“Our district has a ton of victors that can do the mentoring. Why do I have to watch the kids?” you complained to the Capitol representative for your district.

“Because a certain someone requested you as one of his favorite victors,” the representative replied in his usual overly-cheery tone. “Come on, I know you like him, too!”

“What? What gives you that idea?” you asked. He was spot-on accurate, but you tried very carefully to not give anyone that idea, least of all Flickerman himself.

“Oh, mostly those doe-eyes you gave him at the post-Games interviews,” the representative teased. “Come on, the adults are already partying!”

You let him pull you to one of the many gathering spaces around the building, where the other mentors, representatives, stylists, and other people involved with the Games were talking about the new Tributes and making some early speculations.

“There’s something wrong with this picture: you don’t have a drink yet!” Flickerman stated as he walked over to you carrying two drinks, holding one out to you.

You couldn’t help the grin spreading on your face. “Thank you,” you said, taking the glass and taking a sip.

“So, how’s my favorite victor feeling about her district’s tributes this year?” he asked, throwing his arm around your shoulder.

“Does this ever turn off? Or do you live like a camera’s pointing at you every hour of the day?” you asked, trying to act annoyed.

“What better way to live life than as if I’m always on a stage, right?” Flickerman asked with that huge grin of his. Why did he have to be so charming? Right, because otherwise he probably wouldn’t be a performer.

“I guess,” you replied, not wanting to cause an awkward silence.

“Hey, I hope you don’t mind me asking you to come out here this year. I just wanted to see you again. All that ‘favorite tribute’ stuff isn’t just talk show rhetoric,” Flickerman stated, his arm falling from your shoulder. “Maybe see you outside of Games season?”

So much trouble… all for something so small
