I completed my annual tradition of making a shlissel challah, a challah loaf in the shape of a key traditionally made the Shabbat after Passover.
Shlissel challah is supposed to represent the key to the promised land, and bring good luck. This year I canโt help but also think of the symbolism keys hold to Palestinians forced out of their homes in the Nakba and denied the right to return.

Itโs almost Purim, so itโs time to share this 1845 article about two Jewish drag kings/crossdressers/trans men. I love these two and I want to be their best friend.
I have no idea why Purim is referred to as the โRamโs Head Festivalโ; itโs not named but Iโm 99% sure this is about Purim based on the date and the description (the masks, and the long-established tradition of crossdressing on Purim). Maybe they got it confused with Rosh Hashanah and itโs an oblique reference to a shofar?
Absolutely incredible use of the passive voice: โDuring their scuffle with the policemen, the fair daughters of Israel were relieved of their gold bracelets and several articles of rich jewellery.โ Relieved by whom? Who can say? Iโm very proud of these funky fresh boys for beating the shit out of at least one cop.
I was curious about the "Ram's Head Festival" thing and decided to see if I could find when exactly in the year this was published. I managed to find a different version of the article printed on May 12th 1859 in a magazine in Georgia which cited "last evening's" New York Post (which was called The Evening Post at the time). I tried looking up their issue for May 11th, but saw nothing related to this. Thankfully the site has a search function and I finally found the original Evening Post article was printed on March 24th, 1859. (The image is from the Georgia newspaper because it's a bit easier to read, but besides the intro sentence it has the exact same wording as the article in The Evening Post))
Two other newspapers showed up in the search that covered it too - one used the same text as above, but the other wrote this:
None of this helps explain the"Ram's Head Festival" thing, but now I was curious where the 1845 date came from. The source of the first image seems to be the Digital Transgender Archive, which lists only the year and the newspaper it was from. They say they got the image from the American Antiquarian Society, but you can't really access their archives. I didn't have any luck finding one online either, so I can only guess that either the Digital Transgender Archive or the American Antiquarian Society got the date wrong.
Thank you for this additional research! I did indeed find the article on the Digital Transgender Archive and went with the date they gave. Iโm so glad I got to read the other versions of the article, it contains so many gems- I canโt help but be tickled by โa large number of excited Israelitesโ.

interesting! they're trying to trick the AI by watching videos that have a primarily adult viewer demographic? well im a curious fella so naturally i have to take a look-see, and
im simultaneously amused at the perception of what kids think adults watch, fascinated that they're thinking to take these measures, and saddened that theyre forced to live in a stupid digital panopticon

And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasnโt it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic โalt side of Tiktokโ where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so itโs sort of comical how you think that youโve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, youโre wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of โstuff.โ
