Happy Purpeee day!
went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning
Hell yeah
He’s in the right for that this is so cool

you’re not hopeless you’re just really really tired and in desperate need of a break and im shaking you by the shoulders and telling you that all is not hopeless but you do need to rest
you’re not an inherently bad person you’re just exhausted and you’re thinking about all of your mistakes but forgetting the good you do. fatigue is lying to you, just take a nap if you can for the love of god before you start apologizing just for existing

isn't it insane though how schizophrenic people are viewed as violent and dangerous by the majority of society when in reality schizophrenic people are nearly 14 times more likely to be on the receiving end of violence than to be the perpetrators...
schizophrenic person: makes a post trying to raise awareness about the disproportionate abuse and harmful stereotypes schizophrenic people face
yall: "yeah im not gonna reblog this they used the word ins*ne which is so problematic ://"
What the fuck happens that changes these stats to such a massive degree?
1) schizophrenia hardly ever causes people to be violent so schizophrenic people aren’t more likely to be violent than anyone else
2) schizophrenic people’s autonomy is often taken away from them because of their schizophrenia. because the authorities and mental healthcare providers often automatically assume schizophrenic people to be violent, they’re more likely to immediately react to schizophrenic people's symptoms with violence, without even knowing for sure said schizophrenic person was going to be violent. all of this causes schizophrenic people to be more likely of being victims of violence and abuse. schizophrenic people also have a harder time getting out of abusive households because of the risk of their autonomy being taken away. if a schizophrenic person’s relative or partner is abusive, often the schizophrenic person has no way out of the situation, both because our disconnect from reality can result in us being easier to manipulate, and because the system is built in a way that it takes away our autonomy because of our condition.
also schizophrenic people and psychotic people in general, please do a lot of research before picking a provider for your own sake, and if they try to treat your psychosis in a way that you think is harmful then don’t hesitate to switch providers. your safety and wellbeing should be a priority over everything else.
can y'all please reblog this version instead
you have to forgive the printer because it's one of the most machine-ass machines we interact with on a day to day basis. that thing says kerchunk. hardly anything says kerchunk these days. you can't get mad at her when she kerchunks up a little.
Crazy that tech has gotten so bad that we're doing printer forgiveness now
Does this count as finding a walrus at your door?
Absolutely, and definitely less surprising than a fairy
I will concede, in this specific circumstance, it makes more sense
People die on the job every summer. Remember that water and shade breaks are crucial when working in the heat, and calling emergency services for signs of serious heat illness (fatigue, nausea/vomiting, headaches, dizziness, clammy skin, confusion, agitation, slurred speech, high body temperature, rapid heart rate, etc.) is entirely appropriate. If you’re afraid to call 911 for reasons such as being undocumented, you’ll need to get very familiar with how to prevent, recognize, and treat heat illness. If you are symptomatic and not allowed a break, water, or medical treatment, walk out. No matter how broke you are, your job is not worth your life.
Official please put yourself first sign
i get why people don't believe in marriage as a social construct but legally it is the best and easiest way to say "this is who i trust to take care of me when i can't take care of myself" and i'm so glad gay people fought for that right bc when shit gets scary at least i know im in good hands

-- Ted Chiang, from "Why A.I. Isn't Going to Make Art"
I'm so glad they got Ted Chiang -- a wonderful writer of science fiction and thinker about technology, in my opinion -- to write this essay. My favorite line was this:
Generative A.I. appeals to people who think they can express themselves in a medium without actually working in that medium.
When you realize that some people just want to be angry, they don't want to fix the problem, you'll understand.
There was a person I worked with that no matter what you did, whether it be accidentally stepping on her foot or making a joke that failed to land, she'd hold it against you.
Even if you only did it once, and you apologized, and did better, she would still make the remark about what you did.
And one day, I got tired of it and I called her out on it. And asked her what I did wrong that made her so hateful of me. And it almost kind of made her reset a little. She didn't say anything but instead walked away. She never apologized, but she never brought up what I did again. It didn't stop her from doing it to other people either, but she left me alone.
It took me a long time to figure out why that happened, because it always bothered me, coming from a household where I would get blamed for things I didn't do or falling short of being what I was supposed to. And I was told sometimes, people are hurt so much, that when they're confronted with fixing the problem, they realize they have nothing left. They spent their whole lives being angry, that if that gets solved, they don't know who they are as a person.
And I think about that sometimes when people instantly jump to the negative and do nothing but criticize people.
Are ya a proshipper
nice to know that in this day and age where new and increasingly unfathomable horrors are announced on the news daily, there are still people arguing online about fictional characters kissing
S. snuffleupagus, a newly described species of fish, is named after the beloved Sesame Street character, Mr. Snuffleupagus, to which it bear
SNUFFLEUPAGUS REAL
Fantastic article!! The guys looking for it were fish researchers who saw it one time, knew instantly it was an undescribed species, and then tried for nearly 20 years to find and document it!
It's a type of ghost pipefish, related to seahorses, and it floats around coral reefs looking like a piece of algae and hunting unsuspecting prey
They are, of course, named after Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street!
Later on it the project, they got citizen science involved, and people across the Pacific started reporting sightings of snuffy fish from all over!
Hooray for science and hooray for S. snuffleupagus !

I’m reading this book that talks about how children in a healthy home environment develop a healthy sense of shame (that is, a conscience and feeling that certain behaviors are wrong) while many children who are raised with a lot of parental anger or negative comments develop “toxic shame” where they believe there’s something wrong with THEM.
Got me thinking about how EVERY time physical discipline of a child (spanking, whipping, beating) comes up somebody jumps in and says “well I was just a horrible child, I needed to be whipped, I was bad, I had to be punished.”
As someone who works with kids and rarely finds a genuine naughty kid who can’t be reasoned with, I was always wondering what made those people so convinced they were horrible, and here’s the answer: those people developed a sense that they were naughty and bad to the core not because of their behaviors (which they should have learned are changeable) but because of the way their parents taught them to view themselves.
