Many people feel that LLMs are a fundamentally unethical technology because they are built on the theft of intellectual property, rely on exploited labor, waste natural resources, spread misinformation, deskill workers, stunt the cognitive development of students, and contribute to a consolidation of power that is unhealthy for a democratic society.
I feel like this critique applies to YouTube and Google, among other things.
it's awkward that many people clearly have a visceral dislike of LLMs as a technology and every company involved in their promotion (although less so the actual people behind their development, that's more complicated), and it compels them to find LLMs deeply immoral in every possible way, even if these critiques would apply more strongly to other technologies that pass without notice.
There is (or at least was) a reciprocal relationship between content authors and youtube/google. You let google index your site and you get traffic. And you could block them through robots.txt. for youtube there were at least semi-serious competitors like vimeo. LLMs have none of the consent or reciprocity
YouTube wouldn't have achieved its current level without pervasive copyright infringement though, and early search engines including Google were often considered to be infringing copyright by "deep linking"! some of that even had to be hashed out in the courts.
YouTube mostly achieved its current position from just being able to have google ad revenue foot the bill for the really, really, really expensive and massive private CDN they operate for serving all the videos efficiently. That and being able to get the ad rev to foot the bill for the storage costs. YouTube won ages ago on the general rule of "the videos load better" for end users, because Google was footing the massive bill until they achieved market dominance.
(we're kinda seeing the actual scaling limits of that, mostly on the side of continuing to grow the overall amount of storage for new videos, constantly, while needing to also keep up repairs and replacements on all the old disks)
i am mostly of the opinion that advertising should just straight up be illegal and YouTube shouldn't be able to exist, at least not at this scale, as nice as it is to have a generic video hosting website. Like, yes, the cultural part of how YouTube got to be where it is is important, but the REAL reason that sets apart YouTube and LLMs is the absolutely massive technical scale they operate at, that no one else can operate at, because they have the capital to brute force their way past logistical bottlenecks everyone else has to contend with.
formative years? aren’t they all?

there's a lot of talk about reading comprehension and one thing i think is the biggest barrier to people on this site getting better at it is simply... rushing. rushing to share something you haven't understood, rushing to have an opinion without taking the time to think about it, rushing to declare that you don't understand something
take these tags, on somebody else's post (condolences pip)
the thing is. this is what i would call an inside thought. nobody would have known you didn't get it if you didn't tell them that. if you recognised that it was important but didn't have the headspace to process it, you can reblog without commentary for others, or to come back to later. or you can save it somewhere and wait until you DO have the capacity to read it over a few more times, ponder it, consider what it might mean, figure out how to understand it, and THEN reblog it
but no. rushing to reblog while it is still opaque. rushing to admit to ignorance rather than spend the time to achieve understanding. perhaps hoping that somebody will break it down for you more simply, though to my mind it was quite simply phrased in the first place. never stopping to take the time first
comprehension is not always instant! sometimes it takes a bit of time for something to percolate after you read it; sometimes you need to read it a few times; sometimes you realise you don't have the context for it and either go and get the context or accept that it's not for you right now
please just simply slow down. you don't always have to respond to everything within a second or two. it is okay if it is not an instantaneous understanding. we all need to get more comfortable with thinking more slowly and more deeply and more carefully, and not letting our instant split second responses drive us all the time, because they are a barrier to genuine reflection
and someday together we'll shine

Actually you SHOULD make problematic content. You SHOULD explore dark or taboo topics. You SHOULD have a space where you can cope with your traumas or explore sensitive topics in a way that doesn't hurt anyone.
Also you should make problematic content for funsies. You don't need to have had trauma or need to be coping in order to explore dark creativity. You can just be a human who wants to explore dark and taboo topics because you want to. That's completely normal, btw.
Every single person on this planet thinks about dark and taboo things. It's literally the most normal thing in the world.
Go draw the horror porn and be free.
we should all be more like david cronenberg and write fucked up stuff. For Funsies

Times That Copyright Expansion Has Historically Fucked Over Artists On An Institutional Level:
Sampling rights becoming prohibitively expensive to use by small artists
Musicians being forced to sign over sampling rights to their record company, making any benefits they would hypothetically gain moot.
The Digital Milennium Copyright Act leading to the vidmaker-stomping nightmare that is ContentID
The DMCA leading to making it harder than ever to preserve media due to the way it prohibits tinkering with any locks the megacorps put on it, meaning it's way easier for artists' hard work to end up vaulted and lost.
The way basic chord progressions and musical styles have become copyrightable thanks to various lawsuits by the Marvin Gaye estate
The fact that the artists of the past used to be able to remix; adapt and iterate on art made within 56 years of them, likely created in their lifetimes, and now artists can only do those things with art produced nearly a century ago by people long dead.
New and independent artists being crowded out of the market by megacorp-owned IPs that would be public domain (and thusly convey less of an overwhelming advantage-via-marquee-value to megacorps) if the US had its pre-1976 copyright laws.
Times That Copyright Expansion Has Actually Materially Helped Artists On An Institutional Level:
????????
Times that Copyright Expansion Resulted In Something Kinda Funny:
When Metallica did a twitch concert and got a copyright strike on their own music as a direct result of their lobbying for copyright expansion
