Hey maybe you guys should stop writing for the Addams family cause you don't get them at all.
Imagine my girl Morticia saying that shit in any other portrayal? NO? Because she wouldn't.
I really love Jenna Ortega as Wednesday
And when she's given good material to work with I love Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia
but this show really does not seem to get the dynamic of the Addams Family as a whole like it just does not seem to grasp what their deal is as a family
The problem with Netflix's Wednesday is that one of the main things about the Addams Family is that they are counter cultural. Specifically counter to cishet, white, American, suburban norms.
Part of that is being the opposite of the shitty sitcom family where the wife is a nag, the husband is an idiot, the mother-in-law sucks, and no one seems to like each other very much. The Addamses actually love each other. There's no 'take my wife' bs. If Gomez calls Morticia a battle-axe or the ol' ball and chain he means it to be highly complimentary. There's none of the nonsense like in the pics OP posted. Gomez or Morticia lives with their mother in law (it depends on which version whose mother she is) who is literally a witch (geddit, 'my mother-in-law is such a witch...') and get on great. They genuinely and openly support, love, and care for each other through thick and thin.
But the biggest problem that Netflix's Wednesday has is that to make a really good Addams show rn would mean scrapping the Sabrina the Darksided Witch/boarding school Monster High concept, going back to basics, and having them live next to an upper-middle class, conservative values, MAGA family and letting their differences fuel the plot.
A really good Addams Family show would have Morticia fighting against book bans at the school and having hilarious misunderstandings about what her neighbour means about "Liberal witch hunts." It would celebrate queerness, and gender (and species) non-conformity because the Addamses are queer and gender non-conforming, and not always definitely human (Cousin Itt, for example). You know Fester's gender identity is probably something like 'an abomination.' If one of them gets asked, "What are you?" the answer is a prompt, "An Addams."
They would be fighting for co-ed sports so Wednesday can trounce a boy at fencing, and would find out her chromosomes are just 'spooky' or something.
There'd be an episode about immigration and being targeted by ICE. OFC several Addamses come from somewhere weird and arrived in the USA via broomstick, or tunneling from some underground community of cryptids, or other hilarious misadventure. Gomez would desperately want to be blackbagged and treated like a dangerous animal (cue a major flirting moment between him and Morticia). They would permanently scare ICE out of the town.
Wednesday would fiercely support Landback. Pugsley would get redpilled and learn a lesson real quick. Gomez would get into (and out of) Crypto, and Morticia would have run-ins with MLM 'huns.' They would advocate for freedom of religion. Granny would rally alongside Evangelicals to have religion in school, only to reveal she meant witchcraft. They would support UBI, and be anti-landlord. Easy episode idea: Gomez is a landlord and goes on a spiral about it ("But, Gomez, you love leeches and scum" "Not this kind! Morticia, they've painted everything white, in my name!!!" "No!") and they wind up in a battle with the town because he wants to unburden himself of this shame and the town wants to stop free community-owned housing.
The point is that Netflix isn't going to touch any of that with a ten foot pole. They don't want to; that's way too political for them. Instead, they made this wildly unrelated supernatural teen drama that has nothing to do with the original concept or world that the Addams Family exists in (they're outsiders in the real world, that's the point).
And, worse, Netflix's Wednesday actively goes against the original themes by being vaguely conservative in its values.
Netflix's Wednesday fails the assignment so bad I'd laugh, if it wasn't so disappointing and enraging. Just take a look at what the Mary Sue had to say about the whole "werewolf conversion camp" debacle for a microcosm of the many things wrong with this show.
"It wants to use hot-button topics like conversion therapy and colonization but it doesn’t understand how to work them into the metaphor. In fact, it barely knows how to work with the basic metaphor of “monsters” and how they function in the horror genre in general. In storytelling, the monster or the freak has always been the stand-in for the societal outcast. For the person who can’t be controlled by the dictates of polite society. They are the subtext for the outcast. But Wednesday makes the subtext text by literally splitting the characters into “outcasts” and “normies.” And yet the outcasts, the monsters and freaks who live on the fringe, are also the privileged and elite."
In my opinion, Netflix's Wednesday is wholly unworthy of the Addams name and is an outright blight on the franchise.
…I want a world where this is the version of the show we got. Because that all sounds awesome and like it would make all the right people mad.

