this is gonna be the day that i tell you that in slavic folklores as recounted and reported by bohdan baranowski and łukasz kozak vampirism/upyrism/strigoism is a) a strictly peasant phenomenon with little if any reported cases of vampirism among the nobility b) a congenital condition that people have to be born into (and there are signs, like being born with a caul, with teeth partly in already etc) c) traditionally not transmitted, one can't be infected into it d) did not necessarily exclude a prospective undead person from the community, as there are stories of cases where both before and after death the upyrs/strigas served their human villages e.g. with their magic powers, controlling the weather; or returned to their human children after death to mend their clothes or sing them lullabies; and in case of harm done to the village by spreading disease or targeting people, the offending upyr would be located in the cemetery and put down for good. the stories of rich vampires who exploit and infect are essentially stories of greedy masters who wanted what they couldn't have from people they despised, subjugated and worked to death, and when they tried to get it, it turned on them and they obtained a weaker, harmful, warped "copy" of the real thing. anyway go watch sinners (2025)
