Kelsey is a teacher that loves to learn. But then to keep up this image, we find out she's been plagiarizing encyclopedias. And her demise is (in part) due to her curiosity: trading knowledge for Zhouzel to occupy her brain. And in the end, she chooses to continue to be a teacher and guide these kids who still believe they can save their doomed world.

Trudy is the doting housewife. But you find out she's a robot built by her husband and she no longer wants to be subservient. Yet, she is still a mother and ends up sacrificing everything (her body, her lover, arguably Peachyville) to save her son. In the end, she does save him though.

Francis is an awkward, emotional teenager that needs to gain some confidence. But he does so by killing people, and his parents only encourage it. (Also, very reminiscent of this war time agenda that young men become soldiers that live to kill and die.) But Francis has guilt, which nearly kills him, but he has the support of Trudy and Kelsey who stop him too. And in the end, it's hopeful because he doesn't sacrifice himself but chooses to go with Trudy and try to live a better life.

Tony dies early, so presumably his story was going to be about the fact he was a draft dodger. But even as is, the fact he's the only white adult man in the beginning, and he's that "American dream" story (other than being a cat with gay dads, he immigrated legally to the U.S., pulled himself up by his bootstraps and started a mildly successful albeit questionable business and he never got caught for avoiding the terrors of war). He benefits the most from societal norms, so when it goes to shit, he dies. Which kind of shows this fear white men have of if "other" people have their rights, then what separates us from them?
