I’m not one for emotions. I’m not one for sharing my feelings. But this is me. This is real. And this is why TS7 means so much to so many of us.
Speak now was with me as I graduated college and moved to NYC alone. It was with me as I started a new life in a new city as a bright-eyed 21-year old. I was naïve, ambitious, and wouldn’t trade those first years out of college for anything. Never Grow Up literally touched my soul lyrically.
RED was with me through my most formative years as an adult. After a long drive alone listening to RED, I came out to my family, and once again started a new life as the person I always knew I was meant to be. I experienced my first true relationship during the RED era, which continues today, nearly six years later.
1989 helped me come into myself as a young adult. These were my in-between years. Your mid-twenties bring confusion. Should I be married, have kids, be an executive, join a start-up, follow my dreams? I learned during this era that life is confusing and stressful, and you have to do what makes sense to you.
reputation came into my life when I was realizing that I had some personal demons to fight. Anxiety and depression were taking over, and I was feeling lost with trying to conform to societal norms as a gay male in the Midwest. Delicate hit me hard, in a good way, because it felt so relatable, and still does. I learned that we all have hurdles in life, and that’s what makes it beautiful, but also terrifying. But it’s how we handle those hurdles that define us, and we always come out better on the other side.
On the eve of TS7, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. I don’t know what the next era will bring, or even sound like, but I do know that it will be the playlist of my foreseeable future. And I can proudly say that this era, as a 31 year-old gay male, I have never felt more confident in myself, and can attribute much of that confidence to having Taylor’s music by my side through some of my biggest life moments.
