if you dress in a way that resembles a costume, you instantiate it as a way that people actually dress, because you are a person & participate democratically in the definition of how people “actually” anything. if a person questions why you’re “dressed as a ____,” they’re saying it’s not actual dress but an abstract deployment of some external referent that they view as inapt for the setting. their statement - that the way a person is actually dressed before them is not a way that people actually dress - is essentially somewhat psychotic, in a subtle & normal way (or, if not psychotic, then at least very Platonist & radically incompatible with the less Platonist perspective on the outfit that i am offering here). they make the claim only because the style of dress has not displayed a sufficient foothold in reality which would render their statement psychotic beyond a certain threshold, one past which they would no longer be comfortable expressing the claim. it would be like insisting that the people around you dressed in t-shirts were only a moonlighting as citizens of the twenty-first century & not really dressing as people do
