Tell me why my best, most understandable spectroscopy textbook is precisely the one that's completely falling apart (no, it's not because I use it the most, it's because the physical copy is such poor quality 😭)
Rip can you see how chapter 5 - electronic spectroscopy, "my" spectroscopy - is the most battered one 💀 Professor Sadlej you deserved so much better
A little late for the start of the year, but since one of my goals for 2026 is to be more present on langblr/studyblr -- you should reblog this post if you're active on either and we have overlapping interests! I'm especially interested in finding blogs that share language learning resources and other aspiring or current graduate students.
For reference:
I study German, Norwegian, Latin, and Japanese primarily, with some irregular dabbling in other Germanic and the Celtic languages (especially Yiddish and Irish).
I'm also in the process of waiting to hear back from History PhD programs, and study Early Modern European histories of marginality, with an emphasis on monster studies, trans/gender/intersex studies, and disability studies.

Had the first lesson after the holiday break and honestly it kinda killed me. Between being a bit out of practice with the speaking part, and the grammar point we learnt needed knowledge of a previous point from units ago that I had kinda forgot, it was a bit of chaos. But hopefully will get back to the flow of it soon!
-> 50 mins of italki class (speaking, vocab, grammar)
I think I speak for everyone when I say that I am happy this year is done. While it hasn't been my worst year, it certainly hasn't been all that great either! I definitely could have done better at meeting my goals and achieving more things, but life definitely also got the better of me in many ways and made that more difficult than I could manage.
I don't want to dwell too long about thinking about how bad the past year has been, but instead I want to try to look forward to 2026, and trying to make it one of my best years yet, with goals that I achieve and progress made towards my life goals, even if the world around me might be on fire.
2026 Resolutions
Finish a minimum of 52 books
I think this is a good goal to reach, not so low that I make it easy on myself but not so high that I am struggling and speeding through books to try to make my goal. It's a book a week and about half of my goal last year, so it is definitely achievable.
Study Russian for one hour for at least 100 days
I decided to focus on Russian this year, since I plan on focusing on Eastern Europe for my graduate degree in international relations
Complete my cybersecurity certification
I mentioned this in my last post but I had put it off until I felt like I could focus because the course charged a monthly fee for access to the course materials, but I plan to make 2026 the year I get the certification.
Finish my first manuscript and round of edits
Improve my night and morning routines
Attend one anime convention
Be more adventurous, do new things often
Post more often here on my study blog and grow my audience here by posting better content!
I hope that all of you stick around to watch how well I can achieve these goals in 2026!
Taking care of myself over the holidays and preparing for 2026
This month was a very quiet one for me. I was working on mainly getting ready for the holidays, celebrating my 25th birthday, my friends' various birthdays and get-together events, and some last minute appointments. While I wanted to finish off the year strong, I really am just gliding into the end of it, hoping that with the new year I will have a boost of motivation as a lot of the people around me also try to stick to their resolutions as well! I will have a separate post with my 2026 resolutions that'll come out on the 1st. I hope that you all look forward to it!
FINAL REPORT
Books Read: 83/100
I think this is very good! More than last year, and I know that most of my issues with meeting the goal this year were related to decision paralysis, which I am fixing next year by not allowing myself to read too many books at the same time and by focusing my nonfiction reading on more specific subjects for longer periods of time.
Wrote 25k of the 50k words of my planned manuscript. I am going to focus more effort into it in the new year, as the cold weather will be keeping me inside.
My language study very much fell off in the beginning of the year, largely because I was trying to do too much at once. I am going to be picking one language to focus on for 2026 (and likely a few years after).
The choices are between Latin and Russian. I think for graduate school, I will be choosing to focus on Russian.
The plan is to get my cybersecurity certification early next year, again using the excuse of the cold weather to stay in and focus on these things.
The certification program charged a monthly fee for access, so I was putting it off until I knew I would be able to dedicate the time to finish it as fast as possible.
It turned out my plans to go to graduate school this year ended up being put off due to monetary issues, but with some careful planning, next year looks like it will be the year that I can apply, and 2027 will be the year that I attend. Similar issues arose with Fulbright, as there were cuts to funding and issues with people being unable to get return flights, so my family and I decided to try to look elsewhere for funding opportunities.
Finally, we were able to get many of my health issues seen to! While it was certainly not the best time, doctor's appointments are very draining and the medical tests sometimes did feel like torture, we were able to figure out what underlying issues were causing so many of my issues with keeping a routine and being healthy. Knowing what I do now, it should be easier to achieve my goals in 2026.
I got my code to work yesterday! Mostly based on how my project partner did it, but still. Now I’m making a bunch of figures before starting on working out how to iterate it though various sets of initial conditions. ft more prettiness from the glasshouse I visited at the weekend :)
