He always thought he could keep things from her, if he so chose. Eventually, he would be proven right. Up until then, however, she’d thought it impossible, and he had indulged her.
And wasn’t that just the crux of it.
She knew what she was getting into from the beginning. He was smarter than her, and that had never hurt her pride. Because she always knew more than him. Somewhere, in the midst of seven hundred years, that had very neatly been ironed out, and she hadn’t noticed.
She had never been bothered that he was smarter than her, because it was just another rule of the world. It would be like being bothered by gravity following its rules. Up was up, down was down, and Rudy Connors was the smartest man probably on the planet.
The worst part was, she was fairly certain he’d never grown an ego. He just knew exactly what he could do. And he did it.
