissociation littered throughout and it truly keeps you on your toes. Heartbreaking at times and comforting in another, this is definitely a unique read that I keep coming back to.

Pure fluff that I think shows the kind of softness the Love Interests deserve in a relationship. I absolutely love seeing them away from the stress and pressure of their normal lives, and what better way to decompress than a day at the beach with their lover? ;)

This has to be the funniest Love and Deepspace fic Iâve read. The dynamics of each Love Interest combine beautifully here into a dramatically funny AU that I canât wait to see more of.
What Will Happen to the LADS Men When You Finally Choose? | @snowypi
This is a difficult read, but it is so viscerally true. Each reaction feels so in character and the pain feels so real. I hate that they canât all be chosen, but I guess thatâs just how the story goes. I love seeing this interpretation of their characters. Itâs the truth, no matter how bitter it tastes.
