About your ritual host: I'm Daphne. I'm a detransitioned queer woman in her 30s who uses she/her pronouns. I'm a cultural anthropologist - interested in the ethnography of mysticism! - and (mostly) classical archaeologist who is also an eclectic polytheist, primarily focused on the Hellenic pantheon. I have devoted myself heart and soul to Dionysos since January 2025 and will be dedicating my life to Dionysos-Zagreus in February 2027. At the moment, this is my only blog!

About the ritual: My ritual is not attested to in antiquity nor is it strictly Hellenic polytheist, though I have taken care to incorporate elements of traditional Anthesteria celebrations

I will be celebrating Mar 1-3. I constructed my ritual around the ways I celebrate or spend time with my own loved ones on their birthdays and the anniversaries of their deaths! Much of my ritual is private. In service to my beloved Lord of Souls, I invite ANYONE who has lost someone to participate regardless of religion

On your behalf, I will:

Offer wine and prayers to Dionysos

Offer wine to your deceased loved ones (water to any deceased pets)

Offer (Greek!) coffee and a home-cooked breakfast to your loved ones, including treats for any pets

Read your intentions or messages before burning them in offering

Offer fruit and prayers to Hermes

This is a 3 day ritual!

I am honouring many of my own loved ones during my ritual: my mom and dad; three aunts; my brother; my friend; and two uncles

Modern Demonolatry Books (not all before I get the 'but I'm a modern demonolatry person and I'm not one of those'): "Guys, I'm secretly a N4zi"

Me: "... I'll just make my own rituals guys, it's okay, I'll pass on your "wisdom"."

But no seriously, not just that but the fact that all the goetia demons are just flattened into archetypes of like three different vibes: "sex crazed thing", "knowledge creature" and then finally "I hate humans" - so it's like, yeahhhh no thank you.

Of course I read it anyway, knowledge is power, can't make my own rituals without understanding the puzzle pieces behind how they work, but still I'm reading all of these and I'm just like '... man I am not about to call my lords bitch babies and expect them to help me'

Hii! I do have a few under my belt!!

Don't focus on looking for a pretty deck. Focus on finding a deck that you feel connected to. I unfortunately have a habit of collecting decks, and the only reason that's unfortunate is because I sometimes cannot get along with the decks that I buy. Now, this isn't to say that you can't buy a deck that you like the theme of, absolutely go do that! I'm just saying to keep two things in mind instead of one.

Some people find it easier to do readings for others. Other people find it easy to do readings for themselves. I suggest starting out with trying a reading for yourself, and then trying one for a very close friend that won't mind it (can even be an online friend, I find that's a lot less nervewracking), and try seeing which one felt easier to determine.

Don't be shy to look up card meanings. I still have to do it. The trick is not in memorizing card meanings, it's in learning how to apply the meaning to the question you asked the deck. Labyrinthos is excellent for learning the card meanings if you want to (they also have some neat spreads)

If you can't have a physical deck, online tarot works just fine. Again, Labyrinthos is excellent for online tarot readings, it has the best reputation among digital readers.

I suggest using spreads when you're starting out. They can really help you learn how to apply the meanings to the situation. You can find several on Pinterest and Tumblr! You can even find sillier ones if the deeper ones seem too intimidating at first.

Don't push your limits. Hydrate yourself. Do not do a reading on an empty stomach. Many people get physical side effects when doing readings, especially when starting out. Common ones are headaches, dizziness, stomach aches, fatigue, etc. Take a nap after if you need.

Don't push your limits part 2: mental edition. Don't start out by asking deep questions. Decks can be brutal sometimes, and it's easier to decipher them if you start with other types of readings.

Tarot Reading Ethics 101: try to avoid doing intrusive readings. These are readings that involve questions asking about someone's thoughts, feelings, or reasonings behind their actions. Keep it consensual. Access to tarot feeds some egos, and that's fine. You have power, you have the right to use it. Just make sure you're not using it in a way that would feel bad if you were the other person.

Bond with your deck. Interview it. Ask it about itself. Some people have names for their decks. You can too!

Take care of your decks. Keep them clean.

There is a difference between cleansing a deck and purifying a deck, and people often conflate them. Cleansing will get rid of all the energy in something, essentially turning it into a blank slate. Like factory resetting. Purifying removes unwanted energy. Adjust accordingly.

You also don't have to purify / cleanse at all. I don't think I've ever cleansed or purified any of mine (except the one that hates me because I thought there was something wrong, but like people, you just won't get along with every deck) and they all work just fine.

Try to read each card like one word of a sentence. Use the imagery on the cards too.

Learn about each Suit. Wands = fire. Cups = water. Swords = air. Pentacles = earth. Learn why the Minor Arcana is ordered that way, why the Major Arcana comes first, what makes them different, etc.

That's all I can think of from the top of my noggin, but if anyone else would like to add anything, go right ahead.

(This post jokingly pokes fun at recent discourse. I am a godspouse. My actual opinion is quite different.)

The reason godspousing exists is... y'all haven't learned to order the gods about properly.

