Because, despite everything, what the story of Z-A really is when you think about it is a closure, a conclusion, to a "legend" that persisted over multiple millennia, closing the book on that legend. It's the end of the story of AZ, the man who lived for well over 3,000 years.

Even though Z-A takes place in the present, the main story is triggered by the baggage of the past, right down to something that was created 2,000 years ago by AZ himself, aka Ange, suddenly awakening, causing unusual developments in Lumiose City and posing a threat to the world of today, caused by someone tampering with a machine that was also created in the distant past, the Ultimate Weapon, five years prior to the events of Z-A itself (aka in X and Y), for his own ambitions at the time.

AZ is someone who has been through a lot and has seen much of the distant past, and has memories of it, including the Darkest Day in Galar, which he alludes to, and the years between XY and Z-A right up to the end of Z-A were the final years of his life. He definitely knew he was dying, but in what happened because of it he managed to form a few connections with other people who he was fortunate to call his friends, and got to witness them become great Trainers and wielders of Mega Evolution, not just in raw strength, but in strength of heart, both in connecting with Pokemon and working towards a better future where people and Pokemon can live in harmony. They saved the city from his own creation, which went haywire, and achieved heights AZ hadn't seen before. He was able to witness it in his last moments before his life finally achieved its natural end, and went out satisfied.
