TWOW Jaime I [real]
based on this scene from the mummy.
The importance of Jaime and Brienne
Usually I try not to get too caught up in shipping wars, but I just get so angry when people insist Jaime and Brienne don’t love each other.
There are so many romantic stories out there that feature a beautiful girl who learns to love an older, ugly, scarred or damaged man - but how many stories feature a beautiful man who learns to love an ugly woman?
How many of those heartwarming stories about ‘beauty being on the inside’ apply to women? How many stories tell women they’re worthy of love and romance no matter what they look like, that their beauty comes from inside them anyway? When you’ve got the gorgeous Gwendoline Christie playing her, it can be hard to remember Brienne really is ugly. It’s not that she’s just unconventionally attractive or pretty if you squint. Physically, she is ugly. She’s too tall, too big, too strong, too mannish, with missing teeth, disfiguring scars, blemishes, an ill-set face and drooping lips. People recoil when they see her. At first sight she is monstrous and she has been persecuted all her life for her appearance.
And yet, the most beautiful man in Westeros falls in love with her.
Why?
Because she is kind and strong and loyal past the point of sense. Because she is selfless and courageous and unwilling to compromise on her moral integrity. Because she is pure and innocent and naive and idealistic. Because she has endured immense pain and suffering and abuse and never once let it taint her. Because she represents everything he once wanted to be. Because she represents everything he could be. Because she sees him for who he really is. Because he would risk his life to save her. Because she would die to protect him. Because what she looks like doesn’t matter. Because in his eyes, she is beautiful.
This is the story of a handsome man who falls in love with an ugly woman. This is the story of a woman whose worth and desirability comes from her personality, not from her appearance. This is the story of a woman whose beauty is found within. George RR Martin himself said that the story of Jaime and Brienne is like Beauty and the Beast with the genders reversed.
So no, I will not accept a platonic reading of their relationship because this particular love story and all the messages it endorses are simply too important. Jaime and Brienne are in love. End of discussion.
the whole point of the Kingsguard is that they’re unbelievably fucking washed like zero heroic deeds on the board just morning noon night overtime fraud aura farming. Complicit in every act of patriarchal violence of the monarchy. Not even that good at fighting. Hypothetical victories only. Like “noooo Arthur Dayne would’ve—” except Arthur Dayne lay down his life to stop a pregnant 15 year-old dying in childbirth from seeing her big brother on her deathbed and then got fucking hosed by teenage Ned Stark and his gay best friend who does not hit 5 foot two. “Ohhhhhh aemon the dragonknight” kept his sister in that damn cage for decades and then died in the service of his brother which is dickrider behavior. Bystanderan Selmy? Washed.
Yeah honestly Jaime saving the city, but also allowing the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty in the city (theoretically he “””””could”””” have restrained the king and saved the children), dooming the Baratheon dynasty via adultery, and of course the stock and standard defence of a monarch’s marital rape - like? It’s kind of getting implied he needs to LEAVE the Kingsguard in order to actually honour his vows of knighthood. Like, the idea in the show that Brienne and Pod would join the Kingsguard makes sense… and… the post would utterly ruin them. The whole guard needs to be re-done to be just really good guards - not knights. Unless they’re okay with the Kingsguard being allowed to depose tyrants as like an insurance policy- because otherwise you CANNOT be a good person and a good knight and a good Kingsguard.
“allowing the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty in the city” “dooming the Baratheon dynasty via adultery”
One of my favorite details about jaime and briennes asos arc is brienne’s association with woman’s clothes and Jaime’s reaction to them.
The first time is in Jaime’s first chapter literally only a few paragraphs in, when he amuses himself picturing her in a silk gown. He finds it amusing.
And then after they go through all that together, after saving each other a couple of times and pushing the other forward to keep going, keep living, jaime actually gets to see brienne in a gown. His first thoughts are on how thicker her shoulders are than his, and her neck bigger, a reminder that she is stronger than him. So he keeps the amusing thoughts to himself for once, knowing he no longer is the superior one he thought he was, knowing she could beat him in a fight.
And then of course he sees her in another gown by the end. (Interesting that these moments are from the start of their journey, the middle and the end) important to say that brienne still does look ugly and awkward but this time jaime not only doesn’t have anything funny to say or even think, he gives her a compliment. Its a common compliment to say to a maid as we know from akotsk, so its not the compliment that is important here, its the fact that jaime also thinks to himself that god yes she does have astonishing eyes.
The reason i find these so important to me is because through all of these moments brienne is still an ugly maid, and grrm makes sure to remind you that before jaime says whatever he thinks; what matters here is jaime’s change of approach toward her and i find that beautiful.

“i never see you at the club” ok well i never see you on ao3 at 2am reading about the same two bitches falling in love for the 1000th time in the 500th way
I think it passing odd that I am loved by one for a kindness I never did, and reviled by so many for my finest act.
i stand by the statement that anyone who believes brienne and tormund were meant to be, has a fundamental misunderstanding of brienne's character and doesn't actually like her.

“He will bring a rose for you,” her father had promised her, but a rose was no good, a rose would not keep her safe.
based from this post.
““Jaime,” Brienne whispered…“Jaime, what are you doing?” “Dying,” he whispered back. “No…no, you must live.” He wanted to laugh. “Stop telling me what do, wench. I’ll die if it pleases me.” “Are you so craven?” The word shocked him. He was Jaime Lannister…No man had ever called him craven. Other things they called him, yes; oathbreaker, liar, murderer. They said he was cruel, treacherous, reckless. But never craven. “What else can I do, but die?” “Live,” she said, “live, and fight, and take revenge.””
—
The actual lines from A Storm if Swords. I don’t know how D&D read this and got “let’s change this to ‘you sound like a bloody woman.’”
-M (still not over it forever)
can’t wait for jaime and brienne to mutually respect each other all night long
Jaime’s golden hand cracked him across the mouth so hard the other knight went stumbling down the steps. His lantern fell and smashed, and the oil spread out, burning. “You are speaking of a highborn lady, ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne.”
i’ll always be so moved and inspired by brienne of tarth, always. brienne, who knows she’ll never be seen as beautiful, who fits no one’s idea of a lady or of a knight, who will never be respected as either. who has been belittled and outcast her entire life and seldom shown the gentleness she deserves. she has every reason to become as embittered as jaime or sandor and resent the world for what it has done to her, and yet she doesn’t. she continues to believe in goodness and continues to have hope. she stays honorable and gentle and holds onto her tender heart no matter how many times it is hurt. brienne is the epitome of the resilience of the human spirit, a reminder that true strength is knowing that love and beauty and kindness exists no matter how much you have suffered, and that you can bring that light into the world yourself every single moment. she’s so strong and i’ll always love her for it

trashing brienne of tarth? talk shit get hit wITH A SOLID GOLD PROSTHETIC HAND IN THE FACE
it's so... idk. sad? infuriating? that jaime's golden hand is 100% decorative
he mentions earlier that a hook would've served him better and like. this thing is ornate, heavy, and totally non-functional. i'm sure lugging around something so heavy on his stump hurts like hell. but it's also completely useless. it can barely hold the weight of a wine glass, and no wonder if it's strapped to his wrist.
he could have been given a functional prosthetic that allowed him to grab and hold things and was secured at his shoulder/chest
but a lannister needs to be SEEN to be whole!! a lannister needs to be decorated and elevated and refined!! an actually functional prosthetic would've given him away as a cripple!! we can't have that
so instead we've tied a paper weight to his stump. it hurts and does nothing. the fingernails are mother of pearl.
