the moral of the clouds by aristophanes is that only thing worse than a horse girl is a debate bro and also that socrates needed to be executed
march 4th? unto where?
this might just be THE worst review oat 🥀
guys i beg can we turn this into a copypasta
copied it to text for those who are interested
What kind of poetry is this? The words don't even rhyme! I guess in Vergil's day there weren't so many rhyming words in English. It takes real a poet, like Maya Angelo or Jewel, to rhyme words properly. "My hands are small, I know/ But they're not yours, they are my own." Now THAT'S poetry. But turning to the plot of this "poem," I don't understand what this Juno has against this Aeneas guy. He seems like a straight fellow, but she's always trying to drown him and stuff. And what's the big deal about Rome? It seemed so stupid that Aeneas had to go off and found this city and couldn't stay with that chick who killed herself. I've been to Rome. It's not all that great, and they don't even speak English. Aeneas is not a good role model for kids.
Do you think that when he hosted his symposium, agathon was aware of the insane yaoi he was opening the door for

ok i've talked about this before but just. i need everyone to know about this aristophanes bust.
specifically the last few letters on the first line of text, which should read ΑΡΙΣΤΟΦΑΝΗΣ, the greek spelling of his name.
for anyone who doesn't know greek, the last three letters on that first line should look like Ν Η Σ, (nu eta sigma). the nu is normal, but the eta is tiny for some reason (look at the Η in the third line for comparison) and holy fuck what is wrong with that sigma. i guess it could maybe pass as a strangely written lowercase (ς) sigma?
but either way i've decided that this is literally just the ancient greek equivalent of running out of room on a birthday card, except worse because it's literally carved into stone. and the thought of that is very enjoyable to me.
Do you think anyone ever traveled from their tiny village to Athens for the Dionysia and when they came back they wouldn’t shut up about this fun modern twist this guy named Euripides put on this classic story they’d heard their whole life and it started to get really annoying because every time anyone was talking about the traditional story they would bring up Euripides and within like two weeks all the elders wanted to kill them a little bit
Remember when Plato's Aristophanes said "Men are the Sun, women are the Earth and the androgynous are the Moon."????
Remember when he said that we were all originally 8-limbed ball people who just rolled around before Zeus cut us in half?
Remember when he said that straight people are adulterers, gay men are the most masculine and courageous type of person, and lesbians also exist and are chill I guess?
Remember when he basically coined the phrase “other half” to refer to one’s soulmate, as in the literal other half of who they were before Zeus cut them in half? And said that when we find that person we long to become one with them again, to live and die together and never be separated again?
Aristophanes said a lot of shit in Symposium, and I'll be honest, some of it is Weird Shit, but ALL of it is Good Shit.
Anyway everyone go read Plato's Symposium.
"Clouds" by Aristophanes poster/cover.
love that when megacles and peisistratos were conspiring to find a way to get peisistratos back on the athenians' good side their best idea (according to herodotus) was to find a really tall, beautiful woman and dress her up in armor and say that she was athena and she thinks peisistratos is so cool, guys. and it worked because let's be real if i saw a really tall, beautiful woman dressed in armor claiming to be athena i'd do whatever she asked of me

i spent 2 decades subconsciously teaching myself not to be autistic and all i got was autistic burnout, a late diagnosis of autism, and this lousy t-shirt
who is your favorite ancient greek playwright and why is it aristophanes
Finished reading Clouds and witnessing Aristophanes roasting the SHIT out of Socrates was funny as hell, glad I started with that one
aristophanes is my favorite, Clouds is iconic af. i will note that for aristophanes it's important which translation you get because a lot of them will water down the humor or translate jokes awkwardly.

Ancient Greeks were the real shippers. They would invent the wildest pairings possible and make it canon in their version of the myth (and who cares, if it contradics some other versions). And if there was literally no way the characters can get together in the actual story? No problem, they still can can get together it the afterlife!
Shipping characters in the afterlife is actually super convenient! First, there is literally no way to prove it is not true, since who has the records of what going on in there? Second, it doesn't matter who the characters are. It doesn't matter if they never met each other, or if they belong to the different generations and didn't even live at the same time. Who cares! They met in the afterlife and fell in love, because I said so!
Though I think it's very funny to imagine all the people who, according to different sources, are dating Achilles in the afterlife fighting each other, lol.
The people yearn for the Bacchae by Euripedes to be adapted into a film…or maybe its just me idk
Have yall seen the Iphigenia in Aulis movie from 1977 that is what I desperately need or bless me with a Bacchae Prince of Egypt type movie and my liver and pancreas is yours
