Been thinking about how both Mel and Oglivie have implied neurodivergence, but only one is constantly hated for it •~•??
I understand that being suspected of being on the spectrum doesn’t automatically void you of all the times you’ve been rude or judgmental! It’s just that they give him no grace at all and hates on him :/
Like Mel is very socially awkward, hyper-fixates often, and her mood can change very fast- “cute, friendly, relatable, trying her best, super silly autism :3”. And yet Ogilvie, who is also socially awkward, hyper-fixates often, and mood can change very fast, is considered “rude, arrogant, misogynistic, ignorant, hot-shot, insensitive”??
Ex: Mel is constantly obsessed with Langdon, and sure it’s a rather healthy relationship, but sometimes she’s like REALLY clingy. Going to him for almost everything and always talking about him (even constantly to her sister?) to the point where most of the fandom were convinced that he was GONNA CHEAT ON HIS WIFE, yes, LEAVE HIS CHILDREN. AND WIFE. IN THE PEAK OF HIS ADDICTION. FOR HIS COWORKER. Too many times has she been completely wrapped up in her sister’s caretaking (to the point where she’s slightly overbearing) that she gets distracted from saving lives. Also, when she doesn’t understand certain social cues or is a bit unprofessional, people either ignore it as part of her charm, or gently correct her without getting mad at all.
Ex: Ogilvie often thinks he’s better than others and can be extremely blunt. He over-estimates himself too much or bugs physicians and residents to let him do complicated procedures without full training. Also in the wrong for being so judgmental towards an un-housed woman with addiction, that one man for his obesity, or being overly blunt about Louie’s passing- “he croaked”. However, most of it was what he genuinely thought was fact, and there weren’t actually that many purposeful dark jokes. When he often misses those social cues though he gets heavily scolded- sometimes without much extended explanation to what he did wrong- and expected by the fandom to change over night.
Just because his “type” of neurodivergent is not the “silly” kind where you love the ren fair or like being really social (like Mel is), doesn’t make him a horrible, or malicious character.
I think often times, when other people think of an implied autistic character, they don’t assume it’s the guy you work with that’s too eager to win, or the girl that can’t read the room, or even that person that’s scared of everything and tires too easily. Sometimes it can be exhausting for those of us who “aren’t sure what they’re doing wrong”, or why “everyone misunderstood the joke”. Not everyone is a bubbly “nerd” that can build relationships with almost anybody, while being hated by 0 people and being able to be a caretaker without complaints.
I’m glad they corrected his behavior and taught him a few lessons, genuinely. I just think The Pitt crew and the whole fandom needs to step back and realize that Mel and Ogilvie are two sides of the same coin, and the same spectrum. <3
so…. KINGDON!
they r so fun to draw!!!!

I don't usually ship characters but Mel and Langdon?
yeah, im rooting for a divorce Langdon...sorry
Such is my staunch protectiveness over the wellbeing of our queen Mel King that I keep having to remind myself that I do actually like Elf.
(like I need to understand my reflex response when it comes up is a solidarity "ugh"/general feeling of annoyance/eyeroll on her behalf and not my personal opinion on the subject)
