in my culture not only do we hate family and food but we also leave our plastic bags loosely strewn all over the floor and we don't even have a quaint little name for a small local convenience store you can buy sandwiches at.
"what if sex selective abortion leads to an heavy imbalance of genders?" Change the underlying social misogyny that causes that, instead of forcing women to have carry babies they don't want!
People are aware that "those stupid slut should've kept her legs closed, she should have the baby as punishment" is a bad thing, but often forget that forced birth as punishment is bad for bad things too
"dont have a child if it matters so much to you what they come out as that youd get a sex selective abortion" is not the same thing as "you have to have a child you don't want" there is no forced birth as punishment here
Ok, I don't disagree about that people should love children the same regardless of gender, but that's not the point: Someone is currently pregnant and doesn't want to be because the baby would be a girl. Should they be allowed to get an abortion or should they be forced to give birth?
They should be allowed to get an abortion, and they are! What is banned is finding out whether the baby would be a girl or not
So beyond the principle that you deserve to know what's going on with your own body and that your doctors should not be hiding that information from you, here's a practical example:
A woman has had three girls and is pregnant again because her husband wants a boy, because the culture she's in values boys more than girls. She does not want to give birth a fifth time. Should she be forced to give birth given that set up?
She should definitely not be forced to give birth. I do not think preventing her from knowing the sex of her baby is the same as forcing her to give birth!
I broadly agree with the principle that you get to know what's going on with your body but the sex of your baby has little enough bearing on anything important that I don't mind an exception
I have just explained a specific, real world case where the sex of the baby matters to the person carrying it in a fashion that's not just personal preference.
Are you saying a woman who expects she will be pressured into having kids until she has a boy should also have to carry any individual fetus to term?
I have just explained a specific, real world case where the sex of the baby matters to the person carrying it in a fashion that's not just personal preference.
I don't think this is true? It is personal preference on the part of her _husband_.
I don't think she should have to carry any individual fetus to term!
I think your argument here is something like "Banning pre-natal sex determination predictably increases the number of women who will be forced to get pregnant and so we should oppose it for that reason"?
Yes! The policy of banning pre-natal sex determination is one which de facto is treating women not as having ownership and control over their own bodies but as wombs to produce the Right Kind of Children, and that's fucked up!
but as wombs to produce the Right Kind of Children
Okay but the policy is not in fact treating women like this. The people who the policy is preventing from knowing the pre-natal sex are treating women like this
My opinion is that banning pre-natal sex determination is unideal but it does have benefits in changing the social norms enough that it leads to a net reduction of violations of bodily autonomy of women
At its heart, this looks to me like an accelerationist argument: “we need to deliberately make things worse [restricting women’s right to medical information and bodily autonomy] in the hope this will eventually cause people to Rise Up and make things better [a more anti-sexist society].”
And the counterargument is the same as it is to pretty much all accelerationist arguments: making things worse doesn’t make things better, it just makes things worse. The long-shot gamble of a fuzzily-defined revolution in the future almost never pays off, certainly not often enough to justify the intentional pain and rights violations in the here-and-now.
This is a contender for my new favorite fusion paper. How does it feel to be the realest god damn scientist on the planet Dr. Smiet

The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

"bottom" please consider 🫵 whether the word you are looking for is in fact "submissive" ! because if we decide that taking dick means your personality & character r inherently subservient 😃 we might as well just throw in the towel on the most basic premise of feminism & 🔫 kill ourselves 🎉

The existence of a separate moral category of monks or secular saints or w/e is apparently important because absolutely nothing turns people into rabid chimps faster than seeing someone living their life in a way that might conceivably imply they should do better with their own.
[aspiring highway bandit voice] oh yes absolutely your decentralized anticiv pastoral utopia with no form of organized or regulated transport of goods sounds incredible

She should not be allowed to find out the gender of her child, and she should leave her husband and be given assistance to do so or given the option to get sterilized without any input required from her partner.
Please consider that the sort of woman who is getting pressured to have babies until she has a boy may not be able to get divorced easily, or may not have the social and cultural support for doing so, and should not be forced to choose between "have babies she does not want to have" and "get divorced and leave everything she knows behind because you are uncomfortable with her reason for getting an abortion"
It's fucked up that there are women in this situation, and that their cultural upbringing encourages this! That ought to be changed, just like how the cultural factors that encourage boys to be seen as more valuable than girls are fucked up! But that is a long term solution to a current problem
i've always believed the fixation on 'mean girls' specifically is because it's a violation of gender roles first and foremost--a 'mean boy' in high school is a regular high schooler. the internet isn't ready for this take yet though so be careful
