but at the end of 1.15 last night, there's a clip of samira and mel standing next to each other, and a) i choose to believe this foreshadows samiramel besties in s2 and b) it occurred to me that these are two of the loneliest characters we see in the show where their loneliness is a strong aspect of their characters. like i think we can also make the argument that someone like dennis is alone, but we dont know if he feels lonely, and its not a trait i would describe as crucial to understanding dennis.

but mel and samira are alone, and lonely. i wrote abt it last night, but mel only has becca, and never gets to turn "off" or recover from all she does and goes through. and while i'd say samira gets to turn "off", signalled by her final break down in the bathroom, and when she admits "i think today is finally getting to me" (paraphrased) after she was kinda manic and wanting to work a double, i think she's still alone. she says herself she has no dating or social life, and that all of that can wait until she's done w her residency and happy w her career.

and why i think mel and samira make interesting mirrors in this regard is because mel's story foreshadows caretaker burnout in her future. but samira, she ends the season in the park with other members of the pitt crew, literally and metaphorically letting her hair down. its interesting to think that maybe in season 1 samira and mel start in the same or similar places, but in season 2 might have totally diverged from each other.
