He sat up a little straighter as the trees gave way to patchy clearings, old dilapidated barns and empty looking roadside shops popping up around them, the same creepy... cone dude pasted all over, obnoxiously pointing to a tiny road leading under a bridge. "Shit-" Nicky's dad grunted, breaking all too hard before swinging a tight right turn onto the road, leaving Nicky all but convinced they were about to tumble headfirst down the steep hill. "Jay." His mom said, an audible frown in her voice as she hung on to the handle of the car, making the other grunt in frustration. "The road was hardly visible, Lu." He retorts shortly, glancing over at her with a scowl before focusing back on the road. Nicky sighed, rolling down his window and sticking his head out, looking into the overgrown roadside littered with scrap and garbage. Trees brush past his head, the leaves tickling his face as the car meanders slowly towards the town, the cracked pavement crunching under the wheels. More houses come into sight, half of them looking rundown if not abandoned entirely, small strip malls and restaurants scattered around. His mom sighs, “God, this is the town? You said it was nice.”

Maritza used to be very happy, a sporty, but very intelligent young girl, but after Lucy's death, she focused more on sports, and after Mya's disappearance, which she seemed to be the first to know she was dead, she became bitter and angry.
