Good natured rant incoming!
I'm tired of hearing about how this ending is unrealistic and Starsky should have died. Ever since I discovered the show, my biggest pet peeve has been a good portion of the fandom griping about how unrealistic it is that he survives even if those same people are happy about the ending. Listen, I'm not trying to tell you how to consume and/or enjoy media, but this is a television show, my friends. You're telling me you watched "Satan's Witches" and were totally fine, but this is where you draw the line on suspending disbelief?
First, we never get a truly good look at Starsky’s injuries. We see the 3 holes in his back for a couple of seconds, but we have no information on trajectory, angles, potential exit wounds, etc. The writers weren't exactly medical experts. Lol! And we are never informed of the extent of his recovery. We only know he's alive and well enough to joke around with his friends while he's high as a kite on painkillers. The rest is left up to interpretation.
Second, if we're concerned about realism, Hutch should at the very least be medically retired and at worst dead several times over. The amount of concussions he'd sustained alone would have lasting, possibly lifelong side effects. That's without mentioning the mystery plague that was literally shutting down his organs, the rollover car crash into a canyon that pinned his leg to the ground for several days (that leg should be gone), the multitude of explosions he'd been standing mere feet away from, frickin botulism, and that one time in the episodes we don't speak of where both boys jump off a goddamn cliff. XD
In the grand scheme of things, I think it's perfectly acceptable that Starsky lives and spends the rest of a long and happy life with his partner, don't you?
