i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.
James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!
I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.
Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.
While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.

People just becoming politically aware are never going to appreciate just how fucking hated this guy was before he was in politics. He was hated for over half a century. Everyone aware of him mocked and derided him as a cheating, greedy corporate asshole and mindless bully and this is by far not the only time anyone clocked his ass but it is probably one of the only times it got caught on video.
Hatred of him was bipartisan all my life and it just goes to show how easily right wingers can be suckered by anyone who kisses their collective asshole on their pet agendas.

I'll be honest. I think Ineffa is a step in the right direction.
If you don't look at leaks, then feel free to skip over this post, but I wanted to talk about Ineffa for a minute. (the picture is unrelated)

I've seen some really mixed reactions to Ineffa since her design was leaked. For me, as soon as I heard we were getting a mech girl, I was stoked, and when I actually saw her for myself, I wasn't disappointed. I think she's different from any genshin character we've seen and I LOVE that about her. Natlan was starting to feel redundant and samey and I was ready for something new.
I disagree with those saying she's too modern for genshin, too.
Yes, she is a bit more modern than the mech in Fontaine for example, but I still think she resembles them quite a lot. And we've had Katheryne since the beginning of the game, who is also a robot, so it's not as if Ineffa is the first. I read one comment that very intelligently summed it up more or less like this: it isn't weird to have a character whose design is a step between the Fontaine mech and Katheryne. I couldn't agree more.

People keep bringing up the Natlan character designs in the discussion about Ineffa (including me lol). Some say she's as modern as they are, and some even say she's worse. I COMPLETELY disagree. Ineffa is still distinctly fantasy and does bear a resemblance to technology we have already seen in Genshin, whereas Mavuika's bike, Xilonen's DJ mixer, Kinich/Ajaw's pixels... these don't resemble ANYTHING we've seen before or since in Genshin. No one else has ever had a DJ mixer or a ultra modern looking motorcycle. Pixels are something we have never seen before in genshin iirc, see nowhere in the open world/environment, and have never seen since.
So I feel it's undeniable that Ineffa meshes better with Teyvat as of now than these other characters. Even if you wanted to say she gives HSR/sci-fi, I feel that even this works better for genshin than urban contemporary (so ZZZ style, more like Kinich or Xilonen), because science fiction and fantasy have a LOT of overlap as genres.
Now. To be fair, someone pointed out Kinich's pixels resemble mesoamerican mosaics and I think that's a really cool take, however they also gave him literal arcade game SFX and a trailer that was entirely centered around the arcade game theme, so we cannot erase the ultra modern vibe they gave Kinich and Ajaw. We also can't erase that literally no one and nothing else in ALL of teyvat resembles them.
And actually one of my few issues with Ineffa is probably that she does have pixels incorporated into her shield. Doesn't match her slightly steampunk aesthetic at all to me. However it isn't part of her actual character design and is a small detail that's easily overlooked, as opposed to Kinich whose entire design, playstyle and animations incorporate pixels.
To be clear: I'm not hating on Natlan characters. I have and LOVE Xilonen and Kinich, I find them very fun to play and have come to love their designs. That doesn't mean I can't be objective about how at odds they are with their own environment. At odds with other nations? That's fine. Inazuma characters looked TOTALLY different from Mondstadt characters, for example. That's not the issue and never has been.
The issue is that we have a rollerblading DJ and a biker girlboss living in a country of huts and mud dwellings. The technology is not explained well, nor is it meshed well with the worldbuilding and environment. The devs could have easily made Mavuika's bike feel as at home in Teyvat as Fontaine's mecha, but they simply did not try. And okay, maybe they wanted it to stand out and feel odd and goofy, but if that's the case we needed the story to be self aware of that fact. But, in my opinion, it was not.

Basically, I love Ineffa's design and I strongly disagree with the narrative currently surrounding her in the engish speaking community. I even love her colors. I love that they're earthy and muted and she's not the 13829382th bright pink and purple girl character in 5.x. I love that she's a robot and that she's more modestly dressed than a lot of the 5.x roster. I love that, at least to me, she does in fact mesh better with Teyvat, and probably will even more when we get to see the place she's from in Nod Krai, because I'm guessing it'll be similar to her in tech and aesthetic.
I feel like Ineffa is taking Genshin back in a direction I've been hoping for. It makes me more hyped and hopeful for 6.x. People calling her a 4 star design and saying she looks like crap or saying she's way too modern for genshin... I feel like we are looking at two different characters. I actually agreed with quite a bit of the criticism for designs like Emilie or Escoffier, etc, but not this time around. And that's understandable, this is a subjective thing, but I do hope people will stop being hateful towards those of us that really like her. I was downvoted and got some ugly comments on reddit for praising her design and that seems ridiculous to me (I know, toxic people with bad takes on reddit, big surprise lol).
As of now, I'm really hoping to at least try my 50/50 on Ineffa. I'm mostly out of primos and 5.7 and 5.8 aren't looking like very generous patches so I might not be able to get her, especially if anyone comes in 6.0 that I want just as much or more. So I'm already sad about the thought of not getting her, but I'm definitely going to try.
I love her, I do not think we lost Capitano for her, I am hyped, I respect those who are not, just don't try to kill my hype. End of story. Incels and femcels can go have a fistfight on reddit, meanwhile I am going to enjoy my male and female characters in peace and not care about what's politically correct (in this case, disliking Ineffa and thinking she doesn't belong in genshin lol).