Hide the Object
Humans are very sneaky when it comes to hiding objects, even using their own body to do so. Can you imagine how horrified aliens would be if humans hid objects inside their bodies?
. . .
The leader of the archaeological team looked around at his team. They were hiding from the pirates, but they would soon be discovered. “If the pirates find these stones a vital piece of this planet’s history will be lost.”
“Back up is coming, right?” The lone human asked.
The leader nodded. “Yes, but they will not arrive in time.”
“Don’t worry, I got this!” The human said. He grabbed the small pebble like things and put them in his mouth.
The crew did not have long to freak out as the pirates arrived and there was a fight.
After the rescue team arrived and the pirates were dealt with the human spat the stones into his hand. Everyone recoiled in disgust.
“How!” the leader demanded.
“I just kept them in my cheeks,” the human replied.
“How! You spoke normally and even fought!”
“Dude, I have kids. I have to be good at hiding things in my cheeks if I want to snack in piece.”
. . .
Specialty Retrieval was interesting with a human. They seemed to have no appreciation for danger. And they were crazy.
The pair had successfully found the chip they were assigned to retrieve and taken it without being located. However, they had a problem. It would soon be discovered that the chip was missing.
“They will do a strip search,” the alien partner said. “We will need to hide the chip and come back for it later.”
“I have a better idea,” the human said. She pulled out a little rubber baggie, put the chip in it and sealed it closed. She took a big drink of water, put the baggie in her mouth, and swallowed it.
“What have you done!” the partner demanded. Had the human lost her mind!
“Relax,” the human said. “The rubber will protect the chip from my stomach acid-”
The alien paled at those words.
“-and the chip is like the size of my thumb nail, so it’ll pass through my digestive track just fine. We’ll get it back by tomorrow.” She smiled brightly.
The alien wanted to bag his head on the wall.
(They survived the strip search, made it off the planet, and did get the chip back the next day)
. . .
The five teammates stared at the little statue. It was small, fitting in a human’s palm, but it was big enough that it wouldn’t be easy to hide. How were they going to get it out? They would surely be searched when it was discovered missing, and they wouldn’t be able to leave the planet for another planetary cycle and a half!
The two humans looked at each other. Both seemed apprehensive, which put the rest of the team on edge. If something scared a human, it had to be bad.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Human Steve asked Human James.
Human James nodded grimly. “Rock, Paper, Scissors?”
The aliens stared at the humans has they held out their fists, counted to three, and then made shapes. Human Steve looked at his hand and then swore.
“Sorry bud,” Human James said.
“Give me the statue, and then everyone turned around,” Human Steve said, looking very unhappy.
Confused, but trusting their teammate the three aliens did to. Human James also turned around. They waited in tense silence.
“Okay, we’re good,” Human Steve said.
The four turned around. The statue was gone.
“Where… is the statue?” the team leader asked.
Human Steve grimaced. “You don’t want to know.”
(After they were back at base Human Steve insisted on washing the statue very well and many times before he gave it back)

Police supporters regularly admit that the police are the bad guys. They just don't care.
It has just occurred to me that of all the characters in Winnie the Pooh, the only ones that lack both fingerless stuffing hands and faint seam lines (the indications that someone is a stuffed animal) are Rabbit and Owl. Which carries the possible implication that Rabbit and Owl are just a normal rabbit and owl living with a bunch of sentient stuffed animals.
And somehow this makes Rabbit’s constant consternation with all of his neighbors even funnier to me.
Theyre also the only ones with bushy eyebrows and chest and chin floof, and I dont know if thats relevant but it FEELS relevant! Also someone mentioned Gopher too and OF COURSE, there is absolutely no argument that this whistling little man isn’t just an average (talking) gopher.
The more I examine this the more it feels just so OBVIOUS
You are exactly right! Most of the characters in the stories are based on the real Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed toys except for Rabbit and Owl who were added for the books and Gopher who is exclusive to the Disney adaptations.
Here are the real Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga, and Eeyore. They currently live at the New York Public Library.
It’s fairly clear in the book illustrations too:
‘Owl,’ said Rabbit shortly, ‘you and I have brains. The others have fluff. If there is any thinking to be done in this Forest – and when I say thinking I mean thinking – you and I must do it.’

