POSTING THIS AGAIN!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!
Fourth in a series I of comics about protesting safety tips I made with @this.is.ysabel . This one is about the dangers of police surveillance and how to avoid it if possible. Keep being safe when you go out. Donât get snatched!
Police may also feign kettles in order to cause a protest to disperse.
Protests that move quickly are harder to kettle (but are easier to split up as people get left behind). Something important to note is that kettles are used by police to gather intelligence. Police may tell you that you will be allowed to leave if you provide your name and your address, if you give information about other protestors etc. Police can and will lie to you, do not trust them. Never talk to cops. Being trapped in a kettle is stressful. Police may decide to arrest a few of you or all of you. Their goal is to gather information and to demoralize you. They might threaten or harass you. Your goal should be to remain calm and to help the people around you remain calm. Remember if nobody talks, everyone walks.

Donziger won Indigenous clients a $9.5 billion settlement from Chevron for poisoning the Amazon. Now he's gone to jail after a US judge appointed a Chevron-linked private law firm to serve as prosecutor in a contempt of court case. (Federal prosecutors refused to try the case)
One judge in the first case did not disclose he held investments in Chevron and was openly hostile to the plaintiffs. He appointed the second judge, who not only hired a law firm that works with Big Oil to prosecute Donziger, but hid the trial from the public
Via petition for Donziger's release:
Steven Donziger is a US lawyer, Harvard Law alumnus, and environmental rights defender who represented victims of oil dumping in an emblematic case against Chevron Corporation in Ecuador, following accusations that the corporation was responsible for what is widely considered one of the worst oil-related environmental disasters in recent history.
He has been under pre-trial house arrest since August 2019 after he refused to comply with a court order to hand over his electronic devices, arguing that such a disclosure could compromise the confidentiality of the communications with his clients and put them at risk. The detention follows a long-running smear campaign of intimidation and harassment against Steven Donziger and other human rights defenders by Chevron.Â
In September 2021, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that Steven Donzigerâs deprivation of liberty is arbitrary because it lacks any legal basis and is in violation of several norms relating to the right to a fair trial, including the apparent lack of impartiality of the courts. Moreover, the Working Group concluded that his detention appears to be in retaliation for his work as a legal representative of Indigenous communities in Ecuador.Â
Despite serious concerns over the lack of independence, objectivity and impartiality of the judge who ordered the pre-trial house arrest and who has overseen the trial over criminal contempt charges, Steven Donziger was sentenced on 1 October to the maximum penalty of 6 months in prison and denied the possibility to be released pending an appeal.Â
We urge the Department of Justice to assume jurisdiction over the case instead of the private prosecutor, and promptly implement the UN Working Groupâs decision by ensuring that Steven Donziger is released immediately and unconditionally. We also call on Attorney General Garland to launch a full and independent investigation of the circumstances surrounding Steven Donzigerâs arbitrary deprivation of liberty and take the necessary measures to ensure that corporations do not abuse the justice system to target and harass human rights defenders.
More information can be found in Amnesty International's urgent action bulletin here: https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/AMR51/4915/2021/en/
We join Amnesty International, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), Rep. Jim McGovern, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and 29 Nobel Laureates in calling on the DOJ to intervene.

found a post about this to reblog bc i heard some news about this issue. just in case any of you guys need further reason to despise Chevron. Steven Donzinger was able to get home for the holidays due to pressure from some congress members, but that this happened at all is a disgrace and sets a horrible precedent. thereâs more information on Donzingerâs twitter, which is @ SDonzinger

The funniest thing about talking to other professional writers is when they learn about my freakishly high daily word count. They inevitably ask "How do you manage to put out 1500 words a day?" And I get to say "I spent roughly six years practicing an 175 year old form of self-hypnosis that was originally invented for seances."
It's called Automatic Writing. People say that they can write without consciously thinking about it and I don't think that's true, but I can 100% say that it's possible to induce trance states that let your subconscious flow better.
People who've played Jackbox games with me can vouch for me. My words-per-minute rate is significantly higher than most people's.
@esotericecology weighs in:
could you perhaps drop a lil tutorial on how to achieve this trance state?
1) Sit down at your computer or desk with a blank document ready
2) Set a timer for 5 minutes
3) Start writing, and do not stop, no matter what. No eraser. No backspace. No thought. The key is to overcome any hesitation. Do not look at the screen or page if possible.
4) The next day, increase the timer by another 5 minutes.
Just keep doing that until you can enter a trance state. Then practice maintaining the trance. I can keep it going for five to six hours.
[it helps to have some sort of gesture or trigger that you use to mark the start of writing. I put my hands together in a specific way and take a deep breath. I reverse the gesture when I'm finished. ]
Additionally, if you have a history of dissociation like I do, keep something on hand to ground yourself if you start to feel yourself slipping. A warm drink, something spicy to eat, a glass of ice cold water. I'm fond of simply biting into lemon slices.
Additionally, this took a while to be truly useful. It was a fun exercise for me for the first year or so.
How do you tell the difference between trance and dissociation?
Psychographic Trance feels kinda like a calmer hyperfocus or a soft flow state. Dissociation feels numb.

Reblogging again because I just realized that if I had this advice in high school I wouldâve never made a tumblr account.
Also works for most of those news sites like WSJ or NYT that only let you read a little bit, or block adblockers. Also some disable the scroll bar but if you go to the right side of the console after hitting F12 and look for the CSS element âoverflowâ and change it from âhiddenâ to âvisibleâ then you can continue scrolling for free. Might have to click around on different parts of the page to find it, but it should work.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capitalâŚ
Listen, this is serious.
Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itâs literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weâre talking about books, if youâve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donât go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyâre completely free.
