In a lot of fics, when Phantom is weakened and he passes out, he turns back into Danny. This usually ends up being an identity reveal.
What if it was the other way around. Phantom is hurt and weakened. In an unconscious state why revert back to his living half that has to work to function. Breath now. Blood flowing now. Organs working now.
Staying in the mostly dead state could make sense too. Danny's now stuck as Phantom until his core recovered enough for him to put the energy into turning back into 'living' Danny. The first time his happens probably freaks him out thinking he's all the way dead.
His healing also seems to be faster as Phantom so he spends a little time stuck that way and then can change back to normal.

Nico knew Octavian was a legacy - a descendant of Apollo many generations removed. And it also screams eugenics to me. As it's implying octavian is worse because he's got gaunt skin and bloodshot eyes and all these ailments. Rick Riordan tried to make Luke (a man who used similar logic as this when he pretty much said we need to let everyone fend for themselves under the titans) a tragic villian, but Octavian is the pure evil one? Really? The pure evil one is the one who's described as anemic, gaunt, barbarous, a loser? That one? Because I don't know… In laying it on so thick, you make yourself come off as a bully. And I will never support bullies. Even when it's an author pretty much bullying his main villian.