This post has been getting a surge of attention and let me tell you that 1) I am really pleased at how kind most of the people who KNEW all this have been in explaining it, and 2) I feel a lot better seeing just how many other people didn’t have any more clue of this than I did XD It’s kinda nice being part of a post thats spreading some fun knowledge in a nice way!
Also thank you to the gracious @roofermadness in the tags for complimenting my astuteness on figuring this out from the animation character designs, you are so nice to say so and I appreciate you 🥰
Rabbit and Owl are also the only animals you might realistically expect to find in Ashdown Forest, where the Hundred Acre Wood is!

“It’s not that wet”
(via)
This cat strikes me as both fascinated by the sensation of the rain - the smell, sound, and feel of it - and completely mortified by the fact that it comes with being wet
This cat is like “I am enjoying approximately 75% of this experience but I’m not sure if it’s worth that other 25%”
sex workers fought in the street for you to be able to celebrate pride. sex workers rights should be an essential part of the pride celebration. I'm dead the fuck serious.
I love that so many people have mentioned Marsha P. Johnson in the tags, or made comments about black trans sex workers bc I know that includes Sylvia Rivera, but this post isn't just about them. This post is also about the kids who worked the streets of Greenwich Village who fought until the wee hours of morning on the first night of the stonewall uprising, even though THEY WEREN'T THE ONES THAT THE POLICE WERE TARGETTING THAT NIGHT. this is about those of us who have been fighting new censorship laws tooth and nail, the same laws that are now being used against trans and queer kids across the country and around the world. This is about the sex workers who tirelessly educated the public about safe sex methods during the AIDS crisis, when the government wouldn't even acknowledge that it is a sexually transmitted disease. Sex workers have fought for liberation from the very beginning and have CONTINUED to fight. we don't get to forget that our lives are considered "deviant". we are faced with that reality every single day, but many of us keep fighting for all "deviants" to be free to love, fuck, and live.
Every deviancy law that has ever been closed has been closed by a dog pile of sex workers tirelessly working to do so. Men, women, enbies, old sex workers, eighteen year olds who are homeless and angry, abled, disabled, black, white, latine, every race or ethnicity you can think of, but they all dogpile together on shitty laws and shitty authority figures and FIGHT for you. No cops at pride, keep the sex workers: cuz family friendly means you take care of the family that takes care of you, not sterilizing a protest for marketability.
"family friendly means you take care of the family that takes care of you, not sterilizing a protest for marketability."
fucking. this. thank you. 💜🌈
Can you please describe yourself for us using a haiku?

“I preferred to adopt two male cats so that they would not have kittens but they adopted a kitten from the street 😅”
these cats gay good for them
this happened to me in a roundabout way, I added three new kittens to my foster cat family and two of my boys have fallen in love with them and take care of them.
the older black and white cat, Death Grips, lets the kittens nurse on him. it’s so cute. the orange cat, Romeow, used to hate other cats but now he loves playing with Death Grips and the kittens.

Hollywood has no concept of what 5th century Romans looked like. If I'm watching a movie about the final days of the Western Roman Empire, I should be seeing zero togas. It's like if you made a movie about the Trump administration, you wouldn't have people dressed like the founding fathers. That's how wrong it is.
This is what 5th century Romans looked like:
I think the problem is that pop culture has this theme park version of history that treats time periods like distinct worlds with no fluidity between them. In Roman Times, people dressed like this vs Medieval Times when people dressed like that. But that is obviously not how time works. The end of the Western Roman Empire led directly into and overlapped with the Middle Ages, and the aesthetics we associate with medieval Europe were already long established.
On a related note, the "barbarians" didn't dress like you think they did either. Less of this:
More of this:
(Art by Angus McBride)
Again, the end of the Western Roman Empire was the beginning of medieval Europe, and it already looked like it.
The notable exception was the Franks, who apparently really did dress like that:
There really is an exception to everything, and it's usually the French.
Vikings/Norse in media ...
What they really looked like...
happy 100th birthday rudy! hope you're doing well x
