The Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad is, to a modern audiences, what classicists have called βboring as hell,β but I canβt help but think that if you were watching Homer recite it it would have been more like when comedians go, βanybody here tonight from Chicago?β and the Chicagoans in the back start cheering
Homerβs like, βand there were forty black ships fromβ¦ LOCRISβ and the Locrians in the crowd start going absolutely nuts
going down those long spiral stairs to the tube bc the escalators are broken
I hate it when I talk wistfully about the ancient world and then people are likeΒ βyou wouldnβt survive back thenβ yeah obviously I would die immediately but do you think achilles would be able to survive in the modern world if he had to send one polite email? no
congrats to these people on being funnier than me on my own fucking post
reading about the participation of children in rituals as a form of play in ancient greece and came across an incredibly charming story from julius pollux's onomasticon where a flood prevented the adults from reaching a sanctuary to sacrifice a ram to heracles, and the children solved the problem by....sticking a bunch of sticks in an apple to give it "legs" and "horns" and offering it as a sacrifice instead. it's such a charming thought and i can perfectly picture kids these days also pretending at sacrificing an apple "goat" at recess
catch me on the playground playing sacrifices

(to me) aeneas' personality doesn't have the driving force of odysseus' in the odyssey, and the battles in the aeneid don't have the emotional depth of the iliad's, but what the aeneid generally has going for it, and i mean this sincerely, is what i like to call aeneas' dead animal swag
Hollow Man of all time dissociating his way through his own epic. Watching in dim horror from far away as the parasite of destiny pupates within him, puppets him, consumes the body and idea of "Aeneas" from the inside before finally hatching from his corpse.
Telemachus is gonna get his life together eventually trust
Do NOT tumble dry the Trojan spawn of Aphrodite he must be a wet cat at ALL times lest he lose suicidal tendencies
the gods: CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU ARE DESTINED TO FOUND GREAT ROME, YOU MUST ESCAPE YOUR BELOVED CITY WHICH IS BURNING TO THE GROUND AND LEAVE BEHIND EVERYTHING YOUVE EVER CARED ABT TO GO FIND THIS PLACE U DONT EVEN KNOW EXISTS :D
Aeneas:
The difference between Odysseus hurting someone and Aeneas hurting someone is one is like if a cat bites you and the other is like if a dog bites you.
Odysseus hurts people and you go "yeah he just does that usually", but when Aeneas does the same it's like "what??? The fuck???"
This is because when reading the Odyssey you quickly get to know He Is Just Like That, and has absolutely no emotional intelligence, whereas Aeneas shows an ability to be a nice and good person and therefore has enough emotional intelligence to know when he is hurting someone.
(It also helps that Homer writes like he actually likes Odysseus as a character, but Vergil clearly fucking hates Aeneas half the time (the Carthaginians are like bees who are lovely and awesome and friendly and the Trojans are like ANTS who fucking SUCK and STEAL MY GRAIN))

Apollo telling Aeneas to fight Achilles and then just ditching him is so funny to me like did he just forget? Did he bank on the fact that Poseidon would come collect him? Did he fully plan to throw him at Achilles as canon fodder? Did he think Aeneas would WIN?? Itβs giving your mom leaving you in line at the grocery store except the cashier is a bloodthirsty twink and also your mom has abandoned you to die.
