do you guys remember when a lot of us theorized this was will giving up and sacrificing himself? whole time it’s actually will finding his inner strength by thinking about how loved he is. by accepting who he is and gaining power from it.

he thinks of meeting mike, of hanging with him in mike’s basement. he thinks of drawing for jonathan and joyce. of building castle byers. he thinks of the things that make him special - his creativity, playfulness and wonder and whimsy.

he is an artist. he is a sorcerer in a hat and robe. he is a good friend. he’s sweet and sensitive and thoughtful. he is a son and a brother. he is queer. he is STRONGER because of all of these things.

It's actually crazy to have this contrast between Mileven and Byler shown in the same episode if you think about it. They're literally throwing it straight in our faces that Mike's fight with Will upsets him so much more and is more serious to him than his fight with El (that lead to a break up mind you). Like what do you mean Max tells El that Mike is gonna crawl back to her, desperately trying to apologize because according to Max that's what boyfriends do after a fight and then Mike does in fact do that but... not for his girfriend but for his best friend. Biking to the other side of Hawkins in the pouring rain immediately after the argument to beg for Will's forgiveness.

and his character is strong

this is actually such a huge deal to someone that had such little representation growing up. older gays had none at all. whether or not Byler is endgame (it is) this is a huge win

Mike who was scared of both his friends and himself because of how far in he was to his internalized homophobia. Mike Wheeler who didn’t go to Lucas’s game. Mike Wheeler who to the GA became a dick out of nowhere??

THIS is Mike Wheeler who is honest with himself and his friends. Mike Wheeler who probably has already kissed Will. Mike Wheeler who prioritizes protecting people in danger, whether thats his friends or the new kids, he is brave again. Mike Wheeler is brave again!!