while the family did express wanting to keep her on life support anyways the truth is the decision is out of their hands regardless. they HAVE to keep her on life support until she births this child and only then will they be allowed to take her off. and of course they still have to pay all the bills for this.
Got reminded again of my old coworker who was a massive misogynist but also trans inclusive. Told me he believed trans women are indeed women because "only women would be stupid enough to want to be women"
He also aggressively corrected himself whenever he accidentally misgendered a trans guy we knew because "there's already more women than men in the world, the more numbers we steal from them, the better." Did that even when the trans guy wasn't around.
I need to point out that he was completely serious btw. This man had no sense of humor if he tried.
He was a cook at the restaurant/bar I was a bartender at, and almost punched a costumer once because he overheard him talking about how women belong in the kitchen. Told me he thought women should stay out of kitchens, that cooking is a man's job and when I asked him what he thinks women should be doing, he went quiet for a moment, then proceeded to explain to me the following
"I trust a bitch to run a kitchen as much as she can run a country, they should do shit like plumbing. Or electricity. Something you can just learn to do and don't need to lead, you know?"
Apparently women are good at "fixing shit". He claimed that he doesn't trust male plumbers or electricians except if they're gay because "something most be wrong with you if you want to go fix other people's houses, that's that maternal instinct"
Love that you guys seem to like the stories about my Guy, here's another. (also for context i need to say that english is not the language he spoke, and when i say 'fag', i'm using it for our version of the slur. Our Guy insisted that that's just how you call gay people in our language (it isn't))
We had an openly gay coworker who looked like it (crop tops, dyed hair, make-up) and he was often harassed by the waiters from the football bar next door. The gay dude had the same name as the Guy, who insisted that we would specify the he isn't gay, so they just became "Name" and "Not Gay Name". He was fine with that.
Oh he also once went on a rant about how he respects our gay coworker more than "those other fags" because "at least he has the balls to look like a fag, yknow? None of that sneaky shit where you can't tell if they're trying to fuck you or your girlfriend." When I then told him I was bi, he looked me over and called me some slurs before telling me that I don't need to rub it in that I can get both. Then he asked me if I think he's hot and when I told him no, he informed me I should stick with women because I clearly have shit taste.
He once accidentally bullied one of our younger waitresses out of an early eating disorder she was developing before working there (she told me about it after)
Boss gave us one meal from the menu a day as a job bonus, and we had this very shy seventeen year old working with us who was already nervous around men, but Our Guy was a 6'3 dude who only stopped yelling and cursing when he was not speaking at all. If he was the one cooking that day, he'd peek out of the kitchen an hour before he'd start closing it up, and would shout at you if you haven't ordered your meal yet because he hated cooking once he already cleaned. The waitress was scared shitless of him, and so whenever he would yell at her to "fucking order already", she'd panic and just pick something.
She didn't eat much but the first time she tried to throw out almost the whole plate, he got so personally insulted that he berated her for not picking something she'd like, and demanded to know what he did wrong. He got really upset about apparently not being able to cook something that this kid would like and I'm pretty sure he started putting in extra effort to make sure she would eat it this time? It lead to him quite literally standing over her like a hawk when she ate to "see her reaction" and demand an immediate review to see what he can improve.
She later told me that it she was so scared and awkward around him back then that it kind of overrode her fear of food, and that she still sometimes pretends she's back there, when she feels a bad episode coming on, so. He did do something good for the world i guess
Our Guy met a nonbinary person once when my friend came to visit me at work. He was just on a smoke break so I had to introduce them and when I said "They're visiting" he got confused and asked us how many people are there (and then threatened murder if they dare order something while he's on a break). I had to explain this man what a nonbinary person is, he thought about it for a second, called the whole thing "fucking stupid, there ain't that shit in nature" and then proceeded to very mockingly refer to them as (our language equivalent of) "your majesty" and use the pronouns you use for people you're supposed to respect (which is genderless and very formal)
My friend thought he was really funny before I explained to them that I'm pretty sure he thought he was being mean (but hey he it wasn't misgendering so yay)
Then (after his break) they ordered a vegan sandwich and we heard him cussing them out about how "they should pick a fucking struggle". Later I asked him about it and got told that "how much shit can you deny yourself? Cheese, gender, the fuck's next?"
I like how his issue isn't with the "that shit ain't in nature" thing he mentioned, but the idea that being nonbinary is some form of self-deprivation and that they deserve a gender like everyone else.
"what if a dangerous man pretends to be trans to-" what if we actually dealt with the underlying causes of dangerous men. what if predators faced real consequences more often. what if you stopped using trans women as a proxy for your grievances with liberal feminism's individualist denial of the need to fight systemic issues.