So here's how to deal with unruly deities:

When a god shows romantic interest, ignore them. Remind the deity they are a nonhuman cosmic organizer of the universe. They have better things to do than pay special attention to one small human. It's entirely inappropriate for a deity to notice a tiny speck like you. Tell them to get back to work!

If the god persists, stick your fingers in your ears and quote the words of Plato, Proclus, Cicero, or your favorite historical source. Emphasize that deities can't have emotions or desires.

Didn't some dead philosophers write that the gods only exist in divine bliss? Since we all know that ancient philosophy was dictated by our deities, the philosophers must be absolutely correct. Use their words as a defense!

If the god appears sexually interested, explain that sex is a base act only appropriate between humans. Point out how human sexual fluids disgust the gods, therefore they cannot possibly desire a human sexually.

If it's a fertility deity, insist they never show you their fertility aspects in a sexual manner. They must keep any related mysteries hidden forever, out of respect for human religious rules.

Never ask a god their opinion about any of the above. It's essential that we tell them how to practice pagan religions properly, so they know who's in charge.

Always frame the above behaviors as respect. Make it clear that you're intent on honoring your gods, by prioritizing all applicable ancient worship practices above the words of any deity.

Therefore when you...

dismiss a god's emotions by insisting they don't have any, you can say you're respecting the gods by not over-anthropomorphizing them

reject a god's advances by elevating them high above us humans, you can say you're maintaining proper humility

vilify godspouses publicly, you can say that's enforcing respect for ancient religious practice and the ancestors who went before us

All of that makes you look good in public and helps you do pagan religion correctly, so make sure to continue!

Order those gods about!

Insist they only interact with you on your terms! Quash any ideas they have about romantic love or sex! Teach them the correct ways of accepting worship!

If you are intimidated by demanding the gods behave according to proper standards, remind yourself it's for the good of the pagan community. Surely deities want their worshippers to be respected by other religions? Therefore the gods must keep their robes on, because we humans say so.

Fuck whatever our deities think about that! Their opinions are much less important than ours are.

Didn't the philosophers explain that we worship for our benefit? Since deities need nothing, they could never be enriched by anything we give them. Hence human preferences are more important.

We should uphold our standards for worship because that benefits us. It makes us look respectable in public, to the community and to other religions.

Therefore, absolutely NO sexual offerings! Regardless of what the fertility gods think about that. They must stop whining about sex, and be content with their offerings of wine, olives, and other traditional things.

Have I offered enough ideas yet?

Hopefully you godspouses have gleaned a few pointers from this post. What you really need is to grow a pair and stop this nonsense. You're far too lax.

Learn to demand proper behavior of your gods. Make them behave like decent deities should.

A lot of modern paganism basically calls back to that era. Leave the cities and industrial technology, it says. Find your spirituality in the forests and gardens, it says. Tear down the concrete and put up green spaces, it says.

Hey, I'm not arguing against environmentalism. I'm not arguing against the idea that Mother Nature is beautiful or that you can find spirituality in undeveloped areas. I'm not arguing that some undeveloped areas should remain undeveloped to protect wildlife and the global ecosystem.

But Greece and Rome were urban civilizations. In the Minoan-Mycenean era, palaces and citadels were the center of religious life. In the Classical era and beyond, temples and sanctuaries in the polis were the center of religious life. And, for the Romans, religion began with a house shrine (lararia).

I'm a city dweller. I'll probably never see grand pagan temples rise in my lifetime. But my job and sense of culture is tied to the city and its institutions. And my gods guard my home where I live downtown.

The Hellenic gods are at home in the city. Take Dionysus, for instance. If Dionysus is sometimes known for frenzied women running about in the countryside, he is perhaps better known for theaters who were intimately tied to the civic and political institutions of the city.

Every time there's a conversation about godspousal, sacred marriage, henosis, theurgy, or any of the many many many terms used to describe loving the divine, there's always the disclaimer

"I'm not calling out the REAL practitioners who have real relationships with their deities and take it SERIOUSLY. I'm only calling out the silly little girls who think they're dating Apollo omg get off tiktok!"

But you also have absolutely no way of telling who is a serious practitioner with years of experience and who is someone role playing.

Okay, I'm gonna be 100% straight right now, there are very obviously lots of people who just roleplay with deities for the sake of fun or comfort. Some people are very frivolous with their practice and don't put the work in or have the due respect they should.

Unfortunately the very likely outcome is that the divine spirit will ignore them or meet them on their own terms. The Gods aren't going to dominate a child or take a edgy teen seriously. Why are you pretending the Gods don't know about amateurs.

People learn and grow, I didn't know jack shit about how to do things properly when I started. Had someone stunted my curiosity and love for what I was growing because it seemed wrong, I would have lost so much of my path. Magic, spirituality, faith, and most of all love, are supposed to be messy. Psychology is messy, none of these things exist in a vacuum. That's the part of the craft I love so much, it's a craft. You build it yourself, but you can only build it for yourself.

Why do you guys care so much about people you believe to be idiots? I personally think many practices are dumb as hell, why would I spend time arguing with those people about how dumb I think they are. Why does their dumb assery even affect me at all???
