it honestly fits mugen extremely well— especially because it feels like the kind of nickname he’d arrive at accidentally and not in a polished romantic way, either. more like:

he notices before he means to.

the yellow ribbons.

yellow silk sleeves drying in the sun.

golden fabric catching firelight while she laughs somewhere nearby.

the way her presence changes the atmosphere of a room without trying.

and mugen, who’s spent most of his life around grime, blood, ocean storms, ugly things, slowly begins associating that color with relief. warmth. home. her.

at first, it probably slips out teasingly or nonchalantly:

“hey. sunshine. you comin’ or what?”

half-grin. lazy tone. like he doesn’t care.

but then it sticks.

and over time, the nickname gets quieter. softer around the edges.

when he’s tired:

“c’mere, sunshine.”

when he’s irritable and only she can calm him:

“tch. you always gotta shine this damn bright?”

when he wakes up and sees that pastel lemon fabric beside him in the morning light:

" . . . mornin', sunshine.”

and he’d most certainly get possessive over it. if someone else called her sunshine, he’d immediately go:

“the hell you callin’ her that for?”

and the beautiful thing is that it contrasts him perfectly. mugen is rough waters, smoke, teeth and nighttime. bubs is tepidity filtering through paper screens at dawn, not soft in a weak way—sunlight can burn, too. but alive. aurelian. impossible to overlook.
